I tried Eve for a while, and I think the last paragraph sums it up. The game promises to do what no other game has ever even attempted. And because of that, people put up with a very broken, laggy game that is a huge time sink to do anything. It's this or nothing, after all.

I've played Eve for years and one thing that is apparent is that the desire to control the resources in Eve will drive people to put up with many things, which results in the players pushing the hardware that runs the Eve galaxy to it's limits.

It started out with smaller 50 v 50 battles being laggy and slow, then CCP updated and added new hardware to resolve the lag.
With 50 v 50 now running well, corps and alliances could then bring more people to the battles since the performance was well within what they were used to.... so this then resulted in 100 v 100 battles, CCP added more hardware, then more people came to the battles, more hard gets added, more people come to the battles.... and so on.
I don't think it matters how much hardware, or how optimised the software is, more and more people will come to the battles while they view the performance as 'acceptable'

Mr Moon, its not that its broken, at least not for someone starting out, its more that its very very complex, and as such as a very steep learning curve.

/engages shameless promotion mode
For anyone new thinking of starting, they may want to find Eve University in-game - we teach the new players the ropes, and get them up to speed pretty quickly.

also worth pointing out that the large PvP fleet battles are only a small part of the game. You can play quite happily for a very long time without ever getting involved in those, and without any major lag.
