EVE-maker reveals console MMO/FPS

Dust 514 interacts with PC game.

CCP has ended speculation and unveiled Dust 514, an MMO/FPS hybrid for consoles that will interact "directly" with flagship PC title EVE Online.

Battles within Dust 514 take place on the ground, on the surface of planets that exist within the world of EVE Online. But no further details on the interplay between the two games is given.

There's no preliminary release date nor specific mention of platforms, either.

CCP does say that Dust 514 has been in production for three years at CCP Shanghai, however, and there are two CGI-like screenshots to take in.

Combat within Dust 514 will be "equal parts battlefield reflexes and strategic planning", with weapons and vehicles that are configurable in real-time. There are infantry and commander roles mentioned, although their exact duties are unclear.

CCP says to expect more at its annual fan event this October.

    Wow, impressive!

Console players joining PC players in Eve Online is just about the last news I expected to hear today...

Nice idea... I have always been a defender of MMO games with a much broader scope. Blizzard, for example, could easily have made some console version of WoW that interacts with the full WoW (maybe just a few exclusive dungeons on console) using your same character and account.

I guess this is probably the start of more like this (LOTRO guys are probably going to do something similar).
  • agparrot #3 3 years ago

Very interesting... I wonder if it will be based in the Faction War ethos, and whether there will literally be an interaction between characters in 514 and Eve - Could do with something to splurge all that Isk on, after all!
  • Charlie789 #4 3 years ago

Just started playing Eve last week so if this out in about a year then it'd be perfect timing! (for me at least) - Hopefully this will be the game that Huxley promised (after playing in the Beta I wasn't too impressed)
  • geeza2020 #5 3 years ago

Interesting. I wonder how the two games will interact? The screenshots look nice too....

    What Eve universe doesn't have:
    - aliens

    What Dust 514 needs:
    - Aliens
    - Predators
    - Scantly clad humans

    Sounds like a brilliant idea!

    /officially excited

Sounds incredibly interesting, I've always had a soft spot for Sci-Fi games like Colony Wars and G-Police. I hope this project is similar to them, could you imagine fleets of real players slugging it out? Sublime. :D

Where's the bloody virtual space stations for EvE Online? Don't tell me they're off playing with consoles instead of giving Eve Online players what we've been wanting for ages...or is this actually going to be much much better? Do we now get to walk on planets?
    I like walking.
  • Olemak #12 3 years ago

Hm. More interested in the WOrld of Darkness game, personally. I guess this Dust game sort of leads up to the Vampire game.
  • Ginger #13 3 years ago

WTF? Where did this come from?

Still, could be fun - get blobbed out and just jump on the Xbox instead :)
  • gmmonkey #14 3 years ago

CCP wins again. I'm always impressed with their ideas even though I know longer play eve anymore. It's too much of a time sink for me now.
  • pinochet_cz #15 3 years ago

well, not bad idea at all, but I don't understand why they just don't convert eve which have one of most simplistic control schema I ever saw and around 90% people I had played with had headsets.
  • AphoticCosmos #16 3 years ago

CCP again proves that it's pretty visionary.
  • Byblos1 #17 3 years ago

Sounds like PlanetSide. Which is good!

    Very interested:

    1) MMO/FPS
    2) In the most interesting MMO universe, in terms of player interaction and freedom
    3) If it has a similar epic aesthetic to EVE
    4) WANT

There seems to be a lot of love for EVE. Can anyone explain to a non-PC playing console owner what's so wonderfully marvelous and extraordinarily amazing about EVE!

I thought it was a FPS style non-game where everyone just walks about, talks, designs their own virtual furniture or clothes and some people are actually making real money out of selling this stuff to mugs!
  • bigbadbeasty #20 3 years ago

    @JensonJet

Are you thinking of Second Life, and not Eve at all.

It's a FPS/RTS. So, similar idea as Battlezone? And that video makes it look almost like Halo :)
Wonder what vehicles you'll be able to control.
  • skillian #24 3 years ago

    @JensonJet

I don't actually play, but despite that it's stories like this that make me realise that Eve might be the most important and ambitious video game ever made.
  • TSYNDMonkfish #25 3 years ago

a CCPMMOFPS - sounds to good to be true

Oh no - I thought id finaly got myself off it, but for the first time in about a year ive started having the urges to play EvE again... A filthy habbit i only managed to quit after 4 years of playing. Must.. stay.. strong..
  • gmmonkey #26 3 years ago

Gfx look amazing in the video
  • Lemming81 #27 3 years ago

Umm..Eurogamer, aren't those shots from the proposed space station walking-around type things Eve was supposed to be getting, rather than this?
  • twoism #28 3 years ago

Looks really nice from that video. CCP are great MMO developers, and I'm glad they're expanding the Eve universe in this way.
  • cullnean #29 3 years ago

    @lemming

    nope there from dust 514
  • curtlikesmeat #30 3 years ago

"Where's the bloody virtual space stations for EvE Online? Don't tell me they're off playing with consoles instead of giving Eve Online players what we've been wanting for ages"

But surely the article states that CCP Shanghai is developing Dust 514, not the main Icelandic branch. Also I seem to remember that Walking in Stations was in a VERY early state when it was last shown off and that they don't have a set timescale for it's introduction. Don't worry we'll get there eventually.

Back on topic. Looks like a very interesting proposition. Two very different games interacting and influencing each other. Sounds like a very CCP thing to do. Will keep an eye on this one.

As an aside I'd check out Rock Paper Shotgun's article. Looks like CCP's console focus for this project has made a few PC snobs quite miffed. Still, I'm looking forward to playing both sides to this increasingly fascinating universe.

  • Ryuken #33 3 years ago

What a missed chance to appeal to action lovin' players on PC as well then.
  • RedSparrows #34 3 years ago

That video makes me want this very, very much. I love the idea of forming an alliance with PC-based fleets/corps and contracting out my services for their big wars, with a band of grimy no good cons who are from the wrong side of Delta 9!

    I should kill myself now.
  • DodgyPast #35 3 years ago

Really hope there will be a PC version as otherwise a console purchase will be mandatory.

Very intrigued how they'll integrate it into the main game, definitely plenty of ways to do this.
  • RedSparrows #36 3 years ago

Had a quick browse of EVE player reactions on the forum. Some of the reactions are moronic, others far more understandable or positive.

It never ceases to amaze me how the conceit of 'PC = brains' is somehow never punctured by the innate idiocy of some of their arguments/prejudices. Hell, some of the posts work by the same damn logic as the dreaded IGN forums where 'console players' run amok like idiots loose in a sweet shop. Apparently being clever means 'I hate console gamers cos they're all stupid' or 'this will ruin EVE because FPS needs a mouse' (ffs, use your brain and understand the game will be designed in such a way....ARG). If that's clever, then I must be bloody dumb.

HI EVE PLAYERS - I'M PRIMARILY A CONSOLE GAMER, BUT APPARENTLY I CAN REASON MORE THAN SOME OF YOU AND WOULD LOVE TO PLAY DUST 514 IN CONCERT WITH AN EVE CORP.

I'd be happy if they'd just fix the sound in Eve. That little problem has been going on for months without a solution.
  • JensonJet #38 3 years ago

    bigbadbeasty,

Yeah, I probably was. Really don't understand what the attraction of Second Life is... anyway, regardless...

So can anyone tell me what Eve is? Or what it's similar to? I've heard it's name, but it's a PC game so I've never bothered to take any notice. Can anyone give me a quick, brief summary? Bueller? Bueller?
  • Repsode #39 3 years ago

    @JensonJet:

I'd check out the many articles on the game at this very website. They give a very good overview as to why it's such a facsinating game. You may even become a player yourself, or at least among the many who love to read about it rather than play it. (guilty)
  • Dizz #40 3 years ago

I cannot handle the amount of epic win by CCP's announcement. If they pull it off, we have our first proper next-gen MMORPG combining multiple gaming genres, and multiple platforms.

For PvE, we have WoW, for PvP we have Eve. Simply no competition possible lol.
