EVE heads to Steam

Longer trial to coax you into space.

EVE Online will be the first MMOG available from Steam.

The space game will come bundled with a free 21-day trial and a whole USD 5 off of your first monthly subscription.

But EVE Online was free to download already, you say. Yes, but you only got a two week trial and no money off your subsequent subscription. Besides, Steam is a good way to get the word out.

EVE Online was recently given visual overhaul to make use of fancy new graphics cards and sparkly DirectX 10 effects, something not around when it originally launched in 2003.

Currently the online space world boasts 13 million accounts around the world, all playing on one gigantic server - not split into bite-sized chunks like World of Warcraft.

Its continued success was celebrated recently as developer CCP hit its 10 year milestone. Pat was there and wrote some rousing words about it. See for yourself.

"Currently the online space world boasts 13 million accounts around the world, all playing on one gigantic server "

Somehow I think this is not true. It could be Eurogamer's own interview with CCP from June 2007:

"Exactly, there are 172,250 subscribers and 31,330 players on their month's free trial"

The 13 million figure is out by a few orders of magnitude, but Eve is usually pretty busy - its not uncommon to see 30,000 people logged-on on an evening, and not too long ago they hit something like 40,000 concurrent users.

That may not sound much compared to WOWs 10 million customers, but the Eve figures are of course on the same server, in the same place so its not like you never see anyone, unlike some MMOs.

Occasional lag and other problems aside, its the only MMO I've stuck with, and I'm approaching my 2nd year in-game.

And finally, for anyone thinking of trying it out, check out 'Eve University' in-game - we help new pilots get up to speed and over the practically vertical learning curve.

I tried Eve during a time there was that whole GM abuse or something.

I'm much more comfortable with Armada Online. Hey, Eurog. Why not give that game some love? :)

Oh look, people making a big deal about eve being played on one server :(

If you want to talk about eves unique points, talk about the politics and market to a lesser degree, the fact its played on one large highly unstable server isnt one of them...unless you count not being able to master stability since beta a good thing.

Could never get in to Eve, love the idea of a massive sandbox but I really need an off ship avatar, staring at a ship all day just kills the immersion for me. I need to be able to do something ground based to break it up.

Gaol - They are introducing a new part to the game that will allow your character to walk around stations, I think; so...you're in luck!

Wait a minute.... I signed up to EVE via their website and it costs me 15 increasingly expensive euros a month, but if I had joined via steam it would only cost me 15 increasingly worthless US Dollars a month. I am going to cancel my subscription and rejoin via steam if I can.
