Europe gets EUR 50 Wii price cut News

Wii News by Games Industry.biz

25 September, 2009

The price of the Nintendo Wii has dropped to EUR 199 across Europe, leaving the UK the only region to not benefit from a price cut. Sniff.

As reported earlier in the week, the Wii will still retail around the GBP 179 price in the UK when a new Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus bundle is introduced in October, despite Nintendo lowering the trade price for the console.

GamesIndustry.biz understands that retailers such as Amazon, Play.com, GAME and HMV will continue to sell the new bundle for around GBP 179.99, the same as the current offering.

Yesterday Nintendo announced significant price cuts for the US and Japan, the first time in almost three years since the console was first introduced.

Wouldn't encourage me to purchase one. I really don't think pricing is the issue here. You either want one or you don't.

We're still getting a better deal in the UK considering the exchange rate.

200 euros = £180..and we get Wii Sports Resort included while the rest of Europe doesn't (which can easily be sold on ebay for £35 if you don't want it).

I don't know anyone who bought a Wii who didn't later go on to regret it. That price is totally crazy considering what you can get for similar money.

Well I've bought two, one for myself and another for my son and I don't regret either purchases. So now you know one person.

Regardless of conversion rates and the strength of the pound, just looking at the black and white facts that the US, Japan, and the rest of Europe are getting a price cut a lot of people are going to come to the conclusion that the UK's getting shafted as usual.

I was a release-day purchaser of the Wii but flogged it a year on for a PS3 (for round about the same price). I might be tempted back to it if a range of good MotionPlus games come out. That's what I originally bought the thing for - full motion. Over the months it dawned on me everything was about waggling so it had to go for not performing as advertised.

@GingerNathan

A serious question. Do you actually use your Wii on anything like a regular basis?

I have all three consoles and, even when my intention is to play the Wii, I end up switching on either the PS3 or 360 instead.

Your inability to press the correct button is not Nintendo's fault.

There are plenty of good games on the Wii. Although it is skewed towards shovelware and family fun, that does not mean it is the end of solo 'core' gaming. The PS2 did not end the world by being full of tat for kids, idiots, and families: and nor shall the Wii.

Seems to me the UK is hit by the weaker Pound. Nintendo obviously doesn't like making less money of UK persons then of other Europeans (who pay in Euro's)

50$ on rebate on the 360 since the pricecut. Is that also in Europe or just the US? EG could help me solve my question cause a buddy of mine is gonna go get him one. On topic, yeah Wii's sales are droping now that the bigger guns are also cheaper in the market. its only normal, and to think Wii had started dropping sales ( FINALLY! cause its been selling like crazy from day one... its amazing ) before the price drops and I havent checked ever since how things are with Wii. Personally I will only get a Wii if.... I dont even know what it takes for me to buy a Wii. As much as I adore Nintendo and it's experience in the g aming bits, Wii is just not me.

I'll stick with my 360. Its way more possible Ithink to buy a PS3 for me later on in the future for minor reasons than a Wii for no reasons :/

Thing is the pound isn't really weak right now, it's just not as strong as it used to be. When the pound was strong we were told currency rates had no bearing on pricing. Now it's fallen back to normal suddenly it does.

Yes I think so, even if I am engrossed in a single player game on my 360 or PS3, at least once or twice a week it'll come on for a bit of family multi-player. Having said that these last couple of weeks I've been concentrating on Prime Trilogy, so my 360 hasn't been touched and my PS3 has only been on for films.

My consoles are in different rooms: Wii is in family room and gets quite a lot of action with StooMonster Juniors they particularly like it on projector at 120-inchs; next-gen consoles in my office along with Le Corbusier chaise longue and dedicated Kuro; PC also in office, as is Mac but don't do gaming on that.

So, I am quite happy to play Wii with kids or friends (plus the odd SMG or RE4 or Metroid, etc) but play other consoles and PC on my own / over the internet.

It did, sort-of: Nintendo kept the RRP the same but increased the price to the retailer. A cynical person (i.e. me) might say that was so they could say "we didn't increase the price, the retailers did".

They dropped the retailer price back to the old one again recently.

While we're on the subject, I bought my Wii at release and haven't used it in about 8-9 months but I don't regret buying it, playing Galaxy and Super Ghouls and Ghosts was enough for me so far and there are some damn good games in the pipeline.

Edit: Oh and Super Mario World too of course. God, I love that game, the first one I got on my SNES back in 92... *sigh*

Edit: And Zelda Link to the Past. I still have a SNES but it's nice to reduce the amount of stuff under the TV.

Well, I wasn't writing a personal add, looking to find people who enjoy their Wii (not a euphemism), but thanks anyway.

I don't deny that there are people out there who do enjoy playing there Wii regularly, I just wonder how large a proportion that is, compared with those that play it a few times, and then let it gather dust. Anecdotally it would appear small is all I'm saying.

Considering that the manufacturing costs for the Wii must be quite a bit cheaper by now, and lets not forget it was already a cheap console to begin with, I personally think it's just another kick in the teeth for British consumers. I mean this is the only console that has got more expensive since release and not cheaper. How can they honestly justify that?

The problem is, that until we Brits stop paying these people whatever money they ask for, then they're going to keep charging us whatever they fancy. Rip off Britain is partly our fault for being too willing to pay the rip off prices.

I bought a Wii at release (or as soon as a website told me they had stock somewhere!) and later my brother donated a 360 to me. I was burgled, they took both consoles. I bought another Wii. I thought about it but in the end did not buy another 360.

If anyone wants to list a bunch of games I've missed out on for the 360 or PS3, I'll just direct their attention to the PC of mine on which I play that game, or at least that kind of game - and it's hooked up to my TV and played with a pad. And I'm not paying a premium for online. Or listening to a loud fan. Et cetera.

I'll get marked down, I know, but I just can't see a better alternative to what I'm doing. Or at least see why my alternative is wrong.

As a current owner I'm disappointed that they're not forcing the motionplus bundling everywhere.

It's important that a userbase for this peripheral builds as quickly as possibly, as it really is quite a leap in functionality, akin to the playstation getting analogue sticks.

@donnie - I knew someone would come up with a list of console exclusives. At this point I could list PC exclusives, but I'm not going to. Pointless arms race.

Instead I will admit that I'm foregoing a small list of games but the entry price that those games entails does not justify the outlay. I don't want to pay £250 plus £40 per game plus online fee if applicable when there will be a game for the PC which scores just as high and is clamouring for my attention. I can't play everything, and so will have to drop those games that require me to buy a console to play.

However, the PC doesn't have a pervasive equivalent to motion control, and so I'm still playing the Wii. I have in other threads stated that if the PS3 had the Wands from the get-go I'd have bought that, and as it is I'll be buying one once the Wand is out and supported games reach a critical mass, or it gets a 'killer-app'. But right now a few exclusives don't weigh up against the list of games out for the PC I haven't gone anywhere near yet due to time restraints (as in I don't play 24/7 :) )

For me, i own a 360 and a wii. Halo 3 i burned through in a few nights, recently played through saints row 2 - which i loved.. But years after i bought the game I *STILL* turn on my wii in an attempt to finish mario galaxy... only 10 stars to go with luigi now..

The other game which has been getting a lot of love from me recently is metroid trilogy - which i'm being an anal player with, trying to get EVERYTHING scanned, etc.

I also go a lot of play out of punch out earlier this year, and i imagine one "boy and his blob", and nsmb2 will get a lot of play when they come out too.

So i REALLY dont get this bollocks people spout about the wii not having any good games.. It's getting just as much attention (if not more) than my 360.. But that's mainly because the games i have on it, arent the type which can be completed in a few hours..

I've had mine since launch day (and don't own another console) and I haven't regretted it for a second. Things are getting better and better in my opinion, it has arguably the best version of football (PES) and Tennis (Grand Slam) of any system, both of which have staggering depth and eat up many, many hours of my time. Wii Sports Resort is currently taking up most of our gaming time though, kayaking = much hilarity.

My parents have had one for a year now and still play it a couple times a week, only last week I was playing WSR with my 3yr old nephew (who is frighteningly good), yet a few hours later I can play against my parents on the same game and still have loads of fun.

The length of games is irrelevant in my opinion, most of my Wii games are biased towards high-score gaming, which for me usually means they last for years. That's what saddens me about this hardcore/core gamer nonsense, anyone who played games in the 80s an awful lot would probably appreciate more Wii games than they give it credit for.

I dont think its a question of price ,the Wii has always had a low enough pricepoint to allow most people to buy it if they really desired it.

Few people that havent bought the machine at 250 euros will suddendly say "this is what I was expecting ,I save 50 euros !" and rush to buy the machine. It can decide some undecided people at best.

Most people I know with the machine doesnt use it at all or have just pirated it and use it for the lightgun games as a modern DUck Hunt machine ...

And sorry to burst some people bubble but the best versions of PES are still on the HD consoles.

I agree GBP ROE makes imports for GB more expensive so no price cut here for a while. Unless GB has something else to sell interest rates will stay low and ROEs won't come back in our favour so we are going nowhere for a long time!! Cheers Gordon!

Utter bollocks. PES on the Wii is a totally different game to the PS3/360 version, and far, far superior. Most so-called 'hardcore' gamers can't even cope with the new controls, and go back to playing FIFA, humbled but furiously denying how shit they are.

PES Wii allows you to control the bloke with the ball and direct other members of your team accurately, allowing for true tactical play. Give it a few years and EA will have ripped the idea off and applied it to FIFA (they've already ripped it off and put it in the Madden games).

Wii is the most under used console over the longer time period, but recently been spending hours storming through the Metroid Prime Trilogy and now nearing the end of Echoes. There are still certain games that any serious gamers would be remiss to miss out on including Galaxy.

Oh there is also Dead Space Extraction whichs add to the backstory of Dead Space canon, and is a reasonable good on rail shooter if you like that sort of game.

Still only a handful of game that you must have and Wii should be weighted on those 'must have' games alone. Too many garbage and kiddies/family cheap games cluttering up the game library and not enough great multi platform games that are gracing 360 and PS3 (and PC), ie Batman.

Nintendo will pay for that with their reputation being more and more assoicated with that kind of tosh.

Get down to a cold field on a Saturday morning, and you can buy at least four or so classic systems for the price many will spend on another update of FIFA! I bagged an N64, Acorn Electron, Atari 2600 Woody (6 switches), Gameboy Color and a load of games for £35 at the weekend - I would have got some nice Japanese Megadrive games for 50p each if I had been 30secs quicker!

I don't have time to finish the games I do own on any platform. Some of you kids have too much time on your hands. That doesn't mean there is a law that the Wii must always have good games available, so it gets used 24/7 if people require.
The Wii is still a dirt cheap casual toy to most adults, same price as a netbook or ipod, cheaper than a smart phone or PSPGo.
