Europe gets date for PS3 Dual Shock

It's out this week, will cost GBP 40.

Sony has announced the DualShock 3 wireless rumble controller for PS3 will arrive in Europe on 4th July and cost GBP 39.99.

More than 28 million DualShock controllers have been sold since the first iteration appeared in 1998. Now, according to Sony, DualShock 3 is "the first choice for all gamers", except presumably those who own Xbox 360s or Wiis.

And have no fear, Sixaxis fans - "DualShock 3 retains the high-precision, high-response motion-sensitive aspects that have made Sixaxis so popular."

Apparently "almost all" future PS3 games will support the controller, and rumble functionality will also be released for older titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

(Update: Or rather, those games already do, as do a number of others including GTA IV, Haze and Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection.)

    LOL.

Ok, I'll import again if I need another one.
  • berelain #3 4 years ago

    GACK!!!

    £40?????

Thats.... ridiculous. I'll import one, then.
  • Cloudane #4 4 years ago

How much are the Americans paying for it?

It seems quite dear when you consider the option of getting the twin/double SIXAXIS controller pack for £40!
  • bad09 #5 4 years ago

The last generation starts when Sony say so....

About bloody time, someone should loose their job for the rumble fiasco.

Edit - To those saying ouch, after rechargeable battery 360 controller will cost around the same and wiimote and nunchuk costs more so it's not too bad and I'm sure we will be able to pick them up cheaper.

    Fourty quid?

Does it come with a guitar or something? Or a game?
  • chrisjm #8 4 years ago

before the sony fanboys get here i'll reply to them ;)

yes it is but that would be a 2nd fully featured controller, not a replacement to the lite version with the console.
  • Arnold__ #9 4 years ago

Only $80 then for something costing $50 in the US. Sold!
  • yupyup #10 4 years ago

    YEEEEEE-OUCH... a penny shy of £40 for a DualShock 3 controller?!?!? :o

Paid £32 for mine on import six months ago...

... albeit I was unfortunate enough to get landed with import tax. Even so most people were able to import theirs for less than £35 and really I'd have expected it to cost no more than £34.99 RRP. Sony are just being greedy IMO but no doubt they'll argue that the extra cost is because of the SIXAXIS motion controls *and* vibration functions rather than doing the "right" thing which is to drop the price of the original SIXAXIS and price the new DualShock 3 controller at its price point.

    *sigh*

EG - "Apparently "almost all" future PS3 games will support the controller, and rumble functionality will also be released for older titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue."

All those games ALREADY support rumble, EG, the latter two out of the box with no patch required!!! ;)
  • Aretak #14 4 years ago

I paid £24 for one on eBay in anticipation of them being ridiculously overpriced here. Yay.
  • mischief #15 4 years ago

  • systems #16 4 years ago

I already imported a couple for £32 each months ago. You'd have to be retarded to wait for the privilege of paying extra for the UK one. (I think I used games-asia where it is currently £31).

When are we going to start seeing the Dualshock 3 as the standard pack-in controller for hardware bundles?

  • t8yman #20 4 years ago

    @ BAD09

yeah, but 360 owners dont have to ditch their controller when the rechargeable battery gives up the ghost.
  • johnnybrn #21 4 years ago

Is it in the PS3 base unit as standard from now on?
  • bad09 #22 4 years ago

    @ t8yman

So what is the life span of the ps3 controllers then? Surely they must have a pretty long life?
  • SeesThroughAll #23 4 years ago

So what is the life span of the ps3 controllers then? Surely they must have a pretty long life?

Battery wise, they should be able to last five to six years. But even then, you should still be able to use them wired through USB.
  • Darren #24 4 years ago

@t8dyman - Neither do PS3 owners... you can use the mini USB cable that comes with all PS3s and still use the controller that way. Yeah the lead is short but you can pick up longer ones relatively cheaply if you want. This is no different from having to fork out extra for the Plug and Play lead or additional rechargeable batteries for the 360 controller. Also Sony have said that they'll replace dead batteries in PS3 controllers for FREE.
  • Kiigan #25 4 years ago

I can import it from China, and it'll still be cheaper.
  • SeesThroughAll #26 4 years ago

@Darren: Also Sony have said that they'll replace dead batteries in PS3 controllers for FREE.

Oh Sony promised that then. Ahem.
I'm not complaining about the controllers themselves though.
  • Mr_Dodger #27 4 years ago

"Also Sony have said that they'll replace dead batteries in PS3 controllers for FREE. "

Not doubting you, but source for that? Genuine interest.
  • tonynibbles #28 4 years ago

    Heh.
"and rumble functionality will also be released for older titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue"
If anyone actually read the press release, you'd see it that rumble was added for those titles in Firmware 1.94.

Glad I got mine back in December,Uncharted wouldn't have been the same without it...
  • kangarootoo #29 4 years ago

The RRP might be £40, but no one is going to sell them for that.
  • bad09 #30 4 years ago

    @ SeesThroughAll

Cheers mate, 5-6 years is cool, I've always had to replace controllers in that time anyway in previous gens through wear and tear.

    @ Kiigan

True, there is something very wrong with the world if you can ship from across the world cheaper than buying from the shop down the road!!
  • SeesThroughAll #31 4 years ago

Glad I got mine back in December,Uncharted wouldn't have been the same without it...

This. Have to say too, the tilt controls in Uncharted were never too intrusive and worked fine.
  • DFawkes #32 4 years ago

I still wouldn't bother if it was half the price it is in the US, I'm not fussy about rumble.
  • SBfistfun #33 4 years ago

    GBP 40!!!! Outrageous.

Why not take my future children's souls whilst your at it!
  • bad09 #34 4 years ago

    @ DFawkes

I don't know if I'm fussed but after playing PS2 or 360 I do miss rumble when playing on PS3. Can't wait for rumble on MGS4!

    Speaking of MGS I'm curious...

What happens to the Psycho Mantis sixaxis no rumble joke in MGS4 if you're using DS3?

  • WinterSnowblind #39 4 years ago

    @Darren

But remember, you only need ONE play and charge kit for all your controllers. I bought a new 360 controller from DVD.co.uk for £20, and a battery pack for it for £5. It didn't need another charge cable because my last controller came with one.
  • Dizzy #40 4 years ago

    >thanks, dizzy...

Actually... it seems like pound is very low against Euro now. So it is more like 52. My mistake.
  • magikdodo #41 4 years ago

@bad09: nothing special, psycho only screams, rumble is back when u place your controller on the floor thats all
  • KayJay #42 4 years ago

£40 is the RRP... You would be silly to pay that...

  • the_dudefather #46 4 years ago

what a coincidence, just bought one last week for £33 total, hope this news does not effect the ebay price for my sixaxis
  • Miths #47 4 years ago

I waited three weeks for my imported DS3 to finally arrive about a month ago - I would happily have paid £80 to avoid that rather lenghty delivery time :).
  • Moz #48 4 years ago

Again like the PS3 it self it seems expensive until you compair it to the 360 plus the extra you'd need to buy!

And no dout £35 for a DS3 will be easy enough to find.
  • Artemus #49 4 years ago

Going for £24.78 on VG+ at the moment, excluding P&P.
  • Ryze #50 4 years ago

    Ripoff.

    Now they'll have to bundle 2 with a PS3 before I'll bite.
  • stampax #51 4 years ago

  • Vin #55 4 years ago

  • Arwin #56 4 years ago

Nah, it was production capacity that delayed the EU launch I think.

Anyway, almost any game worth playing has already supported rumble since late last year, so that's at least worth something. Just about every game I own supports it.
  • Kropotkin #57 4 years ago

It would appear Sony are using the same economic rules EA Ltd used for Rock Band price setting in Europe. Just because the US$ is so weak right now none of the big 3 really want to sell any of their product in the US. To make up for this they decide to shaft the old world thanks to the strong currencies here. This is a theory mooted by many of late and one that may have some legs...
  • penhalion #58 4 years ago

34.99 childrem from the above link

Shame it should of shipped with the console in the first place

    Still steep though

24.99 would of sold alot of people
  • GamesConnoisseur #60 4 years ago

Months late than what Sony had orginially said it will be out, but here it is! Only too damn glad I had good 9 months or so from my imported DS3 and still would be cheaper to import!
  • Latinleader #61 4 years ago

    Let me think...

New Joypad for under £40 (as the shops would say), or a new game...

Tough decision... but I think I'll go for the game :p

And yes, it would HAVE sold well.

  • steoc4 #63 4 years ago

Heh, they announce this the day after I finally order one from the US, typical. Saving money on an American one anyway.

Not that I'm too pushed about rumble, only picked one up because the rubber came off the left stick on my sixaxis. The funny thing is that I mentioned to my brother that I was getting a replacement controller that vibrates and his response was "the current one doesn't vibrate?" - using it for a year and a half and never noticed, neither would I if I wasn't reading about it missing such a 'vital' feature constantly.
  • Miths #64 4 years ago

    @evilfoxhound and steoc4

Some people obviously don't care for rumble effects - or are just indifferent to it. Personally I think they have the potential to add significantly to the overall experience in several game genres.
Playing racing games without rumble for instance, is in my opinion a rather flat experience. Sure, it doesn't come even remotely close to actual force feedback in a steering wheel (assuming a proper game implementation, not sure how that fares on consoles, I've still only used my Logitech G25 with various PC racing sims), but it certainly does help you feel at least a bit more connected to the track.

I also like it in shooters - and with no rumble patch for COD4, it was nice to get it in Battlefield: Bad Company, where you can really feel explosions, tanks rolling by etc.

And then there's MGS4. I didn't actually notice how often the rumble effects were present during actual gameplay (I think they were rather subtle, perhaps even a tad more subtle than I would have preferred), but I was extremely impressed by the implementation at key points during cut scenes, where they were often used to great effect to enhance certain movements or feelings.

Hell, even a little PSN game like High Velocity Bowling has some really neat rumble effects, which combined with the pretty unique use of motion control gives it a very tactile feel.
  • callum9999 #65 4 years ago

"Most people are going to import them at just under £35"

What planet are you living on? Virtually everyone would just buy it in a British shop for the sake of £5 (assuming there are no discounts).
  • johnnybrn #66 4 years ago

Is everyone in here on crack? Why would you want a controller with a last-gen feature!!!

A PS2 dualshock costs 13 quid (15 RRP.) Third party wireless versions are also 13 quid. Tilt sensors do not cost 25 quid each.

Sony should never have hired that absurdist comedian to choose their prices.
  • Darren #70 4 years ago

  • Moz #75 4 years ago

    *sigh* just for completeness

PS3 DS3 - £40 (Though there will be plenty of places selling for £35)

    X360 controller - £32 + play and charge £14.50 = £46.50 (that's the shop to prices)

    Wiimote + nunchuck = £39.98 (shopto) and that's without rechargeable batterpack which is anoth £10 - £15

Which makes the DS3 the cheapest controller with rumble on this gen systems.

  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #76 4 years ago

Which makes the DS3 the cheapest controller with rumble on this gen systems.

    No it isn't.

If you can put up with wires, like we have done for 30 years (and like you'll still need to do with a play-and-charge type cable attached) you could save yourself almost 20 quid.
  • Moz #77 4 years ago

now that's just being picky. the point i was making was that compared to ms and nintys offerings the ds3 is the best deal. obviously 3rd party and wired controllers will be cheaper
  • FladgeMangle #78 4 years ago

    Forty quid? Leave it out!

When I read this I immediately went to ebay and got my (planned) second DS3 for £28.51, including free delivery.

Anyone who wants a DS3 should go to Alpha Pro Camera* and get one for a reasonable price. Maybe Sony will reduce the cost if everybody imports a cheap one.

    * I dont have anything to do with this ebay seller, they're just the cheapest DS3 outlet I've found
  • sneetch #79 4 years ago

    @callum9999

"Most people are going to import them at just under £35"

What planet are you living on? Virtually everyone would just buy it in a British shop for the sake of £5 (assuming there are no discounts)."

Well, for the sake of €5 I'd buy local. For the sake of €15-20 I'd buy online (possibly from a British shop, depending on exchange rate). I wish Eurogamer would find out and supply the Euro price, if only to maintain the illusion that this is a European gaming site. *cough* ;)

As for the general furor over the prices, these relative prices were set long before the current consoles came out; why would Sony (a Japanese company) charge UK customers a price that's based on the current US exchange rate? Let's see, RRP it's $55 for the controller & $60 for MGS4 in the US, £40 for the controller & £50 for MGS4 in the UK, seems like a (relative) bargain to me. Those poor Americans are getting (relatively) screwed.

Edit: and people are right; Wii controllers sets are more expensive, 360 controllers are more expensive if you buy the charge pack which is required for equivalent functionality (I use rechargeable AA batteries, myself). This isn't too bad, comparatively speaking.
