Hmm MK Wii higher than Mass Effect?

Have to agree with Simon's comment with Mario Kart Wii luck definitely outweighs ability.

I'm glad to see the Wii title that disappointed me so much that I sold the system shortly after getting the thorough knifing it deserves.

I couldn't even get any enjoyment from Super Smash Bros when I was pissed, with loads of mates around having a go too. And that's the only way to get any fun out of 95% of the Wii's software....
I thought it was facking awful, and I really can't see the appeal.
A question for the fans. Is there actually a deep fighting system underneath it all, or is it as mindless as it seemed when I played it for a couple of hours. I was just frantically pressing the main attack button, all whilst looking for that sooper dooper glowing orb thing that gives you a mighty special move. Was that really it?

God Of War on the other hand was the most fun I've ever had with a PSP.

Edit: Oh and I'm not THAT much of a disgusting Wii hater. I thought Mario Kart was darned good fun, obviously not that much different from the other versions, but the motion control actually seemed responsive in an arcadey way, and it's definitely one of the better Wii titles I've played.

I'm not denying being at the sherry (rum actually, what with not being an old woman and all), but my comments on MK Wii are being taken a little out of context :) Obviously people are still having fun with it, or they wouldn't vote it onto the list at all - I was simply pointing out that among my friends, for whom the previous versions of the game were party staples for months if not years, MK Wii was a flash in the pan which disappeared after a week. I don't know why - I thought it was rather good, personally - but it just didn't seem to float people's boats enough to make them want to gather around the telly.

I don't have a problem with the games they've chosen in this (under the mountain of games released this year, surely being in the top 50 is a great achievment?), it's just that they themselves don't seem to actually like any of the games they've chosen.

I know this list is entirely subjective, that's not my point. There should be no excuse for a developer to release such a buggy game in 2008. I can see there is something fun in F3 if I spent 10 hours on it, but this was cut short by the constant lock-ups. I could have brought up this issue around release, but I have only gotten around to it during Christmas Eve. Wonderful. It went from an 8/10 experience to a swift return to the shop.

And I am not going to buy the console version: the prices are ridiculous over here. F3 on the console costs almost double the PC version, and I have just bought a new rig. Besides, I hear that the console version is not such a flawless experience.

@Cid: "Smash Brother isn't open to button-mashing at all. Well...it is if all players are doing it, but a button masher will always get his rear-end tanned by someone who knows what they're doing."

To borrow a phrase from Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame, you then become 'that guy', the one who practices a party game on their own and is then so much better than everyone else it defeats the 'having fun' object of a party game and everyone buggers off to play Rock Band. While button mashing isn't a guaranteed win against someone who's played way too much it DOES let you hold your own and results in some wins.

For me (and all-bar-one of my gaming-related friends) Smash Bros Brawl was the biggest letdown of the year simply because it doesn't do anything new. I've played and owned all three Smash Bros games right back to the N64 days in 1999 and it just hasn't changed. In a group of four Smash Bros veterans we got bored pretty quickly as there wasn't anything we've seen before. In a group of people who hadn't played before it was fun and everyone had a good time... for about an hour. Then everyone just felt they'd seen it all and asked to switch to something else.. I was really looking forward to it as well but after playing it my Wii was traded in for, of all things, a PS3 as there simply wasn't anything else on the horizon that I wanted and SSBB clearly wasn't going to hold my attention until something else decent came along.

I think the problem here is the same thing that affected MGS4. These are games built for the fanboys and if you're not one they tend to leave you scratching your head wondering what the big deal is. With MGS4 it's the massive amount of story which doesn't make much sense if you don't know the backstory from the earlier games. With Smash Bros it's the appeal of playing 'what if' with the Ninty universe and a few guest characters. If that floats your boat then it's amazing, if not you're left with a good party game that doesn't deliver anything like the depth you need for a long-term time soak of a fighting game.

The fact that R2 is below Co:WaW means the list is an utter failure...for me, anyway. If the PoS that is WaW gets anywhere near a top 50 then be prepared to have repackaged sequels rammed up your arse for years to come.

Wow. The bitching in this thread. And it's only 50-41!

Why do people get so upset when different opinions to their own emerge? Personally, I don't think it's about the top 50. I think it's people getting upset because they don't have a website to vent their own opinions.

And they don't have a website of their own because they're too busy complaining on EG to make one. My God, I think I've got it! :O

Oh, and I mostly agree with the 50-41. Can't say for sure as I haven't played them all.

I love this list! Not because of the ratings, but it collects all the idiots on one comments-section, so its easy to ignore all the posters that keep whining about the actual list. :p

I bought Bangai-O Spirits yesterday (as it was on sale, and had been praised lots by GameCentral/teletext), and am mostly enjoying it so far. Although it is pretty darn hard.

Shame mkwii is relatively low though. That's probably been my most played game this year. The demented struggle to get 3 stars on all of the levels, and then the endless online fun.

I'm glad to see N+ make the list. It is one of my most played games of this year, purely because of the score tables which I haven't been so competative over in years.

lol yeah.... but no. Bullshit. I'm lame at Brawl, don't even own the game, I play it at my mate's house occasionally (or he brings it over) and I often get trounced by him because I'm only slightly accustomed to the game. When we invite over a total newbie, however, I easily win pretty much 100% of the time despite their button mashing fury, because I -am- slightly accustomed to it. On the other hand, my mate who owns the game (and is not a true hardcore player) would in turn get shown every corner of the stage by "that guy" who knows their wavedashing or whatever else.

All those comments made by desperate yahtzee wannabes are just that, complete and utter fucking bullshit.

I completely disagree with what's written about Mario Kart Wii. I've played and enjoyed that game for months and months. The shortcomings of the single player mode are well compensated for by the online mode, which was a lot better than MKDS's online mode. I wonder whether the people who gave their view on Mario Kart Wii have actually played the game online,

Saying that the gameplay was designed to please casual gamers is lazy, cliche and simply not true. Getting a star rating or better on the 150cc cups is hard and, admittedly, frustrating. But there's definitely nothing casual about it.

Kristan Reed: I seriously wonder which other shooters my colleagues have been playing for this to feature in their top tens. I know I rated it lower than most, but my god some of this was shockingly awful. Blown up by a man pointing an RPG in your face? No worries, just run around the corner and recharge your health and bop him on the nose with a pencil.

Because respawning back at the base and having to repeat the mission up to that point would be much more fun wouldn't it? Wouldn't it? Would it? No.

Having to hide in a corner for ten seconds was punishment enough for fucking up in a game so silly. You must get really wound up every time you watch an action movie and the hero keeps on not dying when he should have done.
