I played 21 games on this list and four of my top five are in the top five. I could hardy agree more with this list.

I'm not sure that playing a video game, online with other people, via the faceless entity that is the internet, really ranks very highly on the "not much like a hermit type activity" chart.

There's some really good quotes from the readers for many of the games. Some of them more than worthy of Eurogamer's very own quality wordage. And also some hilarious "My best game of the year but this bit was rubbish and this bit was crap and this bit ruined the game and this bit made it almost uplayable. Still great though" type quotes from people who obviously let both their personalities write in at the same time.

Fallout 3 is a worthy winner. The main story is a little bit tame in the end (and a bit short), the climactic battle is even tamer, many of the environments are samey after a while, the 3rd person view was awful and a few of the side quests are a bit tacked on. Those are the only niggles though in a game of awesome ambition and near bang-on execution. Fabulous attention to detail for such a massive game world, wonderful breadth of characters, factions and enemies, engaging weapons system. It really brings out the kleptomaniac scavenger in all of us!

Some of the games on this list I just don't get, I'm sorry. Mario Kart? Really? Come on... it's the same game as the ones before with (slightly) shinier graphics.

LBP? The novelty gamers novelty game. You'll have traded it in by March.

Oh and Braid is an awesome game, but the EG review... surely your worst ever. What a load of pretentious w*nk.

I agree with most of the choices in the top ten, except Braid (didn't like it at all) and Gears of War 2 (good but not that good) wouldn't be in mine.

My top five would be:

1. GTA IV
2. Fallout 3
3. Metal Gear Solid 4
4. Devil May Cry 4
5. Dead Space

"wtf are you talking about men??? graphics are very importante dude, they contribute to the immersiveness and atmosphere of a game like no other thing, gameplay makes the game functional and yes its important, but sayin something like (and quite often they're nothing) in what concerns graphics is ridiculous, a real gamer should care for graphics as well unless you only play MegaDrive."

Oh dear, for once I seem to share an opinion with apology. Graphics are equally important. The interaction process of games is made up from two parts: input (gameplay, controls, etc.) and output (sound, graphics, etc.). This output is 50% of the game. Not only is it a driving factor in immersion and experience, it's also a driving element that forces innovation in gameplay. Graphics force innovation in gameplay as new concepts can be visualised and gameplay forces innovation in graphics as new innovations need to be visualised.

Would you be able to play your latest game if we only had zork 1 graphics? No.

Take LBP i.e. Would it be possible without graphical improvements since the 1st game? No. Would it be as cute? No. The way they present it is already half the game.

People who say that graphics are not important are talking out of their arse, trying to be cool.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to take a bath for agreeing with Mr. muppet over there.

Seems like a fair list apart from GTA. GTA 1 was all kinds of awesome but GTA 2 was disappointing. Skipped everything since that and was finally tempted to buy gta4 again after all that hype. Colour me disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game but it's not very interesting either and definitely not the awesome game that all the reviews raved it to be.

Oh well, in the end I can blame only myself for falling for hype.

My Top 3 would've been something like this....

1. Gears of War 2
2. Ninja Gaiden
3. COD 5

Can't believe Ninja Gaiden's position in this list..... I thought that game was awesome.... It's the only game i've refused to trade in so far. It's a keeper like GOW 2. I'll probably get shut of COD 5 cos i just don't enjoy the multiplayer like i did on COD 4.

As soon as someone utters the words "a real gamer" my ears just kind of switch off.

I think maybe there is a part of my brain that says "there is nothing you can learn here, its not worth your bother to go any further, I shall save you the effort of even deciding".

Graphics might be important, but I utterly dispute whether they are AS important as gameplay. And I am way beyond trying to be cool, about anything.

A simple test.

Take a good game and make its graphics a bit shit. Is it still just as fun? If not, how much fun has it lost? If it was a stonker in the first place, its probably still quite fun would you agree?

Now take the same original game and make the gameplay a bit shit? The result? A shit game with nice graphics.

Why! This list only means theres a lot of PS3 owners on this site. Lets wait for the EG list.

Edit: Of course there are good games on the PS3. Most of them is on this list.

Not sure about that. From that list you might read Metal Gear Solid, LBP (if you're into that sort of thing) and... erm... struggling already...

Most of the other good games are multis, and almost without exception done better on Xbox360, which is half the price.

Not a fanboy btw, I own a PS3 but it's gathering dust.

Mathematically the less good games the PS3 has, the more should show up in the list in top positions since the PS3 owners have less to vote on ;) Of course that all depends on the distributions of consoles/pc owners on this site.

Didn't even see a vote for this. Oh well. I'd agree with 4 of the top 5. I might agree with all 5 but I haven't played MGS4 yet. Shows you that Eurogamer is a bit naff sometimes with their reviews after seeing how high Dead Space and MGS 4 got. I would probably have GTA further back in the top 5, but otherwise I can agree with it.

Saints Row 2 should have been higher. That game was just pure fun. It would have been a top 10 game for me.

Surprising lack of sports games this year, with Fifa 09 at 11. Usually there are a lot more. Not that I'm complaining, most of them are just rehashes year after year.

I wonder if this will influence the Eurogamer staff chart this year, since it went first this time.

Yay! I was quoted!

I just want to make it known - Gaming this year has been absolutely wonderful! My Falcon 360 Elite has really come full circle (without an RRoD in sight)!

Wonderful premium games - too many to play and finish! An absolute ton of dowloadable arcade games: Rez, Soul Calibur, Samurai Shodown, SSFIITHDR, Ikaruga, Braid...

Then there's the 30-60Gb of demos on my HDD!!!! I can sample all of the shit games that I'd never ever consider buying, or ever play in previous gens! Ironman! Superman! Turok! Alone In The Dark! Sonic (new ones)! Utter shite!

Isn't it wonderful!?!?!

Interesting stuff,

I seem to have been quoted for two Valve titles; I’d just like to state for the record I do not get commission for such common pleasantries. There’s a fair amount of cross platform titles in that list along with developers being allowed by publishers (or is it the other way around) to take risks and try something slightly different, which I think should be commended. At least it’s not a ‘Battle of the Consoles’ where as I’d assume from the frothing at the gashes by faceless posters in these here comment sections the bias towards Micro$ofts mainstream platform may have edged some of the, maybe non required, votes.

Other than stating the bleedin’ obvious very happy to see original licenses and digital downloads feature throughout!

RESISTANCE 2, LBP, MGS4, WArhammer On-Line AND GOD OF WAR should have been scored higher, Gears of War 2 in my humble opinion was a letdown, is just more of the same, it showed no innovation in terms of graphics or gameplay, same old same... Crysis Warhead is a good game/expansion, should have been scored a little bit higher too... other then that, that list is not bad.

kangarootoo: You missed the point. Without graphics, that fun game wouldn't even be possible. In fact, without the graphical innovation that goes on all the time NONE of the games we played for the past 20 something years would be possible. Graphics opens new doors in gameplay. SMG? LBP? BK3? None of those would be possible without the graphical progress that has been made since the first game.

You say: "make the graphics a bit shit" but in that you defeat your own point. You still borrow upon the graphical improvements, you are just picky on what you need. With that reasoning I can also make any game every made completely shit. LBP? Let's see how well that works with mere 2d vector graphics or even zork text. It would be a completely shit game that has lost all of it's appeal and most of the micro gameplay mechanics buried in the game would not even be possible.

That doesn't even cover the way the human mind works: Anything nicely packaged will automatically be better received. The way you visualise your gameplay through your interaction process is just as important as what you visualise.

Input, processing and output are all equally important.
