I missed entirely this reader's vote this year. Probably my fault as I read in blog form and miss a few days here and there. But, then I cared (admittedly less and less) more in previous years. As this site follows (sensibly) growing gamer demographic, I agree less with it's opinions.

So, on a positive note, more news and less reviews! Who thought I'd miss Mr.Reed as editor....

@layleeloo: I'd rather read a book [than playing Fallout 3] - well, you may as well theres that much reading it it anyway haha

Hehe. Says more about you than the game buddy. If you start to use your mind through reading books and THEN play the game you are risking yourself to even enjoy Fallout 3... and life. ;-)

Worthy winner - Fallout 3 wasn't perfect but absolutely amazing atmosphere and even 70 hours in I was finding completely new locations and things to do. And I didn't even find the dog!

I revisited Fallout 3 tonight off the back of this list. Call me a rampant homosexual, but I've now poured twenty three hours into this fucking thing and have still yet to see what all the fuss is about. Long walk, boring conversation, long walk, even more boring conversation. Repeat ad infinitum, with some combat scenes. The end.

What's so bowel shattering about that?

Credit to Treyarch, though. They played a blinder this year with COD:WAW. As a dyed-in-the-wool Infinity Ward fanboy/dickrider, I went into this game totally sceptical, expecting nothing. They blew me away with some of the set pieces in that game.

Likewise, Saints Row 2 actually made me laugh. Unlike that other game.

I voted NHL09 and still think it should be in there but as its a minority sport/game (in a lot of europe at least) gets overlooked as i'm sure is the case with many others. Overally though i think EA had a great year, cant remember a disappointing EA release this year NHL, Fifa, TW09 all delivered the goods and then other games like Mirrors Edge were nice to see.
Braid is an interesting choice, sure many like me stayed away from it due to its relatively high price. may have to give it a try in the new year.

This cross-platform top 50 doesn't really work. The thing is a mess.

Also, Fallout 3 is a poorly made RPG which won't stand the test of time.

Oh, look! A backlash against Fallout 3 - How boringly predictable...

Just get over it! Not everybody likes the same things and don't see why you can't just admit that an awful lot of people disagree with you. You are entitled to you opinion, why is it so important that everybody else NEEDS to share it with you?

Yes, I totally agree with Scimarad... 20hrs into Fallout3 and can't wait to continue. Agree with it being N.1.
Besides that not really sure about GTA4 N.2 while again I agree with L4D being somewhere there and would really enjoy having a go a LBP.

Fallout 3 has a lot of potential. That's why it gets a lot of criticism. Also it's that Bethesda keeps making the same mistakes every time (bad/lazy interior level design, unbelievably stupid writing, silly voice acting). I'm not saying it's a bad game. I agree it's one of the best of the year.

The people got it right! Fallout 3 is a remarkable achievement in every way. You'd think that such a huge world would mean compromises in the attention to detail, but even a lone little house in the middle of the wasteland has lots of nice little touches, making the world seem so much more believable. Every place has its unique character, and as you come across new clues you understand more about the world around you (eg why the different vaults look like they do). However, as the game never forces you into any one direction, many people will not even begin to scratch the surface of this world, and thus will be left wondering what all the fuss is about. The combat is more involving than people give it credit for and VATS is the perfect solution for merging the RPS gameplay with the FPS variety.

The fact that I'm 70 hours into the game and still have 30% of the world left to explore, while also considering what it would be like to play with a different character is a testament to how well realised the game world is.

@ fifthcolumn (Fable II comment) - yes, very few games allow you to invite your dog to a threesome.

Not a bad list for a user list. For me personally though, Motorstorm is about 40 places too low. This is an extremely underrated game, loved by any that actually get to play the retail version (which makes me wonder what the Eurogamer reviewer owned or if he's actually human ;) ).

Some predictable scores here. Fallout and GTA scoring so high despite the backlash(es) indicate that hype is a mighty force but also that these games, despite their flaws have some really strong points. Personally, I enjoyed both immensely for the freedom they gave to the player.

Some surprises there (or not?) like SPORE not even managing to break into top 50. I agree the game was a bit of a disappointment of course but still, one would expect the hype machine to do its job here as well. Also I was surprised that The World Ends With You managed to enter top 50. I thought the game was excelent, voted for it (and even got quoted) but was somehow under the impression that not enough people cared for it (not to mention found it brilliant), whatwith the EG review etc. TWEWY is undoubtedly the best new IP Square-Enix released this year and seeing neither The Last Remnant nor Infinite Undiscovery in the top 50 speaks volumes (at least hope someone in SE is listening).

Also, slightly disappointed to see some excellent games being completely ignored. Loco Roco 2 was very high in my top 5 as I thought it actually improved on an already excellent original. So was Patapon that I felt was one of the most imaginative, beautiful and simply fun games to play throughout the year (also, the sequel, Japan only for now, improves on it in many ways). Good to see at least World of Goo getting some attention. Also, hopefully the utterly brilliant Left 4 Dead scoring high across the board (not just on EG) sends some easy to understand signals to the rest of the industry. THIS is how you do online gaming, you twats!

Edit: Ooooh, also Persona 4 is SUBLIME but I'm afraid that it not being out in Europe yet ruled it out this time around. Shame as it improves on P3 in several ways and come next year's annual list there won't be many people around with functioning PS2s/ backwards-compatible PS3s that will remember they played this fantastic game some time early in 2009....

Don't want to be racist, mate, but is English your first language? That made no sense whatsoever.

If anyone wants to put forward an articulate defense of Fallout 3, I'd love to hear it. Believe me, I want to like this game.Tell me why it's worth the grind.

(P.S I spoke to five or six slavers at the Lincoln Memorial last night. All of them said exactly the same thing, word for word. So much for the rich details...)

no quotes :(
thought GTA deserved number 1 purely for the fact of how fun it is online but i guess that fallout has not been out long enough for people to find as many faults in it yet its a great game just hate the combat without VATS. nice to see MGS4 and LBP deservedly so high. no gran turismo 5:p or bionic commando? very strange! and i'm guessing SSFIITHDR will be in next year's list. number 2 behind SFIV ;)

oh and PES didn't deserve to be in the top 50. congrats to FIFA for actually progressing.

"Don't want to be racist, mate, but is English your first language? That made no sense whatsoever."

Really? It made perfect sense to me. I might pick two grammatical issues with it (lack of "I" and misuse of a comma), but aside from that it made for perfect reading and the clarity of what was said was completely intact.

What a bizarre thing to say.

Totally agree on the number 1 spot for Fallout 3. Amazing game. Got most achievements now and played about 70 hours in it's delightfully saddening world. Best game for me in a long, long time. GoW2 would have been my second though. It makes you feel like a macho yourself. Oh..hold on. I am one... And I only went through 2 XBoxes this year, instead of the usual 3, so hurrah for 2008! My PS3 has returned to it's original box, since it doesn't get any playtime anymore. It still is my worst buy ever and still cannot understand why it's so popular. After Resistance 2 Sony lost me. It just doesn't feel RIGHT playing with a PS3. It just doesn't FEEL like a gameconsole. I can't explain it, but the feeling is just there...

@Retibra: It is more like a PC with patches, firmware updates and additonal functionalities slapped on as an afterthought which clutters the XMB more than I care to see. The XMB is a mess in my eyes. Way, way too many options. My son of 7 sure can't navigate the PS3 unless I'm with him. The Xbox, even the new NXE is a piece of cake to navigate. The controller did change: they left out the dualshock and the sixaxis felt like a cheap bit of plastic. I had mine since march 2007, so playing for 1 1/2 year with that thing didn't do that much good to my opinion about the PS3. And don't get me started on the games which still seem to suffer from 'inexperience' with the cell. Even after two years. Their hasn't been ONE single game I played which made me go Wow! or where I sat on the edge of the couch. The PS3 was and is a let down for me.

But getting back on topic now...
