For the first time in a while, I didn't get around to voting for the EG readers' list this year, but it's hard to argue with much of it. I sincerely hope Chrono Trigger is near the top of next year's list: it really should have been in this years, but not enough people have played it as it hasn't got a EU release yet.

Looks a pretty much 'as expected' list, I am not playing as many games as I use to so this is giving me ideas on what to buy next.
Fallout on PC or Gears of War on 360.... hmmm |

Not too bad as far as lists go. It's mostly the top spot for Fallout 3 that I take issue with, I don't think I'll ever understand what gamers love about Bethesdas games since they are so mediocre in every aspect.

Okami should have been higher up, I know it was released in 2006 and the wii port is supposed to be poor but it's still amazing and I gurantee most people experienced it for the first time this year.

your absolutely right, they'r still gorgeous today... but only for people like you and me that have a nostalgic feeling towards them, gameplay is good, but straightforward, if a game where released today exactly like sonic in terms of mechanics and graphics it would be a low budget production for handhelds or PSN / Xboxlive store, nothing more. Graphics are important... any true gamer know's that, a game withought good graphics is like watching a movie with great actors and a terrible script, graphics / gameplay and physics are equally important... keep trying??? i didnt understood that part m8

'X game should have been higher than the Y ranking its got', Dont blame EG at all, its the READERS' top 50 games and thus we are the ones who decided where what games get ranked and so forth.
Still I think we are very much an informed gamers! As the list is pretty good whilst yes like others I do disagree with certain game being placed higher than another in my own personal view, but that is just me. PS3 does have a good showing but so has Wii and X360, and someone can be quite anal by providing tables of which platforms comes out best but I think most important of all its does show the year 2008 as a great one for gamers. Each platform got some great gems and I m just glad to have played a good portion of games in the list, but pleased with the no 1 and the top 10 choices. Looking forward to EG's alternative top 50 list! Interesting: At local Game store PS3 Fallout Special Edition box (the lunchbox) was reduced to £29 but X360 was left at full price, so seem to indicate that in at least my area that PS3 stock are harder to sell than X360? I suppose vice versa would be true in other areas/countries.

My top 5 of the year. I have only tried PS£ games on my house mate's console and only MGS4 seemed good. LBP I got bored after five minutes flat, it reminds of the old nintendo donkey kong just moving left to right and jumping from branch to branch. Dont even get me started on the wii.

I was just about to get outraged that Persona 3 was so low but if you count the combined score as 22 that's not quite so bad:)
Also on Resistance 2: "Improving tenfold on its predecessor in almost every area..." I don't know what game you played but it sure wasn't Resistance 2!

I agree with the top 5 it's pretty much how I'd call it however, I seem to have missed Braid, think I'll have a look at that.

Not a bad list all in all. Fallout 3 being top or thereabouts was predictable, seeing as its an excellent multiplatform game. It wasn't my no.1 pick but (if I was a betting man) I would've backed that to win the readers's poll for that very reason. GTA IV's high place was interesting - a lot of folks complain about it, but there are clearly plenty of fans out there. Which is nice.
Also nice to see that both the PS3 and 360's top exclusives placed so well, although the post count here has surely suffered for it... ;p Also also, Valkyria placed in there! Nice one, my fellow voting readers! Also also also, I got quoted! |

Am I the only one who is sick to death of Fallout 3? I was neither excited nor not bothered about this-I looked at ti with open eyes - not playing a fallout game before, but im sorrym it bored me shitless. I borrowed it from a mate to see if I wanted to buy it, and after 4 hours of play and nearly falling asleep it was a resounding no. Normally I can tell if im gonna like a game in 10 mins, but 4 hours I tried with F3 and Im sorry, I just cant see what all the praise is about. I can certainly see its impressive, even it I dont like it. I just dont think it deserves all the attention its got. I'd rather read a book - well, you may as well theres that much reading it it anyway haha

Glad to see Rez at least made it onto the list, that was definitely my favourite game of 2008 (and since it was a 'cheap' Arcade game, the bang/buck ratio was extremely high). However, Fallout 3 and GTA IV at 1 and 2? I knew in my heart of hearts it was going to happen but it makes me no less disappointed to see that this is the way the majority of gamers want titles to appear in the future. I have to laugh at the quotes on GTA IV's story being deep, involving and progressive - it was boring, thoughtless and utterly devoid of interest from start to fin. As for Fallout 3, I've never played it, but judging by the 'it's Oblivion with guns!' statement that gets ping-ponged around it seems like I avoided it with good reason.

Like Edge, I believe LBP should have been numero uno. such a low rank for No More Heroes and no show for Bangai-O Spirits just makes me want to cast this list to the bin of forgotten lists. And Fallout 3 no. 1? For an engine that has so largely remained unchanged since it's last use that it's new iteration is merely a spiritual sequel begs the question: How? It's hardly innovative in it's design, implementation or art direction (yes the future as viewed from the past is an inspired direction for games, but the greys and blacks tells a different story). Whatever...
