Eurogamer iPhone app launches!

Ad-free text and video content.

Eurogamer is excited to the point of sexual nirvana to announce that we've just launched our very own iPhone application.

'Eurogamer iPhone app launches!' Screenshot 1

Would.

Available now from the iTunes App Store, the Eurogamer application allows you to browse all our content on the go without being bothered by pesky adverts.

You can read news, reviews, previews, interviews and articles, participate in comment threads, view screenshots, go on the forum and even watch the latest videos on Eurogamer TV - in landscape and everything.

Plus, the app has been developed with all the iPhone features you would expect: slidey finger-controlled screens, that page-flipping animation, and an unmistakeable air of sophistication.

"Are you seriously talking to me after those tweets this morning," said proud Eurogamer boss Rupert Loman. "Get out of my office," he added.

Exciting features of the Eurogamer application according to the iTunes App Store:

  • Frequent/intense horror/fear themes
  • Frequent/intense profanity or crude humour
  • Frequent/intense cartoon or fantasy violence
  • Infrequent/mild simulated gambling
  • Infrequent/mild sexual content or nudity
  • Frequent/intense mature/suggestive themes
  • Frequent/intense realistic violence
  • Frequent/intense alcohol, tobacco, drug use or reference to these

The Eurogamer iPhone application is available for £2.39 / €2.99.

You can discuss the app and its future development over on the forum. For the ultimate feedback loop, why not discuss the Eurogamer app on the forum using the Eurogamer app? Frequent/intense good times!

£2.39?!?!! I'll pass and just access the site for free via Safari

  • Hartzu #2 2 years ago

Where's the Nokia S60 app? The user base of those devices is much, much larger than iPhone's.
  • craigy Verified Senior Developer, Eurogamer Network #3 2 years ago

@Hartzu: We're working on a general mobile version of the site for other phones which should be available soon.
  • Spooke #4 2 years ago

why would anyone pay for this? Eurogamer works perfectly well on my phone.
  • DaveTHX #5 2 years ago

Any plans for a free Lite version?
  • AbracadaverAK #6 2 years ago

Ah, how I love hearing people complaining about the pricing of anything in the app store. It's £2.39, for Christ sake.

Do the same people who complain at the price of an app complain when they go into Sainsbury's and buy a sandwich? I know which is better value at £2.39.

The app probably tastes nicer too.
  • AbracadaverAK #7 2 years ago

Also, Spooke, can you also watch all the Eurogamer TV videos on your phone?
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #8 2 years ago

Of course you can continue to use the full version, it's not a problem. Reasons why it's a couple of quid:

    - It took a while to develop
    - There are no adverts
    - EGTV works
    - It's faster and uses less bandwidth
    - Everything, including the forum/comments/screenshots are formatted specifically for the iPhone

It's an optional extra - if you get it, we think you'll like it.
  • Toothball #9 2 years ago

Sounds like a nice idea, but I don't have an iPhone and have no plans to get one ever. Can't wait for the mobile site though. IE Mobile struggles to display the whole site which is a pity.

    @<a href = "http://www.euro gamer.net/articles/eurogamer-iphone-application-launches-blo g-entry#comment1338852">Spooke& lt;/a>:

People may be inclined pay to have the service without adverts. I'd go for it myself if it weren't on iPhone. I would expect that a mobile site would be ad-supported just like regular Eurogamer. And besides, the asking price is less than a magazine and it lasts forever.

  • Beano #10 2 years ago

I like the initiative but there should be a free ad-sponsored version also... I'm not £2.39 paying for this.
  • sopaman #11 2 years ago

Nice to see it coming out, but even though I see why you would charge for it (after all, you had to put some effort into making it) I don't think €3 is the right price, considering other offerings the App Store has for just 1 euro. I think 0,99 would be a more suitable price for something like this.
  • Nightbite #12 2 years ago

Bit of a split-personality response here...

It seems a little pricey to me, I agree with charging something for it, but lets not forget that every single visitor to EG benefits them, SEO-wise at the very least, so charging 2.39 is a bit rich. When I just rushed to download it, I expected it to be free, or 60p at worst. The fact it's £2.39 has given me pause, and i'm a massive EG fan and spend money on apps like it's going out of fashion - so there's little to no chance of winning over someone who isnt a big fan of the site already. Which then leads me to think -- how long before they knock it down to "special offer" 1.19p?

And here's the flip side --
Then again, I buy gamesTM magazine every month for a fiver, and that doesnt have video, so in comparison, this isnt so bad.
  • carrotcake #13 2 years ago

cool I downloaded. watching a egtv video on my iphone now. might even browse eurogamer this way more than the browser version from now on, one less reason to turn on my computer
  • sinelinden #14 2 years ago

It's £2.39 people, skip a coffee and get Eurogamer goodness on the go forever.

Superb work guys, thanks to all involved in the putting together of this corking app.

Now all I need is a better battery life for my iPhone
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #15 2 years ago

I was about to complain about charging for stuff that's available free, but I've been shockingly quickly converted. Decent quality games videos seem often awkward to get hold of on iPhone (so many sites like Eurogamer using proprietary movie players), so it's probably worth it for that.

I'm off to download. Lets see if I'm back in 15 minutes demanding my money back.
  • Pinky_Floyd #16 2 years ago

Bit expensive, will stick to the normal version for now. Unless you add in some boobs, then I'm all over it.
  • binky #17 2 years ago

I agree with "its JUST 2.39" but it's just over the price point of INSTA-BUY for that exact reason. I think that a "SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY OFFER" of a quid would get a few people on it straight away and then the good reviews would send it up the charts and get people paying the higher price.
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #18 2 years ago

    FAIL!

It doesn't show the editor's blog posts, so I can't actually respond to this article in the app. The first hurdle, Eurogamer, tsk tsk.

    I want my money back!
  • beastmaster #19 2 years ago

    Here we go again...
  • septimus #20 2 years ago

Bit cheeky really. Number of other sites offer similar functioned apps for free-£1.29.

I would get this at £1.29, but for some reason this just seems steep.

@AbracadaverAK : It is perceived value, not cost. I can attain little value for £2.39, you know, principle.
  • Vex #21 2 years ago

Another positive take for the guys who have put so much hard work behind this. I was initially expecting this to be free myself, but having stopped to think about it for a moment, I believe I will cough up a couple of quid for a faster (less bandwidth) add free experience, and the ability to watch EGTV. I spend enough time reading this site, so I think it's worth it.
  • Vroom #22 2 years ago

    Thanks for the comments guys!

Good point about the editors blog, sorry Tom :)

  • bad09 #24 2 years ago

I'm disgusted at the price I'd have to pay to use this app EG! Shocking price!

    / has no Iphone
  • penhalion #25 2 years ago

It always amazes me how people come up with good ideas and then do everything in their power to shoot themselves in the foot. 2.39 when nearly all other apps are at the pound or less mark is nonsense, no matter the reasoning behind it. It's especially silly when your own target audience has already told you they'd buy it at 59p - 1 pound no problem. Are you simply trying to join the activision bandwagon of pricing yourself above what you know people are willing to pay? The problem is that in this case there are no retailers willing to negate the price hike and take the hit for you.
  • Ornithophobe #26 2 years ago

"We're working on a general mobile version of the site"

Are you intending on this working with mobile Safari ?
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #27 2 years ago

The National Rail App is £5 and it gave me the wrong platform the other day and I almost missed the train. :)

[penhalion: Actually, the response in the forum when we announced it was that £2 is fair enough as a one-off fee for an ad-free site that will be improved over-time. We'll see how it goes.]
  • CaptainScarlet #28 2 years ago

99p maybe, 59p defo but it should still be free. How about a promotional code for all the registered sight users. I can buy quite a lot of good entertainment for that kind of cash on the app store and there are a lot of great web and social apps that are free that offer more services than this.

It's especially steep as on a 3G or Wireless network I can get on the site, surf and comment on it for no money already. If I want to watch a video I can probably live till I get to a desktop or even just youtube it (another installed and free app)

Poor show EG. way to fleece your regular fan base!!!

    ...or

To be honest I'd rather you stuck a few adverts on there and gave me it free. I don't find advertising offensive in anyway as long as it's not in you face. a lot of free apps do it and it's not to bad considering the free nature nature of the app. the let those that want to pay a premium for ad free version do it if they want too!

Wont be interested at the current price and unless we all refuse to get it then the price will not come down to something more reasonable!!

  • hilts #29 2 years ago

great effort guys, thought it would be cheaper too but really is it worth moaning about when you consider the price of some tat gaming magazines and the EGTV functionality
    Its a buy for me!

"This ad-free version should be free, after all you guys are running a charity!"

Frankly, I can understand why somebody think the price could be knocked down a bit, but not why it should be free (and without ads)
    Edited by 1 at 03/11/09 @ 11:19
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #31 2 years ago

£2.39 is less than (probably less than half) the price of a paper magazine, how's that for perspective.

    Now back to complaining:

    From the Dragon age Review:

    No captions for review screenshots?
No viewing the review screenshots in landscape mode? This applies to the Dementium gallery, too, it would seem.
What does 'tilt to zoom' mean? Tilting seems to have no effect.
There's no obvious platform associated with the screenshot gallery.
Or indeed the review, apart from the fact the article goes to lengths to say it's of the PC version.

Comment posting is really nice, but there's no Karma system :(

  • Vroom #32 2 years ago

  • Skurmedel #33 2 years ago

Just tried it, the EG TV-player is nice, but the compression could be scaled back a bit. Try looking at the Shattered Horizon trailer for example :)

Another thing, in the settings I can select what to filter on, but I can only "show all content" or one single category.
  • keano #34 2 years ago

people happily pay £2 for a portion of chips but for a phone app tht last longer than 10 grease filled minutes....its apparently a discrace :|
  • beckyh #35 2 years ago

It may only be £2.39 but it is a little pricey compared to other apps of similar content. I think if the price was only 99p Eurogamer would sell a lot more downloads and will make more profit in the long run.
  • CableNut #36 2 years ago

They put a big effort in to the big main eurogamer site, they don't charge us for that..
So why charge us for the iphone app..
I'm sure adds on the big main site and other eurogamer incomes could pay the dev for this app..
After all it's all in eurogamers best interest ;)
    Edited by 1 at 03/11/09 @ 11:32
  • CaptainScarlet #37 2 years ago

@keano - lol, comparisons of food and apps is funny. try living on apps alone mate.

However, I think that everyone on here making a complaint about the price has a very valid point based on the cost of other apps of this type. When compared it isn't favorable and doesn't do that much more than just surfing the actual site in the safari browser. What you are actually paying £2.39 for is an app that lets you play the trailers or egtv, everything else is already free via safari and unlimited web browsing :)
    Edited by 1 at 03/11/09 @ 11:38
  • Sniper_007 #38 2 years ago

ok... I was going to complain at the price, like many on here I expected a free app to broaden access to the site rather than a paid for extra!!

However, after watching the video on the forum I'm changing my opinion... it actually looks like a lot of time, thought and effort has gone into an app which re-formats the site in a way that is far easier (& faster) to use than simply using safari!! Plus since I end up spending most of my personal web time accessing the web through the phone rather than the laptop I'm in!!

Will report back later on whether I regret that decision ;-)
  • Toothball #39 2 years ago

Yeah I don't really get the fuss over paying a couple of pounds for this. It's such a trivial amount to begin with. I once gave someone a pound to hurry their friend up when I wanted a go on the demo terminal in a shop while the person in front of me was taking ages to enter their name onto a high score table. It sounds like this app may even be worth the money too.
    Edited by 1 at 03/11/09 @ 11:42
  • DFawkes #40 2 years ago

Given that Vroom, a fellow forumite, basically started this off his own back and it snowballed to full blown officialness,I have no problem rewarding him for all his efforts by paying up. it's not like anyone at EG decided they should start a moneymaking scheme, it's one man and his crusade to make EG an easier read on iPhone/iPod Touch.

There are updates on the way too, hidden easter eggs, the ability to read stuff without a net connection & EG TV is great over wifi. I've already used it a whole bunch, and think it was worth every penny :)

I do appreciate some may prefer using good ol' Safari for the fuller experience, and I'm sure I'll still use that too sometimes, but for my general dya-to-day forum browsing I'll be using the App.
  • beckyh #41 2 years ago

LOLs I think someone has got confused - review number 2 for this app on the store... "Its one of the best games of the past 10 years possibly ever. why anybody would choose to play it with pop in, aliasing and dodgy load times just because of the promise of DLC at some point in the future is beyond me".
  • Vroom #42 2 years ago

That review is Owens. Bless him :)
  • Skurmedel #43 2 years ago

It's definitely quicker than trying to view the site in Safari.
  • MENTAL1ST Verified Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #44 2 years ago

    Tilt the other way ;)

    Oh for christ's sake!

Perhaps they should fix it so that you tilt in the same direction for screenshots as for videos?
A bit of pinch-zoom, since we're mostly viewing images of a far higher resolution than the iphone's screen might be nice, too.

Edit: sorry, Vroom, I do like the app. I should probably head to the forum to discuss all this properly, rather than railing at you.

Costs less than a chips and beans and a bottle of coke from my Uni shop, so consider it part of my healthy eating regime.

Given it a go and seems to be rather good, the EGTV is probably the best part of it for me, not to mention the occasional chuckle you get from reading the forums while on the train / bus / horse and cart etc

    Liking it so far :)

No ads plus video = well worth the asking. Some of you guys are so tight it's untrue.
  • istandfreed #59 2 years ago

Attention all ye naysayers, let us have a manly discussion.

The EG app is only 2 quid. Yes, that's right £2. What else costs £2?
Sandwiches, coffee, porn videos in one of those booths. The app costs £2 because there are no ads, it actually costs EG money to stream videos, since there are no ads in the app, you can do the math. It also allows the app to run quicker.

EG is also not a charity, you can sign up for the site for free and you do it on your own volition, purely your own choice, so is buying this app. You do not have to buy it to enjoy EG, you do not even have to buy the app if you want to access EG on the i-phone but if you want that access in a properly i-phone friendly, formatted environment, which somebody had to spent time and effort upon to create, then you can, by paying the tiny sum of £2.

  • Lee_Morris #60 2 years ago

How dare you try charge me to view a version of the website that doesn't have any sparkly ads trying to distract me. I do believe in this day and age you should be stumping up the bill to run and maintain this version of the site. I have rights to have everything for free goddamit.
  • GamesConnoisseur #61 2 years ago

I often use iPhone to surf and post on EG actually! So which may explains tedency for my slipping in occasional text speaks. u instead of you as typing on mobile phone is habit forming.

Would have wished to see it a bit cheaper but for without ad, you cant have it both ways. So a purchase for me.

When you say general mobile version, what do you mean?

I only ask because I have been working on an Android version similar to the iPhone version for a while now and do not wish to waste my time if you are releasing an official Android app. My app currently consists of an app in the same vein as the iPhone one plus a news feed widget which can be placed on the homescreen of any Android phone and updates with new feed items as and when the rss is updated.

Actually, I may still release it when it is finished for the hell of it ;)

I demand an EG with more Blackjack and hookers!
  • Moggo #77 2 years ago

At first I was quite surprised at the asking price. In Australia its equivalent to 5 dollars, which is approaching, if not smashing against, the price-wall for iPhone apps.

But in a show of goodwill I'll buy it as a way to say thanks.

You may have a hard time convincing most people to pay that much, however.
  • David_W #78 2 years ago

Wow, it's really easy to call someone out as a tight f$$k for thinking this app is a bit too pricey. But the thing is the AppStore is loaded with affordable apps, but it all adds up fast. Thus you have to be a bit picky about what to get also affordable doesn't neccesary equate to good value.

So, what would I get out of the app? Well safari mobile already does an excellent job displaying EG. I barely notice the adds as a simple double tap line ups the articles perfectly to the screen. So what's left, EG tv, which I font really miss on the go and the sleeker look of a dedicated app.

Tbh, even if the price is too high for an instant buy, I'll probably get it at some point, but in no way is this app a must buy. Safari is simply doing too good of a job.

I'm doubt that the minuses being flung around here really origin from iPhone owners.

Edit: wrote this using my iPhone, standing on the tube during rush hour so excuse my spelling/grammer logical loops.

Ok caved and bought it. I realise it's going to be developed but it's pretty damn feature light isn't it?

    * Doesn't seem to like comment threads over 50 comments long - at least on reviews (Halo ODST only had 50 comments, Uncharted 2 claims to have none)
    * No search facility - kind of silly that a Games Site App does not even allow you to look for a particular review no? That's feature number one surely?
    * No Eurogamers like facility
    * No restriction of Forum stuff making that pretty useless unless what you are looking for has been commented on recently.
  • MightyMouse #81 2 years ago

Hmmm interesting one. I'll probably get it just for the video and to avoid the annoyance of resizing everything in safari.

edit: damn lack of flash on iphones, easily the most annoying thing about em.

Oh yeah, it downloads the last 50 articles for off-line reading too so if you are on the underground - like I was today - you can keep reading without an internet connection. Safari doesn't do that either.
  • jonsaan #84 2 years ago

Browsing EG using safari on an iphone is awful.
  • PrivateJoker #85 2 years ago

Who are the idiots marking down people who are moaning about the price of this?

Of course they should moan. IGN has a app that lets you access and filter their reviews and has guides etc and best of all it is free.

Eurogamer is full of shit anyway, so they won't be getting a penny out of me.

    Let the negatives begin :-P

No one's getting all that worked up. Just pointing out that paying £2.39 for something that an iPhone user can get for free by moving their thumb an inch is a lot to ask.

Eurogamer once again proving that they don't get the whole iPhone thing.
  • PrivateFloyd #91 2 years ago

    Vroom,

i have bought it, it is fantastic and have been following the development of it all closely. It is SUPERB!

My hat goes off to you sir, this will really be my most used app by a mile.

I cannot believe people are whinging about what is effectively the same price as a pint of lager.
  • Fleeby #92 2 years ago

    @PrivateJoker

But IGN is absolute crap with illiterate articles. But I assume you're having a private joke to yourself on us, yes?
  • istandfreed #93 2 years ago

EarlBassett, you said on the previous comments page that Safari is fine for accessing EG on the i-phone. I fail to understand why you're being so vehement towards this app. Clearly you don't need the app in the first place so why is price such an issue for you?

Not everything on the internet can be free.

'But IGN is absolute crap with illiterate articles.'

You could cut out IGN and paste in Eurogamer equally with that statement. I agree IGN isn't great, in fact I don't take any notice of many game sites these days. This is the first time in ages I've actually been arsed to comment on anything. Usually I just roll my eyes and move on.
  • paul_haine #95 2 years ago

I heart offline browsing mode. Useful for the London Underground and toilets in faraway places.
  • George-Roper #96 2 years ago

One of the best apps ive bought to date and worth all two quid odd paid.
  • Skurmedel #97 2 years ago

If it was a slap, it sure felt warm.
  • lucky_jim #98 2 years ago

Brillant app, and well worth the money. I can't understand why people are bitching- it's considerably less than a pint here in central London, ffs. And it's a one-off payment. And it took Vroom a lot of hard work to develop. I wouldn't have baulked at a fiver, tbh.
  • istandfreed #99 2 years ago

@EarlBassett. Reread the comments, you'll find the vast majority of loyal readers find it's well worth the pittance cost, me included.
  • Lovemoose #100 2 years ago

It's surprising how so many people who participate in what is, nowadays, a fairly expensive hobby carp about paying two quid for something that a volunteer - one of us no less - has made.

Why do you even bother posting if it's too expensive? You can earn £2.39 in less time than it takes to post your ill-conceived "it's more expensive than asian babes so I'm not paying for it" rants.

I've said it in the forum thread and I'll say it again here. Vroom's done a really good job, and EG as whole deserve praise for the very fact that there's enough content to fill up the app in the first place.

I was initially a bit surprised at the price, but in the end stumped up after I realised just how much use I'd get out of it. £2 really isn't that much for the ease of use it offers.

And anyone who says it should be free with ad support - get used to paying for content. I can't see the free website with ads model lasting forever...
  • Mercatoria #102 2 years ago

    What about android?
  • paul_haine #103 2 years ago

"You can earn £2.39 in less time than it takes to post your ill-conceived "it's more expensive than asian babes so I'm not paying for it" rants. "

You have to bear in mind that most of those complaining have only just got their first paper round.
  • secombe #104 2 years ago

I think people who are saying that people shouldn't moan about £2.39 are missing the point a bit, this hit the nail on the head for me...

When I just rushed to download it, I expected it to be free, or 60p at worst. The fact it's £2.39 has given me pause, and i'm a massive EG fan and spend money on apps like it's going out of fashion - so there's little to no chance of winning over someone who isnt a big fan of the site already.

Sure £2 is nothing in the grand scheme of things, but £2.39 is firmly in 'premium app' territory, that much is a fact. It may not sound much to an outsider, but compared to most things on the App Store it is expensive.

I should conclude this by saying that yes I will buy it...with the nagging doubt that they will soon realise it's too expensive to have any kind of market penetration, and then cut the price in half.
  • George-Roper #105 2 years ago

Yeah but compared to most things on the app store at least this is somewhat useful and improves the user experience, in context.

I can't begin to describe the amount of 'premium' shit that you actually need to wade through before finding something worthwhile. This is definitely worthwhile.
  • OverWind #106 2 years ago

    Bought! :)

It seems very nice, and I look forward to using it on the bus on the way to work.
And I think the price is fine. It would probably sell more if the price were a bit lower, but I guess the price leaves room for a limited-time-discount campaign sometime :D

    £2.39 LMAO

    should be free ffs!
    Waste of time
  • Ashcroft #111 2 years ago

I already browse the site ad-free with Vanilla Surf, which I got for free a while ago. Certainly not paying to access the site when I can already access it for free. I could get 4 games on the iPhone for that price.
  • Fleeby #112 2 years ago

    @PrivateJoker

If you can't tell the difference between Eurogamer's sharp prose and IGN's rambling and unfocused garbage, then that is genuinely odd. Are you sure you're not having a laugh?

Incidentally, this article on pricing strategies on the App store makes for some interesting reading.

It does make for interesting reading. However I'd argue that there is a third App store, above A, lets call it AAA where more expensive, heavily-promoted apps and games from major manufacturors live. This is the app store equivalent of boxed product for other systems, the domain of several-quid games like Tiger Woods, Civilisation, Doom Resurrection, Monkey Island, and high-profile serious apps like QuickOffice, and at the extreme level the £60 a throw TomTom app.

Edit: boxed product not shelved product, doh.

Looks nice, but I'm not going to pay for an app that lets me access free content.
  • Lovemoose #115 2 years ago

Note to whiners: the content you're asking for for free, has to be paid for somehow. Ads, app costs, whatever, it's not free for EG to provide this, so the money has to come from somewhere.

If EG couldn't afford to carry on because all you whinging idiots blocked ads or demanded free apps, I'd be gutted.

But there'd be a tiny, gleaming silver lining to the black cloud of EG's departure. Want to know what'd it be?

I'd never have to listen to you bunch of whining cunts ever again.

Does this app require the 3.0 OS update? If so, it's both more than £2.39 and would also make me take a step I don't want to take on my Touch which works fine with version 2 right now.

If it's compatible with version 2, then I'll give it a go.
  • Lovemoose #117 2 years ago

EB, do you consider the price of a magazine or newspaper to be "exploitation of loyal readers"?
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #118 2 years ago

Ashcroft: You could, but I could argue that the EG app is the only one that will still be used (and updated with new features) in a year's (or even a month's or week's) time.

EarlBassett: Not really - the day before the iPhone app came out, you were happily browsing via a web browser. If you didn't buy the app, nothing in your life has changed. Those who have bought it, on the whole, have enjoyed the new features.

    Wendelius: 3.0 only I'm afraid.
  • onezeonx #119 2 years ago

funny how ANY bad comment taking about price get - straight away lol

FACT is other apps do the SAME thing as this app.....for FREE

i can just about understand 59p charge or even 99p......but anymore is pointless
so say im a cheap skate fucker but i aint paying

and i promise i earn more than most in here! but i aint pying for something i can get for free :p

  • BartonFink #121 2 years ago

Don't mind paying for the App but as mentioned earlier Apple really take the piss having to pay for updates at €4. Still cannot understand how they get away with it.

nice. i use the giantbomb app all the time. £2.39 is great value considering the content you have access to.
  • Nick #125 2 years ago

@EarlBassett The IGN app has a permanent horizontal ad banner at the bottom of the page. Which explains how they are funding their free app.

  • DrDamn #126 2 years ago

    @MrED209
I thought it was very important to post a *constructive* review on the AppStore - what's the problem with that? The reviews that were there are currently a EG-forumite love-in and it needed a little perspective as the App doesn't actually do several things the description implies. In my review I pointed out what it was good at and what it wasn't. This wasn't clear from the App description so I'm entitled to score it how I find it no?

NB: As features get added and fixed then I will update my review. As it stands I'm trying to be constructive and put info on the AppStore for other buyers. I also went to the discussion thread but it's 30 odd pages long - how was I meant to know it had all been discussed and planned?

It costs Eurogamer approximately 10p per gigabyte of video served.

So this app can quickly cost us more in bandwidth than it cost you to buy.

    Everyone's a loser :)

  • actionfitz #128 2 years ago

when I saw the article I rushed to the appstore on my iphone to have a look.
Not to belittle the work that went into the app - I work for a small company preparing our first iphone game-
but the £2.39 price point is just north of my comfort zone. 99p would have been an insta buy.
I'll watch for price drops, if only for the feature of being able to watch game trailers in bed on nights with bad insomnia :)
anyway kudos for the work, will maybe be a purchase later on down the line.
  • DrDamn #129 2 years ago

    @MrED209
It only came out yesterday. Rather than trawl through a 35 page thread discussing the development I thought that the priority was to let other potential buyers know about the shortcomings of the App - both in this thread and the AppStore. There wasn't any other source of this info. Given the reviews you'd think it was all singing all dancing.

It is a lot to do with how I use EG. As you've obviously checked you'll notice a lot of my forum comments are in the Photography section - threads which maybe go a couple of days without update - so the app is poor for that. I also wanted to use the app as a reference to reviews. Out and about see a game cheap - can't remember whether the reviews were good or not - if it's not a recent game then the App is poor for that too. So I gave it 2 stars as not just because these things are not available - but the product description is misleading about these features. It's an opinion.

I'm not convinced I'm the one chucking the Mardy Fit here.
  • Vroom #130 2 years ago

    @DrDamn

Greetings. You are certainly entitled to your opinions. You are entitled to, and should, voice them. This is a comments thread after all.

Thank you for purchasing and taking the time to review the app (Thank you all actually). The fact that you gave it 2 stars is merely an aside. If that's the level of satisfaction you got for your £2.49 then fair enough.

The criticism you have is valid (Not sure about the description being inaccurate however). Most all of the items you mentioned I am currently working on or will endeavor to work on soon. I hope you'll revisit the review then.

"Feedback is the breakfast of champions" ;)

I think this is a great idea and will definitely buy it as soon as my bank balance recovers from Christmas.
  • DrDamn #132 2 years ago

    @MrED209
The point is that I planned to visit it and post the same there but didn't have the time to work through the thread to check the relevancy of my comments. Not that I never planned to. There was relevancy to posting here and in the AppStore as not everyone is going to go to the large forum thread and the issues had not been raised in these places.

    @Vroom
No problem. Specifically on the product description. It states you can customise what you see - when this is not true for Forum use. The lack of search makes what you access very much the current EG content. Which is fine, but not clear from the product description.
  • elephant_stone #133 2 years ago

awwwww what! I have to pay?!
  • jamespo #134 2 years ago

Nice app, considering I use adblock on the EG site I don't mind contributing.
  • Fleeby #135 2 years ago

Got no problem with the price. BUT EG needs to start doing more iPhone game reviews to make it truly worthwhile.

  • rprince #138 2 years ago

I don't really understand why a lot of websites are writing custom applications to serve their websites on iPhone. Why not just write a mobile compatible version of the website? It must be easier. In some cases it can be as easy as rejigging the CSS.

I'd much prefer a mobile version of the site with ads than pay £2.39 for an app.
  • superdelphinus #139 2 years ago

i'm sure the eurogamer population didn't use to be this childish. Or have I just got old and and the other older ones have left?
  • DrDamn #140 2 years ago

A little sensible discussion on the pricing. There is an argument that by putting out an app like this EG encourages more people to use the full site and they gain hits through that route. There is also danger that by not providing an app like this they will lose readership to the sites that do. It would have been nice if it could have been done as a free App with some sponsored low bandwidth links in articles. E.g. a short text link to more extensive information on a game or to ShopTo in order to buy/pre-order a title.

    RE: Apps vs. Mobile site

I think it was a MS spokesperson who criticised the AppStore for largely being a collection of front-ends to normal web content. What they missed was that when done well this can be a very good thing. Presentation can be tailored and look and feel matched to the Phone OS. Info can be cached for offline reading and data gathered from a multitude of sources into one simple interface. A mobile site should still be a consideration as it is more universally applicable, but the value of a well designed and though out app is greater.
