Eurogamer iPhone app v3 live!

Full changelog and shots within.

'Eurogamer iPhone app v3 live!' Screenshot 1

Eurogamer is awesomely happy to announce that version three of the Eurogamer iPhone application is now available on the iTunes App Store.

V3 features numerous interface improvements across the board, allowing you to email links within the app, use Facebook share, check out images in articles and catch up on entire comment threads for features.

On the forum there's also a fancy new "Watch thread" function, thanks to which the application can inform you when someone posts in a thread, and there's also a better viewer for the forum in general so you can see more at once.

Our wonderful iPhone app developer Shane McCafferty (EGVroom on Twitter) has also squashed tons of bugs and invites us to try and find a new Easter egg.

Not content with that, you can also turn the iPhone left or right to reorientate for landscape images. Revolutionary.

You can buy the Eurogamer iPhone application on iTunes for £2.39. Check out the Eurogamer iPhone app screenshot gallery to see how v3 looks in action.

    Good grief

    <a href=http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/eurogamer/id335241576?mt =8>iTunes Catalogue web page</a>

'Frequent/Intense Realistic Violence'? I see the iTunes reviewers know the forum well.

    jonbwfc, 2 things!

1 - Yip there's some crazy violent stuff in there!

2- I didn't know you could link to app descriptions like that. Thanks.

    FOURTH!!!

    Ironic mode off

I deleted the first version as just glorified rss reader but will give the new v3 a try.
  • Ryboy #5 2 years ago

Bit pricey. Why is it not free?
  • frosin #6 2 years ago

Pocket Gamers app are free, why not Eurogamers?
  • Odessa #7 2 years ago

Are the updates included in the price? Or costs every version extra?
  • moggsy #8 2 years ago

I can't believe people are bitching about the £2.39 cost. Do you know how much effort goes into developing something like this?

It's an excellent app and well worth the couple of quid it costs.
  • Flying_Pig #9 2 years ago

V3 is a big improvement on the originals, and well worth updating the App.

Easily worth the modest £2.39 considering the hours and efforts that Vroom! (and his trusty Beta testers) have put into this.

    Love it!
  • CaptainScarlet #10 2 years ago

I just downloaded a cool little 3D modeling and render App call itracer. It does cool 3D modeling, rendering and saves files out for 3DS Max. Now THAT is an app!

Oh, it was also cheaper than Eurogamers app!
  • Vroom #11 2 years ago

    Updates are, of course free.

You don't want to pay 2 quid for it people, don't.

A lot of work goes into the app.
  • Tricky #12 2 years ago

Bloody skinflints. If you're happy reading EG in Safari then go for it - personally I hate doing that. The EG app is so much nicer to use.
  • Apostle #13 2 years ago

Love this app! Worth every penny!
  • peterfll #14 2 years ago

Keep those revisions coming. Great app.

ps Proper content filtering perhaps in the next version i.e. selecting more than one platform to fliter on?
  • Odessa #15 2 years ago

Maybe you can include other sites to like eurogamer.de as i am checking both sites all the time (and germany has many customers too -> more money for you ;-))
  • insincere_dave #16 2 years ago

Whilst I don't begrudge you trying to recoup the development costs, you're still charging the same price as the Guardian App which must have at least 100x the content you provide. Stick it up for 59p and you'll end up making loads more money.

To continue the comparison, The Guardian, manage to have an excellent mobile site as well as their app. Conversely, Eurogamer seems completely unoptimised for mobile which suggests this is a ploy to sell your app. Or maybe I'm seeing conspiracies where none exist.

Will groups be available one day? I have the app, but I'm finding 90% of my visits to EG on my iPhone are actually via Safari.
  • robrymond #18 2 years ago

Console Monster manage a cheap application that works very well, only 59p for Pro or free for Lite. Seems a bit expensive this really, despite development costs!
  • Aloominum_man #19 2 years ago

Compelling value-based complaints from posters who, amongst other things, admit to having bought Driv3r.
  • Jesus: Action Figure #20 2 years ago

Plenty of value. Thanks for making this.

  • Psiloc #21 2 years ago

£2.39 is fuck all. Love it.

EDIT: To clarify, I do actually think the price is a bit off and that they'd do better all in all if it were lower, but those who are clearly already interested in the app yet won't buy it because it's 2-FUCKING-59 must be dreadful people to know in real life.

  • Psiloc #22 2 years ago

I know this isn't the place for this, but I've just noticed that reviews etc. don't seem to mention which platform they are relevant to.

@insincere_dave - ' Conversely, Eurogamer seems completely unoptimised for mobile which suggests this is a ploy to sell your app. Or maybe I'm seeing conspiracies where none exist.'

Yes, You are. A famous old saying is : 'never assume malice where incompetence is a viable explanation'. It seems much more likely to me that EG simply haven't got round to doing a mobile-optimised site yet.

    £2.39?

Question. What can this app do that the iPhone web browser cannot?

Edit: and is there anything it cannot do that a web browser can?

Have they changed the forum part of the app which annoyingly automatically took the user to the last page of every thread without the option to go straight the first post?
  • moggsy #28 2 years ago

    @ kangarootoo

Why not just buy it and find out for yourself? The cost of entry is really not that high now is it?
  • AllenSpawn #29 2 years ago

    love the app.
much quicker than the safari browser.....but a couple of points:

no mention of format on reviews can be confusing and it would be nice to see neg/pos voting on comments
  • kangarootoo #30 2 years ago

    @moggsy

So instead of people who have used the app explaining what it can and can't do, I should buy it myself to find out whether it is worth the money I will have already spent?

    Umm, no thanks.

It might well be a great app, but on the face of it, compared to other similar apps out there, the price seems odd. If all it does is present the website in an iPhone friendly format, I would expect to pay 59p for it (I actually assumed it would be free on reading the headline).
  • moggsy #31 2 years ago

    @ kangarootoo

Christ! It's less than a cost of a pint of beer. What are you fretting about?
  • kangarootoo #32 2 years ago

    @moggsy

I've got a used tissue in my pocket. I'll sell it to you for the price of a pint of beer.

One of seems to be fretting. I'm not sure its me.
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #33 2 years ago

"Question. What can this app do that the iPhone web browser cannot?"

EGTV is the main thing - every video (trailers + original content) is on there. Offline viewing of articles is another. And it loads faster. And there's no ads. And you can share links on twitter. And the font is easier to read as it is natively formatted for the iPhone.
  • markypants #34 2 years ago

As much as I hate the usual moaners about these things, for once I do agree that the cost is too high. I think you'd easily clean up at the 59p price point. At £2.39 it is easier just to use the web browser - even though not as convenient.

Have you tried it on 'sale' for a limited period to see whether you get a boost in sales?

  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #35 2 years ago

"It seems much more likely to me that EG simply haven't got round to doing a mobile-optimised site yet."

Our mobile site is available at http://www.eurogamer.net/ m/
  • kangarootoo #36 2 years ago

    @rauper

"every video (trailers + original content) is on there. Offline viewing of articles is another. And it loads faster. And there's no ads."

Thankyou. This is all I'm asking for, something on which to base a decision.

Offline viewing is a win, no ads is another win (and from a business point of view, the most tangible reason to charge for it). Twitter isn't for me, though I'm in the minority there I'm sure. And readable fonts should come for free imo :)

So overall it sounds like a decent package, suited to the platform. I still think the price is a little misjudged, and that you might turn a higher profit if you priced it at £1.50 (I'd buy it at that price for no ads and offline reading/viewing).... but then I'm no expert and I'm sure some homework has been done.

These comments pages here are so CORRUPT! it shocking lol

Anywhooooo £2.39 is simply to much for this app!
The standard £1.19(i think it is) is fair enough but no way will i pay £2.39 for sometinh i get for free over wifi/3g
  • insincere_dave #38 2 years ago

Apologies for my conspiracy theorising! I'm using the mobile site now on my iPhone and it's a big improvement. So much so that I don't really see the point in the app at all now.
  • moggsy #39 2 years ago

    @ kangarootoo

If it takes you this long to weigh up your options when spending a couple of quid how long would it take you to weigh up buying a car or a house? I suspect the time will be measured in multiples of decades...
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #40 2 years ago

One of the lovely guys on the forum is working on an Android app at the moment...
  • kangarootoo #41 2 years ago

    @moggsy

Yes, multiples of decades. 0.00002 x 1 decade perhaps.
  • Crazyreyn #42 2 years ago

If it adds to anything, I'll be jumping on his app once the price drops. I'm sure it's worth the current price, but it still feels a little steep, that's all.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #43 2 years ago

I know there is no money in this but I'd prefer to improve the mobile site. I'm just not a big fan of today's phonemakers business on how to make money (ie. cripple the browser and sell the lost features as applications).
  • Vroom #44 2 years ago

    Ta rauper.

    As pointed out this:

"EGTV is the main thing - every video (trailers + original content) is on there. Offline viewing of articles is another. And it loads faster. And there's no ads. And you can share links on twitter. And the font is easier to read as it is natively formatted for the iPhone."

..is what you get for your 2 quid. Plus I am continuing to work with EG so each iteration of the app is better than the last.

If this is not worth 2 quid to you then that's perfectly fine. App is not for you. Surely there's better things to complain about?
  • bushwod #45 2 years ago

Love the app. Use it every day on the underground so I can read Eurogamer even without a network signal.

Well worth the price of 1/2 a pint.
  • mukki #46 2 years ago

    1st thought great!

but why does the thing cost money?

will wait for the light/free version with only wii reviews and news... :/

    bu huhuh
  • HoriZon #47 2 years ago

There is no lite/free (not one planned either i think?) version and tbh its £2.39!!

As for all the complainers out there god grow up if you cant afford it dont buy it.
For what it is, it works great and simple to use no zooming in and videos on the go. As for the mobile site yeah its OK too but more limited than the app with no videos and no editing or quoting of your posts.

As for groups and such they are coming.

    Top marks Vroom and EG!!

Man that would be awful say its a thread with 2000 pages! starting at the end is best!

But having the option on the thread once its loaded would be a good idea.

My most used iPhone app. Look forward to checking out v3 improvements tonight.
  • varsas #50 2 years ago

Is there an offline setting now? It's a bit annoying when one knows the signal is crap and one has to wait for the app to discover this before the offline content is available to read.

@onezeonx: Unfortunately it's not possible to access EG via wifi/3g on the Tube or other areas with bad coverage. The offline feature is the main reason I bought the app.

@mukki: There are no adverts and it costs time and effort to make.

LOL ah ok this explains you ass licking on most of the "hot" issues on eurogamer.

Now we know your biased it explains alot of things

    HA!
  • Stiggy #53 2 years ago

Sorry but Apple has conditioned me to 59p an app. I may have a comfortable life with disposable income but they have set my expectation of what I consider reasonable and as a Apple iPhone user, I have lost the ability to think for myself.

Therefore I will hold until the price reduces.
  • deli2000 #54 2 years ago

    @earlbasset
ha. you amuse me. your inability to read and comprehend posts is baffling. if you think that's expensive then think about the £300 or so quid to get an iphone.

your main argument is "2.39 for repackaging content I get for free makes absolutely no sense". There is a reason for that. firstly, NO ADS! Secondly, OFFLINE MODE! Thirdly EGTV! now if you can do all that for only £2.39 when a crappy monopoly game costs 3 QUID! then i think it is a tiny bit of value for money. but if you still disagree, that is your opinion. and i hope you go on your "value for money" computer and prove me wrong.

Back on topic. I think this is an fantastic app that is a good alternative to its mobile sites (not a big fan of them myself) and i think the offline mode is an excellent idea.

    /breathe
  • Lawlost #55 2 years ago

At £2.39 I'll pass. Yep watching the pennies, some of you obviously have a lot more disposable income than others.

  • Skurmedel #58 2 years ago

I take the middle road, good value is a individual thing. I found it good value, maybe somebody else won't. I buy it, they don't. I think the price is on that fine line where neither one is right :)
  • Bruce_One #59 2 years ago

I've been reading Eurogamer since they first launched; the content is so good that I've not felt the need to buy a gaming magazine in years. Have you seen the prices of those? You would be very lucky with most if you had change from a fiver. The app costs nothing in comparison to the money I've saved over the years and the money I continue to save.

We should be supporting these guys. The app costs nothing in the grand scheme.
  • Rodchenko #60 2 years ago

    £2.39?
Dude, that's like the PS3 of apps. Gotta wait for that price drop ;)
  • alcides #61 2 years ago

ranting contests are useless, they have Rob Fahey on their side!!! I mean, even Gamesindustry need registration to be able to READ it via a browser. How does that translate into portability, I wonder? Somehow I don't see a future where all websites need your e-mail or cash or whatever silly pre-requisite. It's actually a BLESSING to have eyes skimming your lines. Why put shutters on your TV set? EG?
  • Sorb #62 2 years ago

You know if I had to pay 28 SEK for every app I downloaded then my iPhone would be rather empty. With apps from Engadget, IGN and the like for free I don't see why I should pay for the Eurogamer app. However the super secret mobile page that Rauper linked to seems like a good option, I have added that to my Home Screen instead.
  • varsas #63 2 years ago

@Sorb: It's hardly a secret when it's on the front page.
  • mrpon #64 2 years ago

Great app love it, it's on my hotbar. I get my apps for free anyway with redeemable Nectar points on iTunes cards. Anyone else mentioning cost as an issue after my post is clearly an idiot.
  • el_pollo_diablo #65 2 years ago

Given that this website is free I don't have a problem paying £2.40. I have, after all, never clicked on a single banner ad.

Anyway, has anyone found any easter eggs?
  • arork #66 2 years ago

    I really like the app.
But I would love to have multiple choice in filter, like seeing PS3+XBOX360+PSP news only.
  • bluem4gic #67 2 years ago

When you make it free i ill get it
  • Vroom #68 2 years ago

Shake your phone like a madman while reading an article for a classic Eurogamer moment ;)
  • MasterNameless #69 2 years ago

It's hilarious people are cheap enough to complain about a £2 price tag. Just shows how much so many gamers love to complain just for the sake of it.
  • butler` #70 2 years ago

MEN YU MOAN ABOUT £2.39 WUT CAR MUST YOU DRIVE LOL!?

It's still too expensive for what it is IMO, especially compared to other, similar offerings.
  • spookyzombie #71 2 years ago

I bought it and it's a fantastic app. It's about half the price of Games TM magazine. I'm not too sure how people can complain at the price.
  • skuzzbag #72 2 years ago

    @EarlBassett

Just because someone can afford £2.39 suddenly means they have a PS3, a Wii and a 360 and all the games catalogue.

I can only assume that they also have the following.

    A 10 bedroom house London.
    A 100 foot yaught.
    An island in the Bahamas.
Majority shares in several large oil companies.

I for one wished these materialistic people wouldn't ruin everyone elses enjoyment of the forum by pushing the price of the EG iPhone application up to the £2.39 mark.
  • stampax #73 2 years ago

Mega lol at all the time saying they'll buy if the app drops by 50p or a pound. How poor are you guys!!!!! A couple of people also said that it's annoying when a site is crippled when surfing on the browser to ensure you'll buy the app instead. I think thats very harsh as the eurogamer site works brilliantly in a browser too.

Love the app, it's excellent, and really appreicate how much work goes into it and how much you update it.
  • peterfll #74 2 years ago

I was thinking about this and had some more thoughts to share:

Quite a lot of people spend 99p - £3.99 for an extra multiplayer level, or a new character skin, or a premium theme for the console etc. Quite happily.
There's a high ratio of crap that you can buy for 59p on the App Store.
The Guardian is owned by a rather larger private company (Gurdian Media Group) with large resources. They have produced a great 59p application no doubt. But not every publisher out their has their resources and can compete on a like for like basis on price.

    That's all for now.
  • Ryboy #75 2 years ago

    @ Vroom!

In the settings, would it not make more sense to touch the filters that you DON'T want? For example, if I want to see everything except for Wii, I just un-tick Wii, and that's that taken care of.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #76 2 years ago

My problem with the price - and this is something I've had with GTA too - is whilst it's not that much, relatively speaking, I tend to buy gift cards, so as I have about six quid left at the minute, I think of it in terms of "when that runs out I'll have to spend another £15 or £20 next time I want something..."

Same thing with XBLA, although that's a touch more sensible as buying a card is cheaper than just buying the points.

Anyway, it's all relative and I'm sure I'll end up buying the EG app sooner or later. It does look very good.

Edit: In fact, I'm probably not gonna buy another game for a while so I think I might just buy this tonight. I do go on EG with my iPhone usually every day, and it is irritating to use via Safari.
    Edited by 1 at 10/02/10 @ 16:16
  • Vroom #77 2 years ago

@Britesparc - Let me know how you get on, what you think.

@Ryboy - The way I get content at present doesn't facilitate this. This will change however. ;)
  • Ryboy #78 2 years ago

    Ok dude,

I love it by the way. Good stuff!
  • FreakyZoid #79 2 years ago

    >Surely there's better things to complain about?

Is a bit rich considering this is a review site. EG would be sure to lambast a videogame they felt was overpriced.
  • Vroom #80 2 years ago

    @EarlBassett

You're Jack Black in High Fidelity aren't you? ;)
  • quantumsheep #81 2 years ago

    @Vroom

Continue to enjoy the app, and it's invaluable for just getting the latest stories off EG to read on the tube in the morning/on the way home.

Thanks - I know how much work goes into these things!

Also - great easter egg with the 'shake while reading an article' - very EG, and indicative of the care that's gone into this! Nice one :)
  • smelly #82 2 years ago

    >As for all the complainers out there..

Right.. hold it right there. You'd have no issues if it was EG doing a review about a game and said it was too expensive/not worth the money would you?
  • fknetwork #83 2 years ago

I got my Touch 32gb last week and absolutely LOVE IT!
I bought the Eurogamer app last week, been using it everyday, I then get a pop up telling me an update is available to download, very smart! the new version is even better!

Anyone that doesn't have this app, it really is superb and well worth the money, if your a regular on eurogamer you MUST buy it!

So far i'm loving the iphone/touch, sooo many good games and apps for it, how such a small device can do so much is amazing, but the fingerprints are well annoying and the back of my touch has already got very scratched (new case isn't here yet).
  • marty_k #84 2 years ago

I don't know how the price of two tube tickets is not reasonable for such a great app. Sure, you can get the same content for free but I see buying this app as a way to say "good work, lads" to the EG team.

£2.39 is beyond my iphone impulse buy price of £1.
not going to comment on the quality of the app, im sure it took / takes hard work.
just wonder why its exactly 2.39 instead of a round figure.
  • clockworkzombie #87 2 years ago

@kangarootoo post # 29 "That makes no sense at all. Not even a bit. An employer is not a customer. Someone buying this app is a customer, and so will naturally expect good value for what they buy."

You are absolutely incorrect. An employer IS a customer. They buy your services, and will certainly want to make a profit from these services. If they do not make a profit then you get the boot and have to sell your services elsewhere.

Remember. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Costs will always have to be paid by someone.
  • madmac50k #88 2 years ago

Looks a nice app, but for the same content I can get free on the web. Sry but 59p is my app price limit....
  • ps3owner #89 2 years ago

ppl who own iphones and complain about app prices are a mystery to me... considering the cost of owning one. it's Apple's business to lock down everything there is to lock down and sell it in small pieces to all of their sheep.

why do you think there is no flash support. if there was, there'd be 0 point in having an app store in the first place. sadly everyone seems to be going down this app store shite route. but hey, they have to make money out of the web somehow.

N900, try that... obvioulsy you still don't have the luxury of offline vids. but I am sure some other stuff can be downloaded to that device and watched offline anyway
