Euro UT3 PS3 iffy for 2007

Mark Rein doubts it'll happen.

Epic Games' Mark Rein says that he hopes Unreal Tournament 3 will be released on PlayStation 3 this year but he doesn't think it will make it to Europe until 2008.

"Right now we're very close to a release candidate, and we should have it finished by the end of this week," he told Eurogamer at an event in Birmingham yesterday. "Then we send it off and it's just a matter of what happens from there."

"We think there's a very solid shot we'll get out this year - I don't know about Europe. Europe's a problem because the certification process in Europe takes longer.

"They're testing all these different languages in all these different countries, so I doubt it'll be released this year in Europe. But I don't know. We'll have to cross our fingers and wait and see."

However, he reckons the PS3 version is "really solid".

"Go play the game!" he ordered. "This build is really solid. On the test we ran on this build there were an amazingly small number of issues. We were surprised at how few issues there were."

I hear germany want the ragdoll effects and shooting dead bodies taken out so it definately won't appear there until 2008.

    import order done!

Brilliant news that its basically finished. The had gameplay footage from the PS3 version on "on the spot" last night and it looked awsome.

    Can't wait!!

I wondered what version they were showing last night, so didn't stay up to watch it. Seeing as you've confirmed it's PS3, I'm giving the show a look. It's telling, I think, that they've gone from "PS3 version in 2008" to "Euro version in 2008. Maybe." so quickly. I think they'll be able to get it done.

So did EG see the PS3 version in Birmingham or not? Seems odd that that detail was overlooked in the article.

"...I doubt it'll be released this year in Europe. But I don't know."

This is pathetic. You either know that things will be completed in time for Xmas for Europe or you don't.

What kind of project managers do they employ at Epic?!

They've been dangling this carrot for so long, it's getting stale!
  • cheeseweasel #9 4 years ago

Well, to be fair zedzee, Epic isn't publishing the game, so it's out of their hands.

PS3 version was playable on LAN yesterday. It is indeed rock-solid and the bugs that were evident were relatively minor but need to be dealt with. The code on display was about a week old so what issues we saw are probably already fixed by now.

If you read the article you'll see that the European delay is down to localisation issues which isn't something you can predict quite easily when you take into account all those languages.

So we are to concluide from this and yesterday's PS3 vs. 360 that IF devs can be arsed to code properly for PS3, it performs admirably.

I played the PS3 version last night and it seemed pretty well finished to me. If it's just localisation issues then it's a shame these things take so long!

There were no framerate issues at all and it looks as good as any PS3 game I've seen. But it pales in comparison to the PC version. Even if you had a mouse, it still runs 20% slower (fact) and has jaggies galore and less detail. And I'm guessing most PS3 users won't ever play it how it's supposed to be played, ie with a mouse. The xbox staff there stayed entirely tight-lipped when I asked if the 360 version would have keyboard and mouse support.

The explosion in console FPSs is completely baffling to me. The slow, inaccurate and unresponsive control system is just pathetic, on any console.

But it's possibly the best PC game I've played for a very, very long time...

You can use a mouse and keyboard in the PS3 version. But, apparently, not the 360 version, at least not at launch.

I dont know if either console will support keyboard and mouse, but i do know right now 360 does not support Mouse input at all, so that would require a firmware update from Microsoft, its not just upto Epic. I would hope the PS3 supports it from the off, as the web broweser does so it cant be that hard.

Where have you all been? They announced kb/m support for the PS3 months ago:

There are thankfully options to restrict m/kb present when hosting a server too.
