Euro PSP gets firmware update

PS3 version 2.00 around corner?

Sony has whipped out its wrench and updated the European PSP firmware to version 3.72.

It should stop things going wrong when you are playing downloadable PSone games on your handheld, and it also adds support for the new remote start feature, which lets you turn on your PS3 using your PSP rather than fingers on your hand.

This, clever-clogses among you will realise, is a feature you will need PS3 firmware version 2.00 to use, suggesting that it is not too far away at all.

Rumours have already suggested that it would be here at the end of October, and bring with it cross media bar customisation, a separate PSN and PlayTV category, and new music and video playlists and groups.

We will keep our oranges peeled.

  • Rash' #4 4 years ago

you can listen to your music while browsering the web or viewing photos. enter the xmb when in either mode. simple. :)
  • ProdigyBE_OPM #5 4 years ago

Dude, you can do the photo/music stuff from day one, you know.
Start playing a cd, press the home button, and just go to photo's.

The PS3 will Wake-on-LAN when you connect through Remote Play. That's all there is to it.

"Rumours have already suggested that it would be here at the end of October..."

Considering its the 31st today, somehow I doubt it will make end of October.

But I'd love to be proven wrong...

Anyone around here that owns the redesigned PSP? Is batterly life really any better? There are finally some games around that I want to play (FF Tactics being the main one) and the PS3 connectivity makes it attractive as well.
  • Beano #13 4 years ago

"The PS3 will Wake-on-LAN when you connect through Remote Play. That's all there is to it."

But I bet the will be a way to shut down the PS3 remotely also - that would be pretty simple to implement.
  • Beano #14 4 years ago

"Is batterly life really any better?"

Yes, battery life is the same as the old "fat" PSP.

The battery in PSP slim is smaller but more "efficient" (Sony-spin).

Don't firmwire updates happen on Wednesdays?
  • Les #16 4 years ago

"Yes, battery life is the same as the old "fat" PSP."

So still 3 to 4 hours? That's way too short... :(
  • belziah #17 4 years ago

    @Les

If you're only getting 3-4 hours, you've got a broke machine

Errr, it goes back to stand-by when you quit Remote Play on the PSP?
  • andyk #19 4 years ago

music playlists would be a big plus -especially if they can include tracks sourced from media servers as well as the hdd.

So how does the ps3 remote start work? the PS3 has to be already switched on and in remote play mode? how is that switching it on?

If the PSP can wake up the PS3 from standby, I will be impressed.

edit: when I mean stand-by I mean when the PS3 is effectively off, but with the little red led on.

"Errr, it goes back to stand-by when you quit Remote Play on the PSP?"

Not today with the current PS3 firmware... but I quess it may after we get 2.0 soon.
Let's see how it actually works ;)
  • SeesThroughAll #21 4 years ago

It's not a very difficult feature to implement, the PS3 simply needs a low-energy consumption mode in which it just leaves the internet connection open (thus spending a bit more energy than regular stand-by), and waits for a ping from either an ad-hoc connection or from the PSN.

This should be optional, of course.
  • Beano #22 4 years ago

@andyk: Wake-on-LAN is nothing revolutionary... been available on PCs for years.
  • Beano #23 4 years ago

@SeesThroughAll: Doesn't even have to be in a "low-power-mode"... a normal stand-by (red-led) mode could be enough if the PS3 is able to wake on LAN activity (like many PCs)... in theory depending how the PS3 hardware is done ;)

    @Steroyd
"Don't firmwire updates happen on Wednesdays?"

I've no idea. I was really just being pedantic :) I hope so anyway, usually theres plenty of features added that I make use of. Do wish they'd maybe give more information about firmware release dates and features implemented ahead of the actual dayof release.

Had a play with remote play the other day. Quite impressed to be honest. The ability to remotely power-on (and off) the PS3 would be much more useful though. Downloading updated PSP firmware now .... (and awaiting PS3 update ....)

"If you're only getting 3-4 hours, you've got a broke machine"

I haven't (yet) but that's the impression I've got from PSP's battery life. My brother has one and he's charging it quite often.
  • Red-Moose #27 4 years ago

    No Home though. Bastards.
  • AOFanboi #28 4 years ago

Home was delayed to 2008 wasn't it?
  • Drakron #29 4 years ago

UMD drive drains a lot of energy, 3-4 hours sound about right if its in use.

If its not ... well maybe you 6-7 hours.
  • Gaol #30 4 years ago

Remote viewing your PS3 from afar is a great idea in theory but there's a few probs:

-If we're talking about remote playing games, then stuff designed for 720p is gonna look shit on the PSP screen
-Again on games, theres the controller layout which differs on PSP
-Photos viewed through remote play didn't look as good as stuff stored on the memory stick last time I checked
-If we're just talking about videos/mp3/photos then, sorry, but my ipod does all this already and its easier to carry

Sony need to spend time expanding infrastructure mode on games so that you have one PSN ID for psp/ps3; that would be something. The wireless capabilities of psp are terribly underused, compared to even Nintendo's DS.

In short: Instead of messing around with all this ultimate gadget shit, give us an XBox Live rip off.

"In short: Instead of messing around with all this ultimate gadget shit, give us an XBox Live rip off."

Like I said many, many times before: That would be the most stupid thing Sony could do. People that love Live are not going to move to the PS3 if they have a Live-like service. And people that don't care about Live (the vast majority of gamers) are not interested in a Live-like service on PS3. That's why Sony is doing something different. Whether people will like that we just have to wait and see.
