Eternal Sonata PS3 confirmed

Due in 2008.

Tri-Crescendo's sought-after role-playing game Eternal Sonata has finally been confirmed for PS3.

That's according to the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu (pointed out by Kotaku), which claims to have been given the go-ahead to report on it from publisher Namco Bandai. Go ahead, it probably said.

It follows musical news from yesterday that Namco Bandai had listed a PS3 version of the game on its website, before it removed it to stop us all phoning up and asking what was going on.

Eternal Sonata is loosely based around the final hours of famous composer Frederic Chopin's life, in which he is said to have entered a dream world filled with other people suffering from incurable diseases (his was tuberculosis).

Atari will be publishing the 360 version here in October, while Famitsu believes the PS3 offering will be available sometime next year (in Japan first, then Europe).

Pop over to our Eternal Sonata gamepage for our recent thoughts on how it's shaping up.

Who cares, it seems like PS3 is always one step behind 360 with release dates. It's time to admit the truth that PS3 is the next Dreamcast, the latest US sales show people have already given up on it.

    there is no way back

good for PS3 only owners, XBL demo was nice.
  • souljacker2000 #3 4 years ago

yea well hope u PS3 enjoy it... long after i have played it ;p
  • Blerk #4 4 years ago

Keep up at the back, there! :-D
  • Irien #5 4 years ago

I'd be rather surprised if this appeared on PS3 anywhere outside of Japan. It makes sense in Jap-land for JRPGs to appear on a non-MS console, but over here?
  • Artemis_Matsas #6 4 years ago

Good news. I'm certainly going to buy this one.

I'm amazed how the Xbots will step in every thread that contains positive news for PS3 and try to give it a bad spin. Are you guys getting paid by M$ or what???
  • lambtron #7 4 years ago

"good for PS3 only owners, XBL demo was nice."

That would be the balanced view.

It does seem like the PS3 follows in the 360's footsteps at the moment when it comes to multiformat releases as they're nearly all late arriving when they're supposed to be simultaneous releases... Spider-Man 3, Colin McRae DiRT, Madden NFL 08, Stranglehold, etc., etc. However, for PS3-only owners that probably doesn't matter so long as they still get to play the game and in the case of Oblivion and DiRT it means they sometimes get a better quality game too.

True, but i would be rather bummed to have to wait for games even longer than I had too. I can't even hold out for the new releases next week let alone the ones coming in 10 months:p

  • morriss #11 4 years ago

Again, only 10 users want the game. Must be a glitch in teh systemz.
  • brooza #12 4 years ago

It must be, because I've just added it at it's still on 10
  • brooza #13 4 years ago

If you click for the full list, it says "Most Wanted (125)"

"Who cares, it seems like PS3 is always one step behind 360 with release dates."

360 is one step behind with some games too! Look at UT3, for example.

"It's time to admit the truth that PS3 is the next Dreamcast, the latest US sales show people have already given up on it."

Not really, it's still doing better than it was a few months ago. The Dreamcast failed because Sega ran out of money, basically. Stop over-reaching.
  • Steroyd #15 4 years ago

Yeah that's sooooooo different than Europe getting games later than everyone else.
  • GamesConnoisseur #16 4 years ago

Good for Eternal Sonata really, it would be a damn shame for it not being appreicated in Japan because only released on X360. So JPRG should be enjoyed by all including Japanese gamers.

I have tried and liked the new light/shadow system on XBL demo, looking forward to X360 release, cos an achievement whore and prefer good gamepad with vibrations.

Comments that PS3 is always behind and inferior, this would become less and less of an issue as more time passes, at least simply for devs to be more familar with system. This time next year I think we will see more balanced multi-ports and indeed larger proportion of PS3 having better version. But X360 will still lead the HD platform for a good while as having critical mass and ease of programming.

At the end, crying over a small differences really, gamers should just enjoy games itself!

    @ IINickyII.

The PS3 is nothing like the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast had a load of original quality games. And people didn't give up on the Dreamcast, SEGA did, because they couldn't afford not to.

    ps. Eternal Sonata yadda yadda.

"That would be the balanced view."

Which doesn't seem terribly welcome here a lot of the time, so it seems.

I get the impression that MS have paid for a timed exclusive on this - although have nothing other than a hunch to back this up.
  • Les #20 4 years ago

xbots say: "we get it first LOL"
sony fanboys say: "360 has lost an exclusive"

But no matter what way you put it, it's better for the PS3 to get it late than not at all...

Microsoft seem to be effectively shutting down all reasons to side with the PS3 other than the Playstation name.

The 3rd party exclusives are dwindling, while Microsoft seem to be spending a fortune securing exclusives fro the 360. And those that are multiformat seem to be either inferior to the 360 or are timed for release after the 360 version (sometimes both).

Whenever Sony comes up with anything original MS counters with its own version (coolroom/home).

MS online service is superior in every respect, except price. 9000 pieces of DLC now available including some cracking XBLA games.

The hardware is cheaper albeit less reliable, but this is being addressed at considerable cost to MS.

PS3 has a more feature rich piece of Hardware with BRD, built in WiFi and the cell.

But I feel the strategy of trying to be jack of all trades straight out of the box, and expecting the customer to pay for all this functionality has in reality locked them into this situation and it's now starting to bite them in the ass.

Les in "I can't wait for 360 sloppy seconds" SHOCKER!!!
  • FlamingCarrot #23 4 years ago

By the time its out on the PS3 perhaps the 360 will be back from the repairers.

"Eternal Sonata is a great RPG to give to your kid, but it’s also put together well enough for older gamers to enjoy. If you haven’t had much experience with RPGs, Eternal Sonata would be a great way to get your feet wet. Hardcore RPG fans might find the game a bit lacking, but we found enough to enjoy in the game to keep the limited role-playing elements far enough out of mind from start to finish for the game to keep from growing stale."

I guess I'll borrow it from a friend or something then :)

    @Xerx3s

Simple: I don't like trolling. I have never done it and never will.

I don't think that this fact is making me a fool. I always try to make inoffensive comments.

Another nail in the coffin for the 360
  • JonFE #28 4 years ago

Artemi, do you really consider terms like "xbots" and "M$" inoffensive ??? If you do not like trolling as you say, you really should act accordingly...
  • Strac #29 4 years ago

  • Artemis_Matsas #30 4 years ago

Ok, let me get this straight... i can understand that "xbots" is not a polite comment to make about someone, but clearly i was not reffering to all the Xbox users. This was for all the Xbox "zealots" that pop into threads that they have no real interest to post their opinion, except to troll. I am truly sorry if anyone was offended by that, even more if you count yourself among them.

On the other hand, why were you offended by "M$"? are you an employee of Microsoft, or do you think that they are doing their bussiness for charity? For the same reason, Sony=$ony and Nintendo.... well there isn't an s there to use, but they are money hungry bastards just the same as the others.

"Another nail in the coffin for the 360"

I know you think if you tell yourself that enough times it will come true...

Unless you're talking about Japan. In which case sod the coffin its already six feet under.
  • JonFE #32 4 years ago

Me offended? Nope, so no need to apologize.

But as I said, it seems a bit strange to discard "trolling" while using "troll sign language", if you know what I mean.

The sight of fanboys (of every console camp) bad-mouthing a news article regarding a rival console, is really getting old, but not much can be done about it, so your best bet is to just ignore it. Besides, before your original comment, only one comment could be attributed as done by an zealot, so it seems to me that you kind of jumped the gun.

As for substituting "S" with "$", "E" with "€" and so on, I feel that only 12-year-olds would still find them amusing, but, hey, what do I know...
  • DrunKao #33 4 years ago

I think it's only fair that we wait for UT3 and Haze to arrive late when they have to wait so sooo many other titles.
  • Drakron #34 4 years ago

    Namco? Europe?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
    ...

    Now THAT was funny.

Anyway Atari just lost a sale.
  • Scimarad #35 4 years ago

This comments thread is really pathetic. If the PS3 is so clearly doomed why do you all feel the need to keep saying it? Just grow the fuck up!
  • TheTeaboy #36 4 years ago

    @IINickyII

"the latest US sales show people have already given up on it."

Oh the US have spoken have they? guess thats it then... And while we are at it, must be time to stop watching Football, Ruby and F1 and move on to shyte like American Football, Baseball and NASCAR.

I personally think its too early to make such statements, Im still waiting for something this console generation to make it worth-while for me. Bioshock is awesome, but can play that on the PC. But if people are having fun with whatever piece of hardware they own/use, then more power to them!

Woot, Go Bears! ... or whatever.
  • Scimarad #37 4 years ago

I think I'd be more inclined to being pleased that games like Eternal Sonata and AC6 are heading to the PS3 and that we are getting a new Persona than worried that 'Americans don't like it'.
  • Steroyd #38 4 years ago

I have tried and liked the new light/shadow system on XBL demo, looking forward to X360 release, cos an achievement whore and prefer good gamepad with vibrations.

So Home and Sixaxis with rumble won't be released by then for definate?

the latest US sales show people have already given up on it.

JRPG's not selling well in America? Shocking.
Next thing you know you'll be telling me that it sells like crap in Europe.
  • BBIAJ #39 4 years ago

"...and in the case of Oblivion and DiRT it means they sometimes get a better quality game too."

But Darren, in the case of DiRT on the PS3, it was stripped of a lot of its geography, was it not?
  • Steroyd #40 4 years ago

Wouldn't the trophies be available before Trusty Bell is released which is my point previous titles don't mean crap because you've probably already bought the Xbox 360 version anyway.
  • Scimarad #41 4 years ago

"But Darren, in the case of DiRT on the PS3, it was stripped of a lot of its geography, was it not?"

No, I believe it was missing the odd tree here and there...so I'm told. I certainly didn't notice any missing scenery but it IS definitely an improvement compared to the 360 version. I own both machines and I know which version I'd buy...

360 fanboys really won't let the dodgy port thing go but anybody with a shred of common sense has to see they are not down to an inherent weakness in the hardware. The PS3 has shown it can do some truly impressive things and, while these dodgy ports (and stuff like Lair and, to a lesser extent, Heavenly Sword) aren't doing the machine any favours, it has already proved it can do a hell of a lot better - Of course the fanboys don't want to hear that...

If the PS3 does 'fail' (and I really think the Japanese stuff mentioned elsewhere says it won't) then the only people celebrating will be idiots.

Can't wait for this now I know it's definitely coming. One of the games I'd have been most looking forward to if I had a 360.
