Episodic PS3 Siren game this summer News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

6 May, 2008

Sony Japan's new Siren game is an episodic downloadable title due out this summer.

Unveiled at Sony's PlayStation Day event in London today, Siren: Blood Curse is a PlayStation Network exclusive split into "twelve TV-style, suspense-packed downloadable episodes", which will be released at short intervals.

Set in the Japanese village of Hanuda, it sees a US TV crew arrive to research the legend of the "Vanished Village" where human sacrifice is meant to have taken place 30 years previously. That's where we'd go too.

According to Sony, players "discover the horrific curse that haunts Hanuda" and have to fight to save survivors from the living dead.

As with the other Sirens, Blood Curse employs a Sight-Jack system so you can see things from the perspective of your eager enemies, and Sony hopes that the episodic download approach will keep people on the edge of their seats.

Although nobody from Sony was immediately available to clarify (i.e. we went home when it turned into a rave), the trailer provided on the PlayStation Day press disk for Blood Curse is the same as the one for the Japanese game with the name Siren: New Translation.

You can check that out on Eurogamer TV and dazzle yourself with bloody screenshots too.

The PS2 games were scary stuff.....really looking forward to playing this in HD. Episodic downloads will suit this title too, as the PS2 gamescomprised a number of episodes telling a larger story. Now all we need are ICO and SotC HD updates :)

No we don't need a HD ICO and SOTC.

That team should be making new games. Not remakes.

Agree that we want Ico Team focusing on new games, but still episodic downloads of Siren is a great idea! It did not really get the attention first time around and looking forward to the games.

The first game was a bit duff, but Siren 2 is easily one of my favourite horror games of all time - so I'm very, very happy about this. The episodic thing perfectly fits with how I play these games too.

Sounds expensive... hopefully they will release a disk version later.

My thoughts exactly. If the pricing is right, I'm there.

I think it's a good step - there is of course the possibility it goes tits up - but it's good to see digital media getting more support in new ways. DLC has it's pros and cons, but with episodic content we could see a good thing happen. The pricing and pacing of release schedules needs to be well decided, as in cheap enough, and released quickly enough. But with some good support, this could be a really interesting concept.

Has an episodic game ever been successfully implemented before? Half-Life not necessarily episodic in the terms of the time between release of said episodes.
