Eidos files Kane & Lynch 2 trademark

Subtitled Dog Days, apparently.

Eidos filed a trademark for Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days earlier this month, suggesting that a long-rumoured sequel is indeed on the way.

The posting, spotted by superannuation, was filed for use with videogames by Eidos on 8th July.

We've not heard anything back from the publisher about it yet.

However, Eidos has actually been open about the idea of a sequel for nearly two years, with Eidos' then CEO Jane Kavanagh telling MCV that year, "We've already got Kane & Lynch 2 in production, which just goes to show the belief we have in it as a long-term franchise."

The original Kane & Lynch: Dead Men picked up a 7/10 review at the time of release.

Hope its better than the first one. Some nice ideas in there, but it was bloody rough at the edges.

And the name is a "Dog Day Afternoon" reference I guess.

I enjoyed the first overall, managed to get through to the end. I know a lot of people on here gave up. I will watch with some interest.

To be fair the first wasn't that bad in a Terminator Salvation kinda way (meaning rent it for a week but for christ sake don't buy it). I'll pass on the 2nd though I think.

If they can just steal a bit more from Freedom fighters this time around I will be happy. Every now and again the first game reminded me of Freedom fighters but it just was nowhere near as fun.

First one was bashed too much IMO. It wasn't great but neither was it bad. I hope No.2 is better!

They are good characters with pretty decent dialogue, but some of the gameplay was as ropey as hell. More than once I had to try and work out ways to fix the companion AI to get it to follow us properly. I don't think I've played a game with so many class-A bugs for years.

Somehow it managed to be a reasonably satisfying game, so that alone should bode well for a sequel - they just need to get rid of the dependencies on buddy AI and smooth some of the ludicrous difficulty spikes.

if they get it right this time i reckon it could be a future multi game. i love small, sneaky multiplayer games (see SC) or ones that involve trickery.

    The first WAS pretty awful.

It seemed very dated in terms of both graphics and gameplay. I picked it up for around 7 quid and havent had my monies worth.

It might be one to go back to, but I havent had the slightest inclination in 6 months...

Yeah well, just about the best-written game of the last 2 years went home with bruises and a pretty much general write-off. I remember that stupid Gerstmanngate over at Gamespot attained a degree of ludicrousness akin to the Darkfall business on here - only it wasn't any fun, nor did it make any kind of sense.
The lack of variation within the first game was indeed a problem, duly identified by Kristan in his review, but Kane & Lynch remains one of the most underrated video games in recent times. It promised a lot of progress and maturity for the medium, in spite of a few gimmicky moments too much rooted in traditional video game territory. I can't wait for the second one.
Hey, a few years down the road perhaps Kane & Lynch will feature in one of those great Sunday retrospectives of EG. It certainly deserves a place next to Pathologic and Vampire: Bloodlines.

    Raaja - my thoughts exactly.

    Baranga - Ditto.

    Freedom Fighters was AWESOME.

    Shocking shocker is shocking!

Can't wait for Jeff Gerstmann to review this one.

At least he can't get sacked if it's bad.

I actually really enjoyed the first one. It had its flaws but was a good game. The news of a second game is fantastic, but I'd rather see a new Hitman game before they start working on this.

Bought the first one recently and nearly threw it out the window.

    Tis AWFUL.

Excellent - I liked the first game a lot. Also think it looks fantastic - tons of style, terrific character models. I agree with the sentiments here that it is criminally underrated. Partly due to the Gerstmanngatelol crowd who probably never played it, partly it might be because the console version allegedly wasn't all that.
