Eidos cagey on new Lara title News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

3 December, 2007

Eidos has kept quiet over suggestions that new Lara outing will be called Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Suggestions it would don the title erupted after the publisher filed a US trademark for the name, spotted by the keen eyes of specialist site Trademork.

The filing will apparently cover both retail and digital distribution of the game, hinting that we could see it offered on Live in a similar way to Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Or it could mean we will simply be offered it on Steam like the rest of Eidos' catalogue.

Additional details are scant, other than rumblings it will be centred around the last five days of the Mayan Calendar, where portals between our world and the Underworld open and let nasty things have their way.

Eidos unveiled plans to expand on its Tomb Raider series earlier this year in a financial statement, alongside with promises it would extend Hitman, Just Cause and Championship Manager franchises.

Meanwhile those of you hungry for a bit of Lara should pop over to our Tomb Raider: Anniversary review to find out why it scored nearly top marks.

I hope Rob won't be fired from EG for reporting on this Eidos-related story ;)

Excellent; I bloody loved Anniversary PS2.

Remember Crystal Dynamics, more puzzling and less combat.

Let her fucking die! The first game was decent at the time, all the rest have been samey shite.

/slap

The last two games have been great! Especially the last one. Which was technically the first one.

Legend > Anniversary, but both were pretty darn good.

More of the same or better, please!

I really doubt Eidos would ever let Lara die, especially now that she's getting popular again.

I just hope they won't start churning out sequels on an annual base, because that's what (almost ?) killed the franchise first time round.

Legend > Anniversary

Admit it, you got that the wrong way round, didn't you?

You did, right...?

Agree... it must be Anniversary > Legend !

Legend was not a "real" TR game IMO :|

Anniversary was a much, much better game than Legend but then Crystal Dynamics didn't design that, they only tweaked and remade it. Legend suffered from having those awful vehicle sections and the urban-based levels are less interesting than exploring tombs and stuff. IMO.

I'd like to see a new game made more in the style of Anniversary than Legend please... oh and proper 720p support and a smooth 30 fps framerate while you're at it... thanks! :)

Anniversary is great! Yeah that just the orginial tweaked for the 2007 crowd and retroheads.

New iteration would need to be able to stand out from Drake's Fortune in my view.

Underworld, if its different enough rather than retreads of orginial/Anniversary then I ll be interested.

The last two games have been great, so I'm looking forward to more. Hopefully they'll cut down on the combat though.

"New iteration would need to be able to stand out from Drake's Fortune in my view."

The Uncharted vs. Tomb Raider comparison is a bit misunderstood.

Uncharted is 80% shooting and 20% exploring/platforming while a "real" Tomb Raider game (like Anniverary) usually is 80% exploring/platforming and 20% shooting.

Both great games though - just very different ;)

@Beano - According to EG's review, Uncharted is 50% shooting and 50% exploring/platforming. ;)

So there's only been one "real" TR game then?...

I agree though, that's how a good TR game is focused.

Well I've played and completed it... it's 80% gears-of-war-shooting and 20% lara-stuff-but-not-as-good ;)

I'd be happy with a non-shit 360 version of Anniversary really.

That title, "Underworld", just makes me think of Mike Baldwin's undies factory on Coronation Street. Is that just me?

i really really like the two newer games... i adore the stylish character design thing theyre doing and keeley hawes voice is totally awesome...but i dont think they need to compete with drakes...ive finished that and although it LOOKS like tomb raider meets gears initially it feels absolutely NOTHING like a tomb raider game... tr is very prcise and drakes is not...i would like to see a truly stunning looking tr game though
