EGTV: Haze demonstration

Doak walks us through it.

Those of you in surveillance vans outside Eurogamer TV will have noticed a new trailer for Haze joining the cinematic line-up.

Look a little closer and you'll see it is the first footage of the game being played, as boss of developer Free Radical - David Doak - walks us through the Abandoned Resort level.

This is one of the latter stages from the game, after you as Shane Carpenter have defected from the global mega-force Mantle, and joined the Rebel forces resisting them.

As we explore the damaged structure, the importance of using Nectar against the Mantle forces is illustrated time and time again. This drug may be their biggest advantage, but it's also their greatest weakness.

For example, Doak kills a Mantle soldier and approaches the corpse. He scavenges it with his knife, drenching the blade in Nectar and creating a grenade containing the remaining fluid in the dead man's tanks. These two weapons turn out to be Doak's bread and butter.

A fling of the knife will pierce your opponent's armour and administer a healthy dose of Nectar, causing an overdose. Similarly a Nectar grenade will fumigate the area causing the same outcome. Once a Mantle soldier has taken too much, all hell breaks loose - the blinkers go on and violence comes from whatever is closest, even allied troops.

So through Doak goes, watching Mantle soldiers fight and kill each other, before he moves in to clear up the remainder - scavenging corpses to restock his supplies. He can also sneak up on Mantle forces when they're not looking and slash the pipes connecting the injecting Nectar tanks, causing a spray of fluid and more overdosing.

Doak also uses the Rebel skill of playing dead to trick others, steals flat-footed enemies' weapons to kill them with, and demonstrates the roll manoeuvre his side can use to dodge heavy explosives.

They're all examples of the "thinking man's game" Free Radical has promised us, and will be delivering exclusively on PS3 this November - 360 and PC versions are yet to be confirmed.

Having watched it has toned down my expectations of it slightly, seems solid enough. Still, 4 player co-op'll probably sell it for me anyway.

I had very high hopes for this when it was first revealed but having seen the vid it looks very disappointing! Personally I think the idea of the nectar is a sad way to try and make this game something other than an average FPS. Also I know its not released yet but the A.I. looks awful! When he overdoses the guards they ignore him and go straight for their allies! I thought they were supposed to be on the rampage and attack anyone in sight!? Oh well can't see me getting this one.

Could have sworn the latter were comfirmed yonks ago, then it was timed exclusive(exclusiveness sells theory... not when we already know the other platforms are being worked on too, which has to be true for a Q1 2008 release), so now either they know the trick didnt work and want to cast more doubt thus selling more copies or Sony slipped them some cash.(course they've never done that before eh Jack?... or whatever his name is)

Haze is only a TEMPORARY exclusive game for the PS3.

Ubisoft had made it 100% clear that Xbox 360 and PC games were in development. This is the EXACT same thing that happened with Assassins Creed...One minute they say it is on the Xbox 360...the next minute it is supposedly exclusive to the PS3...then we find out that it is in fact coming out for the Xbox 360.

Most people agree that this is just a marketing trick to try and help the poor sales of the Playstation 3...the problem is EVERYONE knows that this game is also going to end up on the PC and Xbox 360.

I don't think it matters anyways, because it certainly isn't anything special.

Muftak: Yes thankyou but read the rest of my post too...

EdwardGamer: Yes like I was trying to say, they simply must be in development for them to have said that those versions were due for Q1 2008(even though its changed now), Publishers dont waste money throwing out code to suit any console manufacturer --who would be the only ones who benifit from that-- unless the publisher got paid to do so. :)

Played it at PAX. It's fun but nothing special.

The best you can hope from shooters these days is that it is fun. I haven't played a special shooter in a while. Even Bioshock was 8/10.

waiting for the 360 version. Magic 8 ball is telling me its coming, so I'm gonna totally ignore what the developers and everyone else says.

Got plenty of games to keep me occupied until it comes out. if it doesn't, then I'm probably not going to lose a lick of sleep, but I do enjoy an FPS.

Haze is coming to 360, look in any magazine it's there and have been confirmed it will reach the PC & 360 at later date. Unreal III is also coming to 360 & PC.

It looks like it's going to be a competent FPS, no more, no less. Couldn't look more generic and bland if it tried to. Nectar's just another weapon - yawn.
