We Love Katamari Reader Review
Journo: Can you see it? It's beautiful. It's the best game ever.
Man: No. I can't see it.
Journo: ...but it's so original, and artistically coherent - and really wierd and japanese.
Man: I can see that, but it's just not that good. Maybe if it were only 20 quid I wouldn't feel as ripped off and I'd think it was better.
Journo: ...but the king of all the cosmos has tights! ...and his chin is awesome!
Man: Yeah, that's true; but at the end of the day the handling of the ball is just a bit rubbish, and that's basically the whole game.
Journo: ...but it's endearing, poignant, self effacing, brilliant, and other assorted superlatives that make the best thing ever
Man: Endearing? Yes. Poignant? Yes. Funny? yes. Great game? Not so much. Total Arthouse Autofellation? a bit too much.
So, what are you getting at?
Probably the most over-rated game experience of all time. After the original Half Life.
If you can get it cheap it's worth owning just because it's probably one of the few games that actually counts as a genuine peice of art, and as such there is much to appreciate about it.
However, if you want a peice of art that's also a great game, find yourself a copy of cookingdom (Jap only - colloquially known as "chef") on the original PSOne. Equally art house and wacky. Much better actual game.
One more thing...
Everyone goes on about the music in katamari. Yes it's funny, yes it fits the game very well - but if you really think about it is that only because you don't understand japanese? Imagine if it was in english and it was just some dude singing "I love katamari! it's really great! the king has a big chin! etc." it would wear thin pretty quick. Luckily, the music isn't translated so it's good, but remember the people who made this game are japanese so what they get from it is totally different.
- 8 out of 10 for being a creative, moderately amusing, and artistically valid piece of videogame history.
- minus 2 for really not being that great a gameplay experience (humour and silly music does not equal gameplay).
- minus 1 for being full price.
- cookingdom is much better. Go buy it from somewhere.
