Mario Kart DS Reader Review

Reader Review by LetsGo

27 January, 2006

Before I start, I have never played Mario Kart on the N64 or in-fact double dash on the Gamecube, I come fresh from the delights of the Mode 7 engine from the original Mario Karts! However, I part of me wish’s I had as after opening Mario Kart on the DS for my birthday, wildly excited I ended up disappointed. There are so many things missing for me in this version (or taken out if you will) I feel that the Mario Kart package is left with a above average karting experience.

Single Player

I will list the things I miss from previous versions of Mario karts….

  • Coins! In the old days of Mario Kart, coins were scattered around the track and if you collected them, you would receive a small speed boost! Also, in true sonic stylee’! you needed coins to prevent oncoming nudging attacks from the other karts. This was a great feature which is greatly missed in this version. Instead we have a rather annoying ‘drifting’ move to gain a speed boost, but more about that later…!
  • Falling into water! If you fall into water, you cannot get out, you need to get replaced onto the track! Why? Why cant I swim my way out a little back onto the track! It makes the retro tracks with water VERY frustrating!
  • Ranbow Road – The new rainbow road is rubbish, in-fact it’s a bore! Wheres the old one Ninty?!?!? We don’t want this new boring rubbish!

Not to mention that the 3D engine is terrible. It’s so easy to drive around the tracks, even the new ones with obstacles! There is no sense of speed at all! Give me the mode 7 engine any day!

Multiplayer

This is, the most poorly designed multiplayer game on record (and dont give me the 'this is Nintendos first attempt at an online game, pick up any online title today and your see a better implemented online game, there is NO excuses!) . Where are the high score tables for the tracks? Where can I exchange online ghosts with top players and friends? Where can I have an advanced searched option on when searching for games? Why can’t I change the game rules like limit certain in-game items (blue shells gonna get ya!)? Why can I only play certain online tracks? Why can’t I play Battlemode online! Why can I only play against four people online? Why c0an’t I chat to my opponents? Why cant I add someone to my friends list after a really good MK:DS session with him?

Nintendo, if this is the limitations of the Nintendo DS online, then Wifi is going to be a big disappointment! How can there be latency issues on some of the most complicated maps when I can play SOCUM on my PSP with 15 other people online? Which also has clans/message boards etc…?

At the end of the day, MK:DS is good, its not great, its good.

Overrated? Yes! Worth a purchase? Yes! 6/10? Yes, a very low 6 at that!

Thatisall.

Sounded more like you were reviewing the WI-FI mode of the DS rather than Mario Kart DS, to be honest. Also, there wasn't any more about the Drifting move, which requires more skill than collecting coins. As for the water, Kart's can't swim and if you end up in water it's right that you get penalised so you try not to do it again.

Disallowing online chat is Nintendo's way of making the experience a bit more kid freindly, I think.

My, that was a bit one sided... what a litany of hate :/

The "drift burst" requires plenty of skill and patience to pull off effectively, at first there's a tendency to take the corners wide which loses you more time than it gains - but once you start getting it right the world's your lobster. Maybe the reviewer needs to be forced to spend more time with the game?

It's to protect kids from perverts, and speaking as the father of a 6 year old who loves MK:DS I'm very happy it's high on their list of priorities.

I think it's fairly clear that this reviewer is more of a retro-gamer - it's new, it introduces new concepts and is therefore inferior in this reviewers eyes. Personally I prefer to look forward - simply put, I love this game.

I realise it's been a long time since I played the original MK - but I don't remember any coins? I definitely don't remember the speed boost from them.

Falling in water has always been a no-no, with the exception of a few beach levels on MK:DD where you could pootle about the shallow part - which you say you've not played. So, err, not sure what you're remembering.

Yes, the euphamism 'kid freindly' means 'no swearing or perverts' - I'm all for it.

Kid friendly is too juvenalised

Family Friendly is probably a better term. Don't want me old mam hearing 12 year old americans swear continuously over online games after all.

And yeah, VERY harsh review.

Bloody hell, that was a rant and a half, wasn't it? Nice of you to pick out all the bad points of the game, and mainly on the wifi experience, and still give it a 6/10 - very interesting... er... scoring technique.

Yes, there are some missing aspects on the wifi that you would have expected from a game in this generation (I too would have liked to have seen all that you list implemented), but Nintendo had good reason not to put in the chat facilities for the reasons others have noted.

Is there nothing of this game you like? I mean, the whole point of having water there is for it to be an obstacle, like the walls that make the circuits. If you don't have water, then you might as well not bother with some of the walls too. Drifting is easy as pie, although I can't utilise it well for wifi mode, but it's something new to learn - why do you want a game that is a clone of the original? Where's the advance in that - it certainly wouldn't have been well-received. And the graphics are pretty darn good for a £99 handheld.

I, like you, haven't play many MK games but I made accommodations for aspects that didn't reach my expectations (whatever they were). Nintendo have done a fine job with its first piece of wifi gaming, near faultless (I was pitying those that couldn't get it working) and it's a game that I'll be keeping forever because it's so basically fun that you can't forget how to play and so don't need to re-train back to a decent standard.

And yeah, what they said about ! and gr4mm3r. 00h y34h, l33t 5k1lls.

I love Mario Kart, but after reading your review I've realised there are countless things that could, and should of been improved on, the ability to remove blue shells for a start would be an instant winner.

Harsh! I know the game has it's flaws and if I didn't know better, I'd say this review was written by someone who got Blue Shelled before winning a Grand Prix!

The Blue Shell is the invention of the devil and should be removed, but the coins were trivial, marginally increasing your top speed. MK:DS is a refined version, giving some of the best parts of all the games.
