Company of Heroes Reader Review
Company of Heroes, Still awesome
Picture this: Its pissing with rain, you are walking with your unit of 4 other guys through a deserted city devastated by allied bombing. You notice a muzzle flash from a building only 30 feet from your position and you see a rocket hurtle towards your men and impact at their feet it sends one man flying, killed instantly and knocks everyone else off their feet. Your unit scrambles to their feet and takes cover inside of the crater left by the explosion. You attempt to return fire but the enemy now has a heavy machine gun inplaced in the second floor window, you are out gunned and out positioned. Another man takes a hit from the machine gun and all they can do is wait to die.
But hope appears, the sound of caterpillar tracks of an M3 Sherman tank. The tank storms in trampling debris and bounding over a sandbag wall scattering the bags. The tank comes to a halt in the centre of the fire-fight and the men take cover behind it, safe for now, out of the line of fire. The tanks muzzle slowly turns toward the window, bullets bouncing off of its heavy armour. From the short range its an easy shot for the tank, the rocket passes through the buildings wall and explodes inside the room, the wall crumbles and debris and the late axis machine gunner fly through the window onto the street. The men are saved, they just need to get out of there before the rocket launcher can get position.
This is not a film or one of my own real life experiences I am describing but that of a game I played and loved. I haven't over dramatized or exaggerated the experience all those things really happened in the game and happen frequently.
I found out recently that a friend of mine who is a massive RTS fan of games like Command and Conquer and Total War, had not heard of Company Of Heroes and I just couldn't believe it, what a treat he has been missing.
I have always been a fan of C&C and have played every game in the series thoroughly and it took me some time to accept COHs greatness. Not only are the graphics combined with the physics beautifully realistic but the gameplay is really well balanced, fast paced and tactical. Just what any RTS needs.
It costs next to nothing now but will still require some beefy hardware even though it has been out for some time. I recommend it to any C&C fan.
