X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse Reader Review
I'm a big fan of first person / team RPGs, having played Wasteland, Golden Sun, and World of Warcraft for 100s of hours each.
What I look for is a captivating storyline, challenging combat that requires reactions, intelligence, and the right equipment at the right time. It should provide plenty of locations to explore, so I can pick a task that suits my mood - combat, exploration or trading. If the game has good graphics, well that's a bonus.
Sadly, X-Men has got this all backwards. Graphically it is very pleasing, and the complexity level of skills and equipment is low maintenance while being flexible. However, the story is as linear as a rail gun, essentially scripting your every step through a series of samey maps.
The combat (on Normal level) is utterly unchallenging. The AI that takes over for the 3 team members you don't directly control does such as good job that they are effectively invincible except on end of level bosses, and the "Blink" teleport mechanism means that you can instantly revive dead characters anyway. No combat management is required - simply randomly clicking will defeat pretty much any enemy in the game (I've only played the first of 4 stages so far) and inventiveness in combat plays no part at all.
Perhaps the game is more entertaining if you are a fan of the X-Men franchise, but otherwise, I recommend you wait for something a little more exciting to come along.
