Team Fortress 2 Reader Review
Now here's a game I like. It appeals to me on damn near every gaming level. It's fun to play, stylish to look at, very well balanced, and it rewards skill over knowledge of where all the secrets are. Play like a team, and you'll do well. Play like a skillful team, and you'll win every time.
I'm not going to dwell on the gameplay much at all. I love it, and Eurogamer already did that. This review is more centred around the Xbox Live experience. For a game this good, its online capabilities are nowhere near good enough.
It has none of Halo 3's online polish, and getting together with your friends is a baffling ordeal. The hosting is also a little flaky, and the restarts after the match is over are handled without any panache.
Never has a brilliant game been more in need of a patch to make it more user-friendly. I want to have easy invites for my friends without going through the 360's UI to make that happen. I'd like to play with my friends in ranked matches. I'd like an option to talk only to my team before the match starts so we can plan classes ahead of the minute's setup (which is necessary game time for, say, medics and engineers).
All told, I will keep playing TF2 for a very long time. It's such an incredibly good online FPS. I write this (my first reader review) because I am so very, very eager to get this fixed up so that it can earn the 10 that it should have.
And, as a final thought, after they patch the online usability, another six maps wouldn't go amiss. You hear me, Valve...?
