Gears of War Reader Review

Reader Review by the_jamaster

29 March, 2007

Gears Of War was a game that was hyped up a lot over the course of 2006 and it turns out it paid off unlike other games that have recieved the same treatment. Anyway this was Epic Games first title for the Xbox 360 system and was seen by many to be the killer app the Xbox 360 needed in a similar way into what Halo did for the original Xbox.

Gears Of War is based around an anti-hero character which you play in Marcus Fenix that after being busted out of prison faces War. You will be introduced to a team and as you progress through the game you will be able to issue commands to your buddies although they are limited when compared to the likes of GRAW or another tactical shooter. It goes without saying that cover is your friend in this game. Use it or die. The Locust are a formidable enemy and they will come in different types from the speedy Wretches to the devastating Boomers you will have to watch out for yourself and your team to be successful. You can heal squadmates though if they do go down unfortunately they do not return the favour.

The game is split into five acts with the story being fast paced. Basically in case you don't know your job is to stop the Locust who are trying to wipe humanity out. The story of the game gives you something to want to fight for which is a nice change considering that some games are all on action and little on story where as Gears Of War gets both right. Unlike the generic usual enemies you face the Locust do provide a challenge and as an enemy they will strike fear into you in a similar way that the Helghast did in Killzone. But you have some great weapons at your disposal to fight back with the infamous Lancer being particularly useful if you don't take them down with bullets how about a little chainsaw action!!! Which is a lot more satisfying than your normal melee move. You will also find sniper rifles and other weapons including the torque bow as you get further into the game.

Gears Of War in a lot of ways is like a Hollywood action movie and at times you'll find it hard to tell the difference. The graphics are fantastic and do set the bar very high this could be the best looking game you've ever played. Plus the story is good throughout with great voice acting and an intense orchestral score make for a fantastic all around package. This is a game that you will want to play over and over again not for the achievements but because Gears Of War is so fun to play. If single player is not your thing then the online play should please you enough and is arguably one of the best Live titles on the Xbox 360 right now.

Gears Of War really is a game that was worth waiting for and lived up to the hype. It blends lots of things together and most of it works this is one of the best experiences you can have on your Xbox 360. It's simple you can't miss this.

I agree with the millions of gamers who believe Gears of War deserves the same 10 out of 10 review score you evaluated it with.

Gears of War posesses the highest quality textures ever seen in a next-gen game so far, and the largest number of polygons that generate an incredible amount of detail. The framerate is incredibly smooth both online and offline. The lighting is absolutely amazing, and the load times are virtually non-existent because everything is done in real-time. The sounds of bullets, bombs, grenades, and satellite weapons also add intensity to the game. Gears of War is incredible, and that is why it has won so many graphic and sound awards.

The Offline mode branches off into multiple different directions quite a few times during the game. So, even though you might beat the game, you will definitely not have seen everything the game has to offer for dozens of hours, because there will have been plenty of areas you didn't see. You will have to beat the game several times before you end up seeing the entire game.

You will need to explore all the levels and all the stages to collect all 30 of the COG Tags hidden throughout the game. The COG Tags are a cool feature, because they add a lot of replay value to the game; many times you find COG Tags with people online, and it is very fun.

Gears of War has an Online Co-Op mode, similar to the awesome one used in Perfect Dark Zero. Gears of War takes it a step further, though, because you play with a friend online, and there are also two other CPU controlled characters. At times, the game will branch off where both of you are with a CPU controlled character exploring different parts of the game, and you need to provide cover for each other. It is cool becuase you will then reunite and the game will enter some extremely packed action sequences. Gears of War also lets you determine what those CPU characters will be doing in terms of whether you want them in several different modes, such as on the Attack or on the Defensive. It is qute cool, and very diverse!

The other part of Gears of War is an Online Multi-Player where up to eight players can play. It will be a four-on-four situation where four players control good guys, and four players control bad-guy Locust characters. All of the levels in the Multi-Player Online mode are great. It is always very fun using the chainsaw in mutliplayer mode when two players get one enemy with a chainsaw at the same time, and the games characters say things like, "Oh, man! That was nasty!" And it is fun when you hop over a ledge, plant a grenade in your enemies belt, then take off and watch him explode behind you!

Those modes previously mentioned can also be taken advantage of even if you don't have access to the Internet. You will just need to do it in split-screen mode. You can also do it if you have multiple Xbox 360 systems in your home with multiple TV sets.

Gears of War has revolutionary new gameplay the way ammunition is loaded and reloaded, and you gun can potentially get jammed if you mess up. That really is an AWESOME feature!

It is also awesome the way physics and bounces can be taken into consideration when you throw grenades and see the estimated point where they will end up targeting.

The way larger enemies and HUGE explosions in the game get right in your face, and you can target them so closely witht the Sniper Rifle is amazing, because it shows how awesome the games graphics are. It also lets the subwoofer in your 5.1 sound system let you FEEEEL like you are experiencing those STOMPS from the larger enemies, and large Rockets, Grenades, and Satellite explosions!

The Rumble and Vibration technology in the Xbox 360 is also awesome. Once again, it makes you FEEEEEL like a part of the action the way the controller vibrates quickly when you are shooting machine guns, or rumbles in a unique way when you are using the chainsaw on someone! You can also FEEEL a HUGE BANG when you launch a Rocket. The Xbox 360 controller is great, and Gears of War takes advantage of the features it offers in awesome ways!

Overall, I perfectly agree. Gears of War deserves a 10 out of 10, and it is the best next-generation game made yet.

The next game I am looking forward with this much hype is Mass Effect, because Mass Effect has graphics just as amazing, and also has amazing new types of gameplay!!!

Yeah.. the explosions were so big, I got so pumped I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.

Seriously though, while it looked beautiful I got bored. I played it though to the end - tried it on hard but still boring - it's no Halo in terms of gameplay. Each to their own I guess.

edit: not a bad game and the first playthough was fun - just IMHO not a great game.
