Animal Crossing: Wild World Reader Review
Who'd have thought collecting fruit, watering plants and fishing could appeal so much to a man who used to spend SO many evenings fragging his mates in QuakeWorld Death32? Not me for sure!
I am that 30-something-jaded--gamer-who's-seen-it-all-before and yet almost every day I visit Zenfross to do some weeding, chat with my bizarre animal buddies (Cesar - you are the man!), pick fruit and sell it to that thieving opportunist Nook. Why? It's relaxing, it's absorbing and it's a genuinely innovative and compelling game design. It appeals to children, women and men. You can talk to anyone who's played it irrespective of age, gender or race and share the experience and the joy. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's genius and that's the sort of praise that doesn't come easily from me. It always was a great game (and essentially is the same game), but deploy it onto a portable slab of grey plastic (no Lite for me just yet) and it's genius shines through even stronger than with its beautiful forebears. Throw in WiFi to the mix and the evolution is almost perfect.
How do you describe it to the man-in-the-street? Tricky - unless you're very careful (and probably even if you are) they'll be writing it off as "kid's stuff" within 15 seconds of you opening your mouth and be pulling NeedFIFAUrbanDriver 2006 off the shelves for another fix of something they've played so many times before but have been conditioned to buy again and again.
The best bet is simply not to bother, just tell them it'll consume their life but they can put it down anytime. Tell them it's an ever evolving world that remains the same. Tell them they can do whatever they want, whenever they want. Tell them it blends seemlessly with the real world and yet is nonsensical fantasy. It all makes sense. And yet it doesn't. Just like the game and its ongoing appeal. You will come back to it. Again. And Again.
Why not 10/10? There's always room for improvement. Why can't I summon my slingshot with a hotkey? Why isn't there a "Sell All" button on the trading UI? Minor quibbles granted but quibbles nonetheless.
Whilst you go online and order it I must go and water my red turnips - you know how it is, they need so much care and attention before selling them at a 15,000 bells profit...
