EA unveils brand new boxing game News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Ellie Gibson

31 January, 2008

Electronic Arts has revealed a new boxing game for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii is in development at EA Canada.

As reported by 1UP, the game is titled FaceBreaker. It's described as looking "like a cross between Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and Team Fortress 2".

Expect bold, cartoon-style graphics, in other words, plus "real-time facial deformation". That's right, you can actually break your opponent's face open. But the portrayal of violence is much more Itchy and Scratchy than Raging Bull.

Fighters you can play as include Romeo, "a Latin lover known for his pelvic thrusts", and Russian demolitions expert Molotov, who has "a penchant for fighting dirty". Plus EA's Game Face technology will allow you to create a character using a photo of yourself.

"Arcade boxing takes me back to my roots in this industry," commented EA Sports boss Peter Moore. "This game signals our shift to adding more approachable fun to our product line-up."

Expect more news in the next few weeks.

Guess that's time at the bar for the Fight Night IP, then.

Sounds a bit Punch-Out!, if you ask me.

Punching someone's face open would have been far more entertaining with realistic graphics.

I don't want a cartoon boxing game, gimme Fight Night!!!! They make yearly sequels of crap sports games, then when they bring a decent sports game, we don't hear of it for 2 years!

Well I'd imagine that they are trying to differentiate the FN franchise and this, with Facebreaker aiming at the kids and FN going for the more realistic boxing simulation sector of the market.

Sometimes I think game developers are afraid to take a realistic approach to games these days.

Who knows, might turn out alright.

Yeah! All cartoon games will now be directly compared to Team Fortress 2!

@Clive Dunn I think it's wuite the opposite, with devs trying to go too realistic. I'm all for carttony fun games, but I just want fight night instead of this

Does it matter if it did, seeing as EA Chicago have been disbanded?

I bet scanning your face into the game and using the created character as an opponent will be difficult.

I wouldn't beat myself up over it though.

I wonder why they've discontinued the Fight Night franchise and shut the studio. I thought the last game sold very well.

Fight Night did sell well, Def Jam didn't

Edit : Which is why the Fight Night series has already been moved to an EA Sports studio

FaceBreaker, lol, that sounds far more horrific than a boxing game. Try the Joe Pesci scene from Casino.

Disappointed this is not a new FN game.

The problem with FN was that it was too good. Left themselves with no where to go gameplay wise. They couldn't exactly change the rules of boxing could they? The boxers don't change so much year on year either so a new game which adds a couple of new fighters isn't really going to cut it either.

I'm also dissapointed that there probably won't be another fight night. However, we still have fight night to play in all it's boxing perfection, so if this game is fun then we have 2 hopefully very different boxing games to enjoy :)

Why do I get the feeling that being able to scan faces in will cause controversy for the game?

Everyone must promise not to tell the Daily Mail anything.

I'm sure the fight night IP isn't dead, it's just on hold. This is EA afterall...

But this game sounds like it could be cool! FN was all about being realistic, where as this sounds much more arcadey :) I think it could be good.

@Redeye - SUPER PUNCH OUT was the best game ever! I still play it sumtimes, altho I have been able to clock it in one go for many, many years now... once you have memorized the opponents moves the game becomes way too easy...

No, it'll be a crippled PS360 port instead.

Sounds and looks like it'll be fun but FaceBreaker without Fight Night would be like FIFA Street without FIFA 08. Both footy games but appeal to different (sometimes) audiences.

There's definitely room for both in the market imho.
