EA to split Orange Box components News

PC News by Ellie Gibson

1 February, 2008

Electronic Arts has announced it plans to make the components of The Orange Box available separately.

The Orange Box, you will recall, was originally released for PC and Xbox 360 in October, and PS3 a bit later. It was comprised of Half Life: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress. Kristan thought it was marvellous.

The three components have been available separately via Steam for some time, but now EA boss John Ricitiello has said individual box copies are also on the way.

Speaking in a conference all he said, "We are unbundling Orange Box and releasing separate PC SKUs, Half Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress." Nice one John, one wonders if your hair is made of real silver.

No word on a price or date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

Being the genius that I am, I bought every game in the Orange Box separately. :) I decided I only wanted Ep. I, then I decided a week later I wanted Portal, then I enjoyed it so much, I decided I wanted Team Fortress 2.. and.. well, yeah.

I doubt this is a smart move. The value of Orange Box is fantastic. Thinking of the costs involved getting a boxed copy to the retailers I think that it will only be cheaper if you buy a single product - as soon as you buy two you might just get the Orange Box for probably 5 pounds more than the price of the two single copies.

Portal is fantastic and definitely worth replaying. Cost would have to reflect it.

Portal deserves 10 euros at least.
But the value of the Orange Box is unmatched. I bought it as a whole the day it came out on Steam... I loved Ep2, being a HL fan, I thought Portal was the greatest thing and am still playing TF2 daily. :)

Im not surprised they are doing this, Im amazed by the number of my m8s who said stuff like "I dont want that Team Fortress 2, Im not paying for a bundle with it in"

Idiots. My flatmate bought Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 seperately cos he didnt want portal lol, and paid extra for the privilige.

This actually makes me seriously tempted to buy Portal.

The rest never appealed to me...

Pardon my ignorance but what the heck does EA have to do with Valve games?

They've published the retail versions of Valve's games since their bust-up with Sierra/Vivendi.

Fuck shitty HL, thank god I can buy Team Fortress without the other wank games included.

Sorry HL fans, I'm a big FPS fan and I really dont see what HL brings to the table, can't stand all those boring enemies.

Fucks sake. The could have done this, you know, when the game was originally released... now it's kid of a bit pointless, since the boxed PC version of Orange Box is available for less than £20 anyway, and I can't imagine the three new games being less than £19.99 RRP.

You're a FPS fan and can't see what HL brings to the table?

So you love horror movies but can't see what obscene amounts of blood brings to the table?

Hmm... Aside from anything else, Half Life 2 brought the idea of throwing around physics objects as weaponry, something then ripped off by everything from Doom 3 to Bioshock
