EA throws Tiberium in the bin News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

1 October, 2008

EA has abandoned work on Command & Conquer shooter Tiberium.

"It is confirmed that Tiberium has been cancelled, as the game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and the EA Games Label," the publisher told Eurogamer. "Work on all other projects is continuing as normal."

The result will be sackings for a fair amount of the EA Los Angeles staff, although the publisher has promised to try and reposition them internally.

Tiberium last hit headlines in July when EA held the title back for quality purposes. The shooter had been poised to grant players control over ground troops, vehicles, air squads and ion cannon strikes in order to fend off nasty aliens.

Tiberium's demise follows a much more stringent EA quality control policy put into effect by silver-haired boss-fox John Riccitiello.

Worryingly, the move also suggests shooters based on the famous RTS series will never really work, as Command & Conquer: Renegade proved in spectacular fashion back in 2002.

Too bad. I am one of the few people who actually enjoyed Renegade back then it seems and I was looking forward to Tiberium.

what they should do then is jsut say its beta and let people have it for free. At least the hard work wouldn't be wasted and someone out there might enjoy it

Shame, I was hoping that this one would do well enough that they would make a Red Alert FPS

Part of me thinks well done EA for taking the step of canning a game which apparently wasn't up to scratch, another thinks it's a shame to cancel something which looked like it had potential and was obviously pretty far into development. The footage of it that appeared on EGTV a while back looked pretty nice.

Either way, EA's quality control is a lot better than it used to be.

With this, Renegade and Starcraft Ghost, it seems no quality RTS can ever be ported to a FPS/ 3D shooter.

And the potential for Multiplayer is amazing, just look at Savage 1+2 with its action/RTS hybridness.

I also liked Renegade. It had some very good moments; nothing beats placing an Ion Cannon beacon near a target and activating it from a safe distance.

Maybe they should have considered making it a first person RTS, like Battlezone I & II? Now that would have been cool.

Underpeforming in EA terms?
Did they forget to implement controls or something?
Every shit gets greenlighted at EA usually...

Funny that this happens when EA shares (like other companies) have been diving. That's what JR is there to do: keep the shareholders happy and screw the games, that's why there have been so many redundancies made since he took over. Instantly reducing your costs makes the company look better. Will it mean better games for us? Maybe... Maybe not. It certainly means that EA workers get screwed.

Wahaaay, thats one less game that will be screwed up with securom and 3 or 5 install limit DRM nonsense.

EA should now invest the rest of the budget for this title on play-testing their other games properly, rather than publish bug-ridden software for the paying public to beta test.

Why is it worrying? C&C is an RTS. Every game franchise doesn't need to be butchered into every genre going...

I feel bad about this because I thought the screenshots of Tiberium look like shit. So I was secretly wishing EA gets another appalling game out.

"high quality standards set by the team and the EA Games Label,"

This game must have been an absolute mess, if they can release Mercs 2 in the state it was and that’s the quality bar, then god help us all!
