EA teases Medal of Honor revamp

We'll hear more "in the months ahead".

EA has once again teased the rejuvenation of the Medal of Honor series following its latest round of financial results.

"In the months ahead, you'll hear more about our plans to revitalise core IP, including the Medal of Honor franchise," EA Games label boss Frank Gibeau said during a conference call (thanks Joystiq).

That comes just months after big boss John Riccitiello said that the next Medal of Honor was "somewhere out there" but he was "not yet in a position to discuss specific plans" and would "do so in due course".

Despite arguably setting World War II FPS events in motion when it published Medal of Honor: Allied Assault back in the day, EA's series has been on a break recently and has lost ground to its rival, Activision's Call of Duty.

The last big multiplatform Medal of Honor title was MOH: Airborne, which we rather liked. The series' most recent outing was MOH: Heroes 2 on Wii.

Medal of Honour: Slightly Modern Warfare...?

They've probably got a tough job now. World War 2 games aren't quite so popular these days thanks to a certain other one. And if they bring the war part up to date there'll be all sorts of claims of copying and such. Good luck to them I guess.

Battlefield also takes place in modern times, but nobody would accuse it of copying CoD because it has it's own style. That's what MoH needs aswell; it's own style that sets it apart from other war games.

Airborne was cool, I enjoyed it. Kinda hope this is on a similar tip.

    Hey EA, bring back SSX

They could do some incredibly interesting things if they had you playing on 'the other side'.

    YEA, give us SSX!

Btw, Did anyone play Stoked? It didn't look too bad, more 1080 than SSX.

What I really want to see is medal of honour: vietnam, or MOH: Korean war or play in the gulf war, or something like that. These are largley left alone by developers so it won't be stale, and will clearly set it apart from the call of duty seires and the battle field seires.

Plus I think it would be interesting :D

@Freek: Funny that you say this, because if anyone is copying someone else, it's Call of Duty copying Medal of Honor. That in itself is a bit of an incorrect statement as well though since (I believe) the developers of MoH:AA went off to form Infinity Ward, so if anything, they're copying themselves :-)

I do think now that COD moved off into modern days and out of the European scenarios (with World at War), WW2 Europe hasn't seen much coverage in games. Maybe MoH will find there's a spot there for them to fill and they'll be successful because there's no competition from CoD anymore.

Oh please no. Let's all agree on a moratorium on WWII shooters for the next five years. Why can't we explore other big wars in games? The falklands. The gulf war. Hell, I'd rush out to buy a WWI shooter. Anything but shooters set in '39-'45.

The core talent of MoH left to form Infinity Ward, but it's not copying if you invented the thing, and CoD definitely raised the bar along the way. Especially with it's multiplayer.

Was about time. More competition will push things more again instead of having COD being almost alone left in the frontlines of the FPS warfare. Even though MW isnt what all of them used to be back in the days ( ww2 ), still EA will have to release a MOH title that is at least similar quality to MW2 if they want to make things interesting for them and make some sales so this is all good news and hope we have some footage asap.

Still remember the good days when I was playing MOH and COD came along and surprised me. FPS werent even close to popular on consoles yet.

    I can see it now...

    Medal of Honour: Modern Warfighter
  • Paulie_P #14 2 years ago

I honestly couldn't see a WWI shooter working considering the stalemate nature of the war where battles were fought for minimal territory gain.

I should think there's plenty of gameable material left in WW2, if some developer would just think outside the box and focus on something else than Americans and Brits fighting in Europe after the D-Day.

Would be interesting to try and further develop a open world COOP Medal of Honour where you parachute into the game world. With some missions able to be tackled in any order. This would allow the game to be quite different from the call of duty games.

Airbourne was ok, but it certainly lacked a level of story and polish that I came to expect of MOH at that point...the overall engine was pretty good, but it seemed they cut everything else out to get the game out.

I wonder if they will risk going modern, you know what, I would i think they would sell a bucket load, but i wouldnt go all our for the over the top hollywood COD story (certainly in MW2).

How about MoH: Eastern Front... yes please. Apart from Red Orchestra and that last campaign in Call of Duty, the Eastern Front (the most brutal of the theatres) has gotten the least attention. It would be cool if they could make something there. I think we all know how generic French 40s fields look by now.

Hell give me Greece or Malta, or even the Finno-Russian war and I would be pleased.
