EA sets up 99c iPhone game developer

8lb Gorilla's first game out imminently.

EA has launched a new mobile games subsidiary called 8lb Gorilla and plans to use it to release 99-cent iPhone games on a near-monthly basis.

According to TouchArcade's coming out report, 8lb Gorilla's first game is Zombies & Me, in which you try and shepherd boggle-headed undead into the path of missiles.

The accompanying video quickly describes the concept: your Gran's in a house, the military is bombarding the area, and by running around outside pursued by zombies you can lure them into the impact zones.

The game's due out "very soon", apparently, and providing there aren't too many hold-ups with the iTunes App Store submission process it should be followed by additional games on a very regular basis.

I've been browsing the app store, and it seems a bit weird to me that there are practically no games (or apps of any kind) that cost more than 6 quid (10 US dollars, presumably).

I wonder if anybody will take the plunge and release a 20 to 30 quid 'AAA' type handheld title?

According to my iTunes Apps tab I now have exactly 100 games for my iTouch. Every single one has cost me 59p.

Now, what I could say to myself is:
I've spent £59 on 100 iTouch games, what a brilliant bargain.

What I actually say to myself is:
I've spent £59 on 100 iTouch games, I am a complete and utter tool.

Itouch games - 5 minutes of fun and then a lifetime of meh.

The problem with releasing higher value games on the app store is that everyone has now been conditioned to expect a lower price point and anything that is out of the norm will be ignore or gets moan at.

@rhubarbandcustard - I agree with you on the whole - apart from Peggle :)

Agree with rhubarb & bluedot. Nobody wants to take the plunge on expensive games because the bar has been set to sub-standard.

I'll add that people are greedy spoiled bastards who think everything should be free.

I paid £2.99 for Edge yesterday, and I'd say it was worth it.

59p games are generally fun but limited - however there are some 'proper' games if you are prepared to splash out.

Let's Golf or Tiger Woods, Real Racing and Zenonia are all excellent value for money if you splash out and I'd also recommend Moonlights, Tiki Towers, Toki Tori and Ragdoll Blast as consistently entertaining cheaper games.

Is this another "there are good games on the App Store" thread? Okay, then.

Pinball Dreams exists in a good conversion, but I am pining for Pinball Fantasies too. Add to that other pinball games like titles form Zen Pinball and the strange-ish Freeballin'.

Tap Tap Revenge 1 and 2 are decent rhythm games, with both free and paid-for tracks.

And I get beaten routinely by Chess O.
