EA on Steam, but so far not in Europe

No immediate word on availability.

Electronic Arts has added several of its games to Steam in the US, but there's no word yet on when the likes of Spore will be available through the service in Europe.

The initial run of EA titles on the US version of the digital distribution channel consists of those two, Spore's Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer Online, Need for Speed Undercover, Mass Effect and FIFA Manager 09.

The publisher also said to expect Mirror's Edge (due out at Euro retail 16th January), Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 and Dead Space "in the coming weeks".

However, despite global publishing exec John Pleasants' observation that EA is "pleased to extend our holiday titles to gamers worldwide via Steam", EA was unable to clarify European timing today.

We've also contacted Valve and expect something official from both companies soon.

Crysis and Warhead were available on the European Steam store ages ago. Have they suddenly disappeared?

"No info on the Euro=Dollar shitstorm currently melting the steam forums?"

+1. What a fucking bunch of wankers. Thank goodness there are still plenty of other ways to get games than through Steam. It amazes me that that club of assholes is capable of creating some of the best games ever.

come on, wheres the news about the issue with steam selling stuff in sterling and euros and the sudden rise in game prices?

or maybe they need to release some character in a funny dress before it becomes newsworthy?

How long before EA just outright buys Valve so it can get its hands on Steam?

Pound goes through the floor and it's Valves fault? Maybe a certain over-spending and over-borrowing government is really to blame?

Still, maybe there is an opportunity for all online software services to adjust their prices. Personally I've been complaining about Adobe for years, for them $1 has always equaled £1.

Seems to be available for "most of Europe" now according to announcement on Steam but doing a search for Mass Effect, Spore and Football Manager 2009 still turns up nothing. I guess "most of Europe" doesn't include the UK.

Crysis+warhead are both still available and have been since their release.

They've even announced it for Europe now, but still nothing here in the UK. Confused about the mention of Football Manager 2009 - it's on there, but it's published by Sega... Also, Crytek themselves are the ones responsible for getting Crysis and Warhead on Steam; the games are distributed to retail through EA Partners, so Crytek are free to make other deals for online distribution (which is exactly how it happens with Valve, of course)

"Most of Europe" is presumably Europe minus the UK?

Goes hand in hand. Apparantly EA's customer service is shit - although I have not experienced it. However I have now experienced steam for the first time on Thursday. I ordered 2 games, one worked and the other does not. I put in my "ticket" question to which I have heard absolutely naff all from them the robbing bastards!!! Despite 4 emails asking fro updates.

So if this is anything to go buy it seems a match made in heaven!

Just because it is on Steam doesn't mean they won't stop using their own DRM.

    Look at Rockstar.

Indeed, really surprised Eurogamer haven't picked up on this, especially as it's a prime example of companys shafting Euro...gamers.

There is a user group on steam called 1€ ≠ 1$ join it to show your support for the Euro=Dollar issue
  • Dan234 #15 3 years ago

Odd how if a company adds support for other currencies apart from their home one they are almost always set at a rate which is favourable for the company.
