EA: NFS series has sold more than 100m News

News by Tom Bramwell

22 October, 2009

EA has announced that the Need for Speed series has sold more than 100 million units since its launch in 1994.

That's according to the publisher's internal estimates, which also suggest the games have generated over $2.7 billion in sales.

To celebrate all this, EA helpfully provided news outlets with some exciting statistics and little-known facts about the Need for Speed series.

Unfortunately we've misplaced those, but we think we can remember some of them off the top of our heads:

  • There have been 15 Need for Speed games released across more than 14 platforms. Yes, they did put "more than 14".
  • If you put all the cars featured in Need for Speed games back to back in a straight line, it would be very long I expect.
  • Thanks to the Need for Speed, hundreds of teenage boys learned how to type "Emmanuelle Vaugier" into Google Image Search.
  • The third Need for Speed game, Hot Pursuit, led to disagreement at developer EA Canada over the use of Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" technique on some of the camber around the twistier mountain roads.
  • And don't forget the lesser-known spin-off, Need for Speedos, a Crazy Taxi-style game where you had to visit all the JD Sports in the city buying swimming trunks.
  • Or the even less successful Need for Paedos.

The latest Need for Speed games are Need for Speed: SHIFT, Need for Speed: NITRO and Need for Speed World Online, a free-to-play online PC version, is due out in autumn 2010.

15 games! None have been worth playing since Hot Pursuit in 1998.

It's a shame it sold so well as it's been bloody awful for years! Still that's the chavs for you ;)

Saying that though I was completely surprised how awesome Shift is and it's on my wanted list. Try it people I know it's NFS but you may even like it!

NFS shift suprised me, it's pretty awesome and probably more *fun* to play than forza 3 based on the demo.

"EA: NFS series has sold more than 100m" - EA laughs tits off while throwing money into the air with gay abandon.

I've enjoyed a few of the NFS games over the years more than others, didn't really like the open world designs. Hot Pursuit is still the daddy though.

Need for Speedos is a good one !
This is a very good way of using a press release without being a PR pawn for EA (or anyone else, for that matter). Well done Mr Bramwell !
For me the series sucked after Porsche Unleashed...

I wonder, how much of that was spent on marketing budgets?

Need for paedos. So wrong. On so many levels. And yet, I still smiled. Then I remembered Vanessa George, and I was a little sick inside. But then still smiled.

"more than 14" platforms.
So, if you're not going to say how many, you may as well say "more than 1".

Did the final sentence of the press release read "Mwahahahahaaaaaaaa"?

Wow. Just googled her. She's hot.

Those are some disgustingly big numbers.

And some lollers factoids. More joke articles, I demand them.

I think the more than 14 refers to whether people count the 3DO as a platform or not.
