EA giving Red Alert 1 away for free News

PC News by Robert Purchese

1 September, 2008

EA is offering the original Red Alert as a free download from the official series website.

Furthermore, anyone pre-ordering Red Alert 3 will be granted access to Red Alert 2 for no extra cost. UK customers can get their hands on these treats through the EA Store or GAME.

Pre-ordering also nets you a DVD that offers more on poster-woman and real-world fighter Gina Carano, a Red Alert retrospective, and sneak peek at some special game-related videos. There's also a bonus map for Red Alert 3 chucked in.

The deals popped up over the weekend to mark the 13th anniversary of Red Alert 1. Just pop over to the official website to start downloading the 500MB Soviet and Allied discs.

Downloading with a view to giving my XP-powered lappy something to do. Imagine the compatibility might be a nightmare even with that, but for FREE, who can complain. Have great memories of Red Alert from when it was released... perhaps they will give us the expansion discs, in time.

I'm definitely going to try this tonight...

LOVED RA1. Still my favourite RTS game, if only for the comedy James Bond units.

Does it require you use the EA downloader? Yes? Forget it then.

Yes, but quite a few of us choose not to.

I for one will be trying this, on both my Q Core Vista Home Premium and the Eee PC 1000H with XP Home tonight. As long as one of them plays it, I'm happy. If both can play it, yay for RA1 Lan games :-D

Is easy to run on XP.

Download, run setup in compatability mode, install patch by copying it across and using the .exe, then running the programme itself in compat. mode also.

Pfft, that's the last time I'm buying a game if they're just going to go and give it away for free!
