EA buys Napster bloke's site News

EA has shelled out USD 30 million to acquire Rupture, a game-focused social networking site made by Napster creator Shawn Fanning.

TechCrunch claims inside knowledge of the deal, and says everything should be signed, sealed, and delivered imminently.

Rupture started out as a World of Warcraft community hub that tracked what your friends were up to in-game: changing equipment, gaining skill points, levelling behind your back, that sort of thing.

It went on to support Team Fortress 2, Madden 08, Halo 3 and Guitar Hero III, but never got out of beta testing and only ever attracted a few users.

EA is said to have snapped it up as a technology purchase, and presumably will be looking to use it with Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

This is the first proper bag of gold Fanning has got his hands on, after he faced numerous lawsuits when Napster hit the headlines all those years ago.

Good job Mr Napster!
I do find myself checking out stats for online games, mainly 360 games. The halo 3 online stats site is very clever and interesting to peruse! Also the GTA4 social club is nice, although a bit buggy at the moment...more gaming stats sites!

Is it just me, or does anybody else find the American fascination with statistics tortuously dull?

It bores the crap out of me... especially when I am being forced to watch one of their 'sporting' events and the monotone, droll, voiceover guy spends literally hours spouting statistical nonsense non stop.

It was a good idea for WoW but Blizzard blitzed the idea by doing their own version which turned out to be much better. $30 million does seem a bit on the expensive side considering what it does, would hope they havent forked out that much money to use it on Warhammer when the servers they use will already have the information needed for the stats.
