E3: Wii Zapper unveiled
Lightgun add-on coming to Wii.
Nintendo is adding The Wii Zapper lightgun to its growing range of first party peripherals for its hugely popular games console.
The Wii Zapper lightgun is billed as "the first offspring of the Wii remote and the Nunchuk" and will house both "like a machine gun."
According to our man at the scene, "the front grip has the Wiimote with trigger and the back one has the Nunchuk with analogue. The Wiimote actually lies across the top of the barrel, with a bigger trigger in the front stick that presumably compresses the Wiimote's "B" button." Curious.
The peripheral will be compatible with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Ghost Squad's we will be getting a hands on with the add-on during E3. Medal of Honour will specifically take advantage of the Zapper, we also learned.
The Zapper will be packaged with its own software to show of its abilities, Nintendo confirmed.
The device will be available in standalone form for USD 19.99. Local pricing was not confirmed.

$20 does seeeeem cheap but bear in mind it's probably little more than an incredibly ergonomically efficient plastic nunchuk holder... i just hope the devlopers do something classy with it and don't get gimmick fever, which is the danger with nintendo hardware these days

This leads me to assume that it's not just a bit of plastic?

You'll be pointing at the ceiling or the floor just to aim properly.
I do like it though.

How so? The pointer is IR based oO

Well I might have got the wrong end of the stick here but, when I hold the wiimote horizontally and point it directly at the TV screen, the cursor appears a few inches beneath where it 'should' be pointing.
Basically, if I strapped a laser pointer to the wiimote, held it horizontally and pointed it at the TV screen, the cursor would appear several inches below the laser dot.
So, based on the above, pointing the 'gun' directly at the TV screen would result in me shooting several inches below where I intended - I'd need to aim slightly to the ceiling to hit the target.
Am I making any sense here ... ?

And if the zapper came with said laser pen to calculate exactly where pointing, etc.. i see no reason why it couldnt be exact.

Though it'd be great if the Wii had TP's calibration as standard.
