E3: Sony unveils Infamous

New IP from Sucker Punch.

Sony eventually got around to exclusive games at its E3 conference earlier today, revealing a new superhero-themed title from Sucker Punch, developers of the Sly Cooper series.

It looks to be a moody third-person action game, which lets you choose your fate as either a hero or a villain brandishing wonderful and powerful abilities. As you grow and either wreak havoc or seek justice, the city and population will evolve around you - depending on the choices you make.

We saw the main character flip over cars, blow things up and fight a robot in the on-stage trailer. It wasn't unlike the action in Crackdown. But that can't be a bad thing.

Infamous is due out in 2008. Expect a trailer and screenshots to be released in the next day or so at E3.

I've always thought Sly Cooper and Sucker Punch are highly underrated - good to see them start another new IP on PS3, which due to the nature of the game should get a fair bit of marketing. Also, it's nice to hear that for once we can choose which side of the law we side with :)

However, after really enjoying the platforming elements of Sly, I feel they would do well to lend their talents to a 'grown-up' platformer, like PoP.

    There is the trailer here:

would expect more hi-quality to come, though.

Great news. Insomniac and Sucker Punch ended up my favourite devs on the PS2 (they made the most games that I considered keepers). Now all I need is an announcement of a new Klonoa, and I'll buy me a PS3.

    This looks really cool.

Interesting trailer, thanks agparrot - the game's going to be quite fantasy-like, then.

Obviously more than a few elements of Crackdown, too. Definitely one to watch for PS3 owners over the next 12 - 18 months.

Only thing that ties it to Crackdown is the camera view, ability to destroy stuff and grow your abilities. Other than that it looked very different in the trailer. Although, Phil Harrison did mention "sandbox" in his speech.

It's the PS3 version of crackdown. The city looks a lot worse though. In their rush to create "atmostphere" they seem to be loosing track of the fun factor. The trailer looked god awful and the chracters looked PS2 standard.

Still crackdown was great fun so I'll keep an open mind.

EDIT: My bloomin keyboard seems on it's last legs

Because the quality was so great. If you'd have seen the full sized pic you wouldn't be sayig that.

Some of us were gabbling away during the conference - when we got to see the trailer I linked earlier.... The protagonist and some of the crazy things he does gave off a bit of a PsiOps / Second Sight vibe, really, although it was hard to tell who or what was generating which special effects in the Trailer, and I imagine it is probably absolutely ages away from being released.

penhalion is a boring, bitter guy who thinks he's a game developer. That's all I wanted to say.

Looks like what Crackdown should have been!

That would've been something. Complete with the Dali set-pieces. I guess EA has the rights to that IP :)

Great idea - take a developer who makes excellent family friendly platform games, and get them to do something "grown up". Your console definitely needs more "grown up" games, and fewer great platformers.

It's almost as if they don't realise what made the PS1 and PS2 so popular.

Each episode of Sly Cooper sold approx 1m units worldwide. The PS2 has sold 118m units worldwide. So I don't think it was Sly that made the PS2 so popular somehow.

But regardless, this gives something for SP to develop while the price of the PS3 is still high, they can make a Sly game later on when the price is more family-friendly.

Not a sandbox game by the time of release then?

    Nowt like bald bating :/

I REALLY liked that. :D Because, this guy has these superpowers, sure, but then, what does he use them for, and why? This appears to be a bit more about the character and his motivations than Crackdown, where fun as it is, you just find things and eliminate other things, with narrative taking a definite back-seat. He seems possibly quite distant (he's being referred to in the third-person) gives off, perhaps, a Crow vibe?

First impressions were Crackdown meets Psi-Ops. Which is no bad thing at all.
