E3: Sony reveals echochrono for PSP News

PSP News by Robert Purchese

3 June, 2009

Sony has whipped the wrappers off of echochrono (working title) for PSP, a brand new spin-off of echochrome - the Escher-like puzzler where shifting perspectives make minds melt.

Echochrono's based around the same idea, but introduces the "new" concept of self co-op, which entails working with your own ghosts to clear a level. That means added puzzle mechanics that can't be solved alone; moving objects, doors with switches and crumbling floors all get a mention.

Each time a level is restarted a new ghost appears, and there are around 30 puzzle types to conquer. Action will be spread over nine themed worlds and there will be around 45 levels, with more added later as DLC through PSN.

The first batch of echochrono shots show a coloured world that appears to be two-dimensional, and not a rotating 3D affair like before.

Echochrono is due out this autumn/winter.

It's a Braid clone.

Nothing wrong with that, I'll just enjoy it for what it is.

Each time a level is restarted a new ghost appears...

Interesting use of irreversibility here.

I nearly bought echochrome for the look. Someone then decided that the box should be covered with all sorts of colours and people. I lost all will to buy it when I saw that. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this, as I quite like time-based puzzles.

there was probably a hot checkout girl, and he didn't fancy buying a game with a rainbow on the front.

How is echochrome like Braid exactly? Braid itself is a melting pot of influences that is wears proudly on its sleeve no?

Can someone please ask Sony the burning question: Will all these games be available on BOTH download and UMD, or are they already thinking of shafting the current PSP owners?

This is the MOST important question that a games press organisation could ever ask Sony right now...

raion has it right.

It's like cursor*10. The whole concept of cursor*10 is to walk through the same level with different instances of yourself.

In Braid it's just one of the elements.

zedzee: How the heck are they shafting current PSP owners when they can download any title just as well as PSP go owners will in the future.

PSP 1000 to 3000 can use UMDs AND the downloadable titles.

This seems to be a common misconception. Either Sony are doing a poor job explaining things, or people are just looking for a reason to slag them. Probably both.

This game _does_ look like Exit. The mechanics could be very different, though.
