E3: Scene It? for 360

Quiz with Buzz-like buzzer.

Microsoft's E3 conference earlier this morning gave confirmation of an Xbox 360-exclusive version of the popular quiz game Scene It?, and gave a first look at the first-party controller specifically designed for it.

The peripheral has a series of coloured buttons for answering questions and a big red button for "buzzing" in. A cynic would claim the device bears more than a passing similarity to Relentless' Buzz controller, but we certainly wouldn't. Because we're nice like that.

Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action will come complete with four of the buzzers and over 1800 questions based on images, audio clips and snippets of films we know and love. And Microsoft plans to keep things fresh by offering downloadable content in the future.

Among the five new puzzle types in the 360 game are Credit Roll, where you'll have to guess the movie using the list of cast and characters; Child's Play, which presents you with a child's drawing of a scene; and Quotables, where you'll have to finish a line from a famous flick.

Screenlife will be developing it, and is responsible for shifting over 10 million copies of the Scene It? DVD game from which the inspiration came.

Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action will be available this Christmas period.

MS need more of this sort of thing, but I'd take Buzz! over it any day.

Buzz! is the first time a trivia videogame has been done so damn right, whether you like it or not.
  • tobi #2 5 years ago

they didn't even try to disguise it.
  • richardiox #3 5 years ago

    Killzone killer this.
  • Dizzy #4 5 years ago

Oh god.. I always shudder when reminded that some people play stuff like this

"Oh god.. I always shudder when reminded that some people play stuff like this"

Why? Because they're not good enough to be part of the hardcore 'gaming elite'?

    What arrogant bullshit.

Everybody yelled "RIP-OFF" when Sony showed of the Sixaxis... wonder how this will be recieved?

Or is it ok to steal from Sony?
  • Ihya #7 5 years ago

One of the more shameless ripoffs I've seen to date.

That's an open goal for Sony to poke fun at later on today!

I agree... notice the MS guy said "our version" when he presented SceneIt... ups!
  • lazygamer #9 5 years ago

And there was me thinking "it'd be cool if microsoft brought out something similar to Buzz".

They didn't have to make it look THAT similar!

We seem to have a large cynic contingent in today. Or they may just be Sony f****ys
  • DB2k #10 5 years ago

@biker_bob.. what are you gibbering about? All MS peripherals are very well made imo - controllers, keyboards, mice the lot. It's just the 360 itself which has documented reliability issues (although mines been fine since day 1).
  • Arwin #11 5 years ago

Right now I don't think it is as good as the Buzz controller, even, simply because the broad bars work a lot better than the small round buttons on the MS controller. They should at least make the big round red button a trackball, then we'd have something interesting. ;)

Oh and I love Buzz. It's a great party game that everybody loves!

I thought Buzz was made by a third party and not Sony.
  • Dizzy #13 5 years ago

"Why? Because they're not good enough to be part of the hardcore 'gaming elite'? "

No because you play games like this without a console or a PC IMHO.
  • Monkey_Puncher #14 5 years ago

I think Sony own the company that make Buzz. Not that it really matters, Sony didn't invent game shows and buzzers so all this yelling of "RIP OFF!!" is just from angry Sony boys who seem to be popping up in every Microsoft press conference news story to attempt to find fault in it.

Console developers have been copying each other for years, heck Sony and Microsoft wouldn't be in this business if it wasn't for Nintendo and other companies like them. Sony's 6 axis received so much abuse though as it did seem like a weak sauce last minute knock off of the Wii controller, heck a lot of developers on Playstation hadn't even heard about it at last E3's show.
  • SpeedyThing #15 5 years ago

Actually Relentless are the developer and Sony are the publisher. Relentless isn't owned by Sony but Sony (by being the publisher) own the rights to the Buzz! franchise.

    Well, your name is biker_bob.

Gentle for you probably means only running over it a couple of times on your bike.

But the previous guy's words are truer than yours - Microsoft hardware (controllers, joysticks [especially the Sidewinder], mice and keyboards) have always had excellent reliability and durability.

But you do hate MS (probably felt dirty and needed a shower the first time you saw a BBOD), so I guess we can just write you off..... :-)

I lost my 360 two weeks ago on a Wednesday evening. Took it straight to Game on the Friday afternoon, got a quick replacement.

Friend at work got RROD on his launch 360 last month - sent it off on a Monday, got it back on a Thursday. No charge, now all good.

Sorry to hear about your refurb crapness, but now you should be getting your old 360 back instead of a different one. And they promise to have fixed the problems, so the 'refurb hell cycle' should be over.

And I always recommend going to the retailer instead of the manufacturer - much easier to argue with a pimply-faced manager in person rather than a pimply-faced customer services manager over the phone.

Not being disrespectful, just that almost every one of your posts that I've read has been critical of MS for no reason OTHER than it's MS. Will google through them in a mo....
  • Beano #18 5 years ago

@Monkey_Puncher: You sound like one of those people blaiming Sony for ripping Nintendo & MS off and now defending MS... very amusing.

Yes, Sony doesn't own rights for buzzers or game-show games, but this is a it's very clear Buzz rip-off. Especially when the MS representative accidentally called it "our version". Common!
  • DB2k #19 5 years ago

hehe maybe the biker is the problem then. considered that ? :)
    use less force..

I have had 3 keyboards, 4 xbox controllers, 2 headsets, 2 360 controllers, 1 headset, 4 mice.. no problems whatsoever.
  • ToAks #20 5 years ago

they should have fixed what was wrong with the buzz controllers, the buzz controller should have diffrent height for the colored buttons so u dont have to look down so much.
  • jaxon58 #21 5 years ago

Surprise they didn't grab the 'You Don't Know Jack' license too. It's crying out to be remade!
  • freedumb #22 5 years ago

Sony didn't rip off the wii. Nintendo just forced their hand in coming up with their own equivalent to counter it. They own a patent for that sort of device form 1995, and the eye-toy was just testing the waters.
  • DanWhitehead #23 5 years ago

"Our version" is obviously referring to the current, DVD version of the game.

That was my first thought. While Microsoft's need for a quiz franchise is clearly, ahem, inspired by Buzz, the SceneIt range is well established in the DVD game market.

And, really, is this any different to different companies making racing games, or platform games? The trivia quiz is a genre, not a trademarked concept.
  • crazyhorse174 #24 5 years ago

Does it really matter if its a rip-off??
  • Beano #25 5 years ago

Did it matter to the Sony haters when Sony showed the Sixaxis?

    No and yes.
  • bioreit #26 5 years ago

    @ Beano.

"Did it matter to the Sony haters when Sony showed the Sixaxis?

    No and yes. "

Good point. But then, surely, by ripping on MS for 'stealing' the idea, people are putting themselves forward as 'MS haters'?
  • Beano #27 5 years ago

Absolutely - I'm just calling for balanced media coverage and people to remember this the next time Sony "steals" something.

I'm a 360+PS3+Wii owner myself and do not hate MS, but the Sony-hate have been very one-sided over the last year or so.
  • Psychotext #28 5 years ago

Rip off, but welcome to the business - it's how it works.
  • bioreit #29 5 years ago

But haven't you heard - it's FUN to point out Sony's mistakes!

To be fair, I've joined in on occasion - but only when Sony takes a well-aimed shotgun to their own delicate toes.

Overall, I'll always prefer to see balance and you're right - 360 fanboys seem more vocal than their Sony counterparts.
  • DB2k #30 5 years ago

I don't love mircosoft.. it's just nothing I've owned from them has gone wrong.
Hardware wise anyway.. not counting Windows here..

Does your missus have "FIST OF STEEL" ?
  • onyx_elite #31 5 years ago

I think it's childish to describe one of microsoft's first forays into casual gaming as a Sony rip-off. Why shouldn't 360 owners have the opportunity to play these kinds of games?

Furthermore, the Sixaxis WAS a shameless rip-off because after a controller that looked like a sex-aid they shuffle out the same old shit as before with motion-sensor (Wii) and a guide button (360).
  • captainrentboy #32 5 years ago

Haha, I'm literally the only one here excited about playing Scene-It on the 360 :)
I fooking love the board game, got the add on packs too, I suppose the game's only fun if you're a particularly big movie fan though.
I'm hoping it'll all be a smoother experience on the 360 though, as the dvd that comes with the board game can be a pain in the tits, and there's A LOT of repeats in the questions.
Online play would be a cool addition too.
    Definite purchase for me.
  • SeesThroughAll #33 5 years ago

Yes, it is a shameless ripoff of Buzz. But companies copy each other, what's so horrible about that?
This just showed lack of imagination for one game. And of a very weak "genre" at that.

I never understood the appeal of Buzz! to begin with, so... whatever...
