E3: Rockstar's Agent is "genre-defining" News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

4 June, 2009

Rockstar's PS3 espionage game Agent will show us "a whole new way of experiencing videogames", according parent company Take-Two.

"The game, like anything from Rockstar North, is going to be very, very cool. It's going to push the edge, it's going to be genre-defining and it's going to be a whole new way of experiencing videogames that we haven't really seen before," Take-Two boss Ben Feder told GamesIndustry.biz.

"They're the best development team on the planet," he added.

Agent, set in the "shadowy world of espionage and assassins in the darkest hours of the 1970s", will be exclusive to PS3. Feder said the platform "better suited" the game, but added that "good business relationships" and the full support of a company he has "a lot of respect for" also factored in the decision.

"Exclusives do work when you weigh up the pros and the cons, the positives and the negatives of doing an exclusive, they work even at this stage of the console cycle," said Feder.

"The trade-offs are that on the one hand if you don't go exclusive you get access to a much larger installed base but if you do go exclusive you get the support of first-party publishers in a way that you wouldn't normally expect to."

Heh, euphemism for 'Sony paid us loads of money for this'. Nothing wrong with that, just say it!

Sounds like it's going to be a ratings-friendly manhunt reskin to me.

So in reality its going to be a GTA4 clone but you play as Bond instead of some ethnic minority?

The premise sounds cool, but seen nothing of it as of yet so i'll hold off on salivating for now.
Didnt expect the ps3 to get an exclusive at this stage of the game tho.

All the support from first party publishers with this exclusive only bodes well for future games on the ps3.

So I assume L.A. Noire, once a multi platform, has become Agent, a PS3 exclusive?
Or does L.A. Noire still exist?

L.A. Noire is being developed by Team Bondi in Australia, not Rockstar North who are developing this game.

Sounds like a mixture of Mafia and Splinter Cell and/or Assassin's Creed. Colour me tempted.

It does sound cool but it's hard to get overly excited when there's nothing to see yet.

Bit too much emphasis on the exclusivity issue... does he sound worried/nervous to anyone else....?

As long as it doesn't feature too much of an open environment at the expense of proper gameplay mechanics I might be interested ... a bit...

It may be that I'm too much of an idealist, but I do think that, regardless of whoever does it, bribing for exclusivity is bribing, period.

ON-TOPIC: A cold war spy game does sound good, and doesn't seem like something that has been done properly before. Of course, the spy genre I'm referring to would be the kind of scenario that John Le Carre or Graham Greene comes up with rather than something by Ian Fleming.

I wonder what motivated them to make it a ps3 exclusive. I remember MS shelling out 60 million for creating just 3 DLC episodes for gta 4. It would make more sense for rockstar to ask for another few milion and keep developing for the xbox.

It's pretty baffling, they could go for multi platform too..

oh well, I own a ps3, and exclusives tend to blow the x360 games away in terms of graphics, so I'm happy:D

The Last Guardian is the BBC game as mentioned above, the trailer shown at E3 this year is quite old, expect lots more surprises from the game when it launches in 2017...:)

Hey guys I just baked the best most awesome cake in the world but I'm not going to let you have a piece or even show it to your or even let you smell it's goodness, but trust me, it's a good cake

More like: "we just came up the best cake recipe in the world, Gordon Ramsey has paid us pots of cash to have it exclusive in his restaurants (and he'll show us how to use our ovens better), but we're not going to tell you whats in it yet because everyone will start making their own cakes with the same ingredients".

lmfao XD

Have to also laugh remembering at that morron from Sony during the GTTV interview, that he brought up Agent as the best exclusives for PS3 yet he didnt even know the genre or anything at ALL about the game.. lol Its plain stupid.

So, all we know about Agent is that its... something "refreshing" is all they have promised practically as news? oO hmm I rather stick with Conviction and Assassin's Creed 2 that we know they are awesome so far. Fuck knows when Agent would even come out other than the fact we dont know wtf it is!
