E3: New Telltale series is Monkey Island News

PC Xbox 360 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

1 June, 2009

LucasArts has revealed a brand new episode Monkey Island series for PC and WiiWare, plus a "completely re-imagined" version of The Secret of Monkey Island for Xbox Live Arcade and PC - as the German ratings board USK predicted.

Also, buried deep in the announcement, is a reminder that Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992) will be an unlockable bonus in the Wii version of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings.

The Tales of Monkey Island episodic series will be developed by Sam & Max, Strong Bad and Wallace & Gromit maker Telltale Inc. This, then, must have been the E3 announcement the studio teased in May.

We're to get one of five Tales of Monkey Island episodes each month, with the series to begin in "just a few short weeks".

These will follow brand new adventures of Guybrush Threepwood who, whilst battling his old nemesis LeChuck, accidentally releases a voodoo pox that threatens to turn all of the pirates of the Caribbean into monsters.

There's no mention of Tim Schafer of any of the original team being involved, but we are promised the humour, romance and swashbuckling that made Monkey Island a beloved adventure.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition for XBLA and PC will arrive "later in the summer" and features updated high-definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score and full voice-over on top of the iconic 1990 adventure game.

The statement finishes with by announcing that, "These efforts are just the start of LucasArts' new mission to revitalize [sic] its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises."

SO sold. Or purchased. Or some other snappy thing that means I will buy this.

And I f*cking hate the myth that is retro gaming too. Even I have a meltable [sic] heart sometimes I guess :)

Great news, just wish Fate of Atlantis was available on its own, or with the PSP version of the forthcoming Indiana Jones game, btw the last line about going back to its glory days is very promising but I hope LucasArts will also consider that one of the resons LucasArts adventure games were so loved is because they never got bogged down in one franchise but were always prepared to take risks on new games.

FFS Eurogamer, do your homework. A good chunk of the original team is there, including the man who co-wrote it, Dave Grossman. It wasn't just Schafer behind Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle.

Also Chuck Jordan, who co-wrote Curse of Monkey Island, is working on it.

If they're releasing for the Wii then I hope they sort out the performance issues that Sam & Max had. Good news though, hope we get more Grim Fandango next.

The re-fit is as good as purchased... IF they've stayed faithful to the original.

Got Dominic Armato to do Guybrush again? Would seem weird without that voice now...

Yeah, come on guys... Dave Grossman... Chuck Jordan... Remastered Michael Land score... Steve Purcell's involved with the Telltale team... This sounds VERY VERY promising. I hope they can re-do the other "proper" sequel and the excellent CMI as well. Maybe throw in some other Lucasarts classics... Ram it to the dicks currently making Star Wars crap... All they need now is Ron Gilbert!

Cool! Though didnt imagine Lucasarts not going to make it a multi platform one, it is but not including PS3? That like cutting 30 percent or so of potential income? As consoles are where the money at these days?

However I m sure gamers delighted that its ll come to PC as well though, as its the true home of the series! I remember very fondly Guybrush on my Amiga/PC!

Even better. The special edition is LITERALLY layered over the original game, so you can switch back and forth between them while playing.

Check out this video to see it in action.

don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy that this new studio is devoting itself to bring back adventure games, but it's offers are just adequate so far.

@raion

The project lead is Dave Grossman who was one of the original 3 main monkey island guys. They brainstormed it with the rest of the team. Original music by Michael Land. Dominic Armato on board. Many of the team worked at LEC in their heyday, some of them on previous MI games. Some of the people now working at telltale are the same monkey island fanboys that sat in the unofficial IRC channel (that still exists) over 10 years ago chatting excitedly about the new games coming out. I have had my reservations about some of TTG's output in the past but know this: if anyone can do monkey island justice at the moment, it's Telltale. That is a reason to be excited.

I'm all for having people new to gaming experience Monkey Island. It was great back in the day. Don't think I will replay it though TBH. I don't think I've ever played a game more than once. I buy too many games and have too little time...
