E3: New Front Mission unveiled

In goes action, out go turns.

Square Enix has whipped the wrappers off a brand new Front Mission Evolved game for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Silent Hill: Homecoming developer Double Helix Games will create, and re-focus the instalment on third-person action rather than turn-based strategy. The brilliantly named Wanzers (from the German "Wanderung Panzer" or walking tanks) will return, and do battle offline as part of a campaign as well as online against friends.

There's no date linked to the project, but there is a CGI teaser video to watch.

ugh i guess this will turn in to some sort of Armored Core type crap :(

unless it turns in to a mechwarrior style game, which would be cool, i wish ms would bring the MW series

You bastards. The turn-based nature made the old ones less generic.

Surely a Valkyrie Chronicles system would be a better fit, and satisfy both turn based and real-time afficianadoes?

Man I loved the strategy and story of Front Mission III.
So stupid to cut out exactly the best part of the game. We have seen enough shooters, SquareEnix, bring us some good strategy games. You used to be so good at it (FF Tactics).

SquareEnix is going to land flat with their new "western" way. It's just not gonna work.

I used to be such a big Squaresoft fan by the days. Bought every SNES game with their label on it...
It's just so sad to see them ruin every good IP they had.

    RIP Front Mission

Surely moving Front Mission to an action game rather than a turn-based strategy just competes needlessly with Armoured Core in what is already quite a niche genre?

I haven't played a Front Mission game before, but I had heard good things about them, and if this had been a strategy/RPG type thing like the previous games I would have been very interested. As it stands, it's going to take a lot of good reviews before I'd even pay any attention to it.

Probably it went like that at the SquareEnix meeting:

CEO: "We need to sell more games in the West!"

    ASSISTANT: "Western people love FPS!"

CEO: "Great! Let's take a franchise and make a FPS out of it! Take Front Mission for example!$$$"

ASSISTANT: "Oh yeah, and I heard Microsoft will pay 50 millions for an exclusivity!"

CEO: "WTF! Are they crazy or just stupid? Why do they need another FPS on the 360? Not my problem....$$$$"

ASSISTANT: "We make a cheap FPS on an old engine, get extra cash from Microsoft...and bingo!! $$$ And by the way we could also make a FinalFantasyDragonQuest-FPS! I heard Nokia would pay billions if we published it only on the N-Gage!"

    CEO: "WTF!!! Let's do it!"

So not a Front Mission game then really?

Damn my hopes were built up when i read the title that this was a prober new front mission.

Im not going to dismiss it just yet as the snes action front mission(cant rember the name but i think it was only released in japan) was pretty good as far i rember, but then again things have changed a lot since those day.

Double Helix seem to be the guys you go to if you want to ruin your franchises.

Hmm... interesting. I really loved Front Mission 3 and 4 but never really got into 5. I might brush it off and give it another go in light of this news.

Konami screwed up Silent Hill, not Team Silent (though I thought SH4 had one of the better storylines). Double Helix had creative freedom and they chose to make Homecoming a 3rd person action game and a bad one at that. It was terrible not only as a Silent Hill game but as an action game in general. I don't hold out much hope (if any) that they will generate interest in Front Mission as a series or its genre if they change it. Did Resident Evil 4 generate interest for Survival Horrors? No... and then we got Resi 5 (which I'll admit I like).
