E3: MGS: Rising for PC, PS3, 360 News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

4 June, 2009

Konami has confirmed Metal Gear Solid: Rising for simultaneous release on PC, PS3 and 360.

The announcement settles exclusivity issues - started by an Xbox 360 unveiling during the Microsoft E3 conference.

Hideo Kojima, creator of MGS, will not take charge of Rising. He told a Konami press conference audience that "up-and-coming young bloods" will boss development, but will retain the "stealth espionage" feel.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising stars Raiden and not Solid Snake as the main character. Raiden is part robot, like Robocop, and is capable of very flash gymnastics. [He is not like Robocop. - Ed]

Head over to Eurogamer TV for the Metal Gear Solid: Rising teaser.

It was never said that it was EXCLUSIVE during the MS conference, get your facts straight. Don would have rubbed it in our face the entire time otherwise. It was quite obvious. Eitherway, never liked the MGS games to be honest.

Nice that it's coming to a number of formats. That means I can choose the version that suits me best... probably the PS3 as that is the true home of the MGS series for me and it'll only come on a single disc.

Really couldn't care less which platforms the overhyped, bloated FMV-fest MGS comes on nor who's creating it

@ alimokrane: To be fair, EG didn't claim that it was MS who said anything. The confusion just came from a mix of ambiguous language (not uncommon in press conferences) and anxious fans.

Couldn't agree more - this IP is total crap!

The last one was hyped up so much - I bought it and played it for a total of 1 hour before becoming so mind-numbingly bored that I went into a coma - I have only just recovered and have since played proper games like COD5 , Gears2 and Infamous. I'll never understand the attraction of MGS - Splinter Cell is a much better 'sneak about' game anyway.

Aha, but Splinter Cell doesn't have 1 hour long cut-scenes now, does it? Wait that didn't come out right ...

I wonder if, since it's not directed by Kojima, this MGS may be free of the cutscene obsession, and even worse, hours of pointless codec voice-chat and we just get a polished action stealth game, instead of the gaming marmite Kojima has been dishing up since MGS2.

mgs4 does not have a 1hour cut scene... and install>multiple disc anyday...

Also, this is probably going to be action oriented, and not like the rest of mgs, therefore i doubt it will be that great.

"mgs4 does not have a 1hour cut scene"

What's the percentage of cutscene to gameplay? 80:20 or more?

"install>multiple disc"

Choice > forced install

"Also, this is probably going to be action oriented, and not like the rest of mgs, therefore i doubt it will be that great"

No, it's stealth espionage, just like MGS4.

The reason you say it won't be great is because it's no longer a PS3 exclusive, and no other reason. There's no point in stealth fanboyism. You are not even vaguely subtle in your allegiance, so you may as well just come out and show your colors.

The way in which the story and cutscenes constantly mock the game and the gamer are what makes MGS great. Without them the games would be soulless and boring.

It's a shame Hideo is abandoning this for another game set in the MGS universe. I'd rather see him turn his mind to new IP.

Much much less, but what's your point? There was enough gameplay and it was all awesome.
zepekit's point there was that there are no 1 hour cutscenes, and he's absolutely correct.

"Choice > forced install "
The multiple install thing kind of sucked in MGS4, but that's just a very minor complaint. In the context of the whole experience of that game, it's easily forgotten.

Anyway, I'll keep my eye out on this one. It might still be great despite Kojima not being part of it, and who knows, a bit of fresh air even might do the franchise some good.
I've been following the series from day 1, and love it or hate it, but nobody can deny every single one of them is a stellar achievement.

are there really no one hour cutscenes?

some of them drag on for absolutely fucking ages and don't allow you save until you've sat there for 30 minutes or so

I like cutscenes in general but the ones in MGS4 were ridiculously and needlessly boated and far outnumbered the amount of time spent actually playing the game

still loved it though

No, I timed the final cutscene (which is by far the longest) and that's about 45 minutes (including end credits iirc).

I have to agree I also felt the cutscenes in MGS4 could have benefitted from some trimming, but I still couldn't help loving the overal experience. And you could always skip them...

I confess to not actually timing the cutscenes nor the codec-bits, so shame on me. Did feel like that some times, especially the codec-bits. But ...
I did say that my comment didn't come out right, cause it sounded like I didn't enjoy MGS 4, which I did. Not all of it (liked MGS 3 more) but yeah.

Skipping the cutscenes? Well you could I guess, but then you really should consider spending your money elsewhere. imho.

I will buy both new ones, cause I just have to know what happens. I've been playing Metal Gear since the days of MSX and they have always been truly unique gaming experiences. There's just nothing like it.

I have to admit MGS4 is not my favourite part too. Awesome, but not the best.

hehe, true.
But you can, and what'll be left is still a good gaming experience.

Maybe this will explain more about what happened in between MGS2 and MGS4. 4 was a pretty sweet game, but the story was ridiculous and made no sense at all (yes, I realize the same could be said about the previous games) so I'm kind of glad that Kojima won't be working on this one.

I kinda feel sorry for Kojima, the bile he received from hyperactive gamers on his blog was obscene. I'm looking forward to the game and am very eager to see the next generation of developers that Konami have coming through. I find it interesting that Big Boss has been relegated to the PSP with Raiden getting star treatment but I think the series needs freshening up.

Would have preferred to have seen a Snatcher reboot or maybe a Metal Gear through the eyes of Meryl. Maybe next time.

Does MGS take advantage of shadows and lighting yet?

Maybe it started to in 4? Didn't play it.
