E3: MGS PSone for PSN this month

Snakes and leaderboards.

Konami will release the original Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation Network on 18th June.

The PSone port will cost USD 9.99, although there's no indication of price nor date for Europe. We'll sneak around and check.

This follows announcements for two new Metal Gear Solid games - Rising on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and Peace Walker on PSP - as well as the re-release of Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation Store.

Someone's been busy, as have we - rushing around E3 desperately trying to stuff our E3 index with as much content as possible. And there's plenty more still to come!

Opening this up to the masses since I can't get an answer: any advantage of getting the US PSN releases over the UK ones? Is the old "NTSC releases have no borders and run faster" thing still applicable?
  • andywilkie35 #2 3 years ago

Sold! I replay all the MGS games at least once a year so my next playthrough will be on the PSP

    @widge

Sony doesn't touch the PS1 titles at all so if the NTSC rule applied back in 97 it still applies now.

Kinda getting annoyed at being told what others are getting TBH. If Sony can't be bothered with the "Euro" part of gamer don't give 'em the exposure EG.

That's what annoyed me about E3 alll this media on PSN they were hyping and we don't get half of it. sod off Sony until you get your act together.

Hmmm not sure about this one. I much prefer the Twin Snakes version to the original PSOne version.
  • bad09 #6 3 years ago

Never played Twin Snakes but the Mrs got a new cube (after selling a Wii???) a while back so may hunt it down.

Cheers man, I might get my PSone content off the US store.

I still have the PAL version and they seem to run just fine on my PS3 and PSP. No borders and the slowdown isn't that noticeable.

@bad09, the announcement was from Konami.

if i didn't already have it on disc then i would probably buy this.

Its still got the borders apparently. Zoom mode looks different on the NTSC version, more gets cropped!

So its a case of UK PAL = easy to download, nice when zoomed on the PSP. US NTSC = 14%-ish faster, no borders so nicer looking on PS3.

I reckon I'm going NTSC for my PSone stuff as its nice that it practically fits my LCD with a brief tweak. I did FF7 using fatscreen already on CFW so not too big a bind. Would be nice if the zoom modes on the PSP were Original, Normal, Zoom-PAL, Zoom-NTSC, Full.

I bought this on disc just yesterday. My usual luck.

Oh well, I only paid 15€, and I've got no interest in playing it on the PSP anyway, so it's fine. And at least I'll get the SH demo, lol.

I wonder how the Psycho Mantis bit will work on a PSP?
  • monkeylite #14 3 years ago

@Fladge You can change virtual controller port via the Home button.

@bad09 > what's the problem if you can get those games from us or jap stores ?
  • Silverman #16 3 years ago

How do you get past the section where you had to call a frequency on the codec, which was written on the game cover? I hope they remember to post the code somewhere.
  • dadrester #17 3 years ago

    140.15

can't believe is still know it off by heart :D
  • TheVoice #18 3 years ago

@Silverman: They'll probably put it in the Game Manual option on the menu that appears when you press the PS button in-game.

With this obviously not having two discs, it's a shame it'll lose that epic bit where you head into the blast furnace entrance and tink you're getting the Game Over screen. First time that appeared I started wondering what I'd done wrong.

I did not play the game so I can only assume you're talking about the screen telling you to insert the next disc, which in this case looks like a game-over screen?

In that case you will get it. You will then have to press the home/ps button and select the option to switch discs.

FFVII is one big file, but the 3 discs are still there. And you still have to switch them manually. Pretty authentic experience, if fact :-D

The number IS pretty easy to remember, though ;-)

Shouldn't have to. Out of curiosity though how do you buy off a dodgy account? I have one but can't buy stuff, I thought the card had to be from the states?
  • consignia #22 3 years ago

While it is nice getting stuff like this (and who knows I snapped up FF7), it would be nice to see some of the rarer gems being put up on the PSN. MGS is all well and good, but I already have it.
