E3: Left 4 Dead 2 detailed News

PC Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

2 June, 2009

It's coming to PC and Xbox 360 on 17th November, and, thanks to our pals at Rock, Paper, Shotgun, we now know plenty about Left 4 Dead 2.

Valve's second stab (and bludgeon) at the multiplayer zombie FPS spans five new campaigns in the Southern USA, from Savannah to New Orleans, and promises a stronger narrative arc across them as we get to know the four new characters - a high-school football coach, a female cable news reporter, a mechanic and a conman.

L4D2 has all our old Infected friends, along with a bunch of new ones, including the Charger, whose giant mutated arm is good for knocking you through the air, and the Wandering Witch, who still doesn't like to be disturbed, but doesn't exactly help herself by stumbling about in a daze rather than sitting down out of the way.

New melee weapons include the frying pan, chainsaw and axe (slice legs offs!), and there's also a new semi-auto shotgun and sniper rifle, all of which should help push the rank-and-file Infected into nice new ragdoll deaths, including a new hazmat-wearing model who's resistant to fire.

As mentioned last night, Valve's updated the AI director so he has discretion over level layout and weather effects, and also sets bits of the game (including the New Orleans campaign RPS played) in daylight.

Elsewhere, one of the more interesting additions is "gauntlet" moments. In New Orleans' case, you're sent across a long, narrow bridge, terrorised by Infected, leaving you to hop between the roofs of cars and vans at breakneck pace to avoid death.

There's more on the game in a podcast with designer Chet Faliszek, and we'll be taking our own look at it tomorrow.

Going to be awesome. L4D is brilliant anyway, all it needs is new content ^_^

Sweet beans! Not so sure about a conman though.. I liked the idea that they're average people with day to day professions.

That can still handle a variety of weapons on par with any military expert. Oh wait, they’re American aren't they - so forget i said that! :P

More L4D - awesome! :)

Love love love for more L4D -- it's my favourite online game atm.

I hope it's integrated with the first game in some way, would be a shame to split the community and I might be in L4D2 and see buddies in a L4D map and not want to have to quit to go and join them.

They've lost a few fans today (and gained a few, to be fair).

I don't really care so long as they keep randomly cutting the price of games on Steam!

Agreed! Maybe Valve can sweet talk Microsoft into letting them have the ability to run the original L4D maps/characters from the HDD using the L4D2 front end/disc in drive?

You know I was going to bitch about this being only a year, like the little girls on here. Then I actually stepped back and realised how much damn playtime I've had from L4D 1, and decided to be realistic and not bitch.

Would be nice if it could somehow import (or just include) the maps from L4D1. Just to avoid disc swapping.

Charging full price for content which should have been in an expansion or extended patch. Nice one.

Left4Dead was far too lacking in content, think I'll give this one a skip.

Actually sounds like they are making some worthwhile additions here. Longer campaigns and more weapon choice is going to answer alot of the problems people had with the 1st one. I love the 1st one.

And a conman is an everyday person.

To be fair the original was light on content, but the content there gave huge longevity, you can spend hours lost in L4D and it never gets boring! They also gave away some free stuff so buying a new game won't bother me. Can't wait!

May break out the original tonight actually :)

Nice ideas for a sequel but Valve should also really do what they literally promised: providing new weapons, characters, campaigns, movies for the original game. Otherwise we'll really know how much Newell's words are worth...

@sanctusmortis of course i dont hate sequals, I just think this was zombie light... when i play it i do see some excellent posibilities but its just not realised, and from the sound of the follow up, for me it doesnt sound like its going in the direction I like. Thats not a problem for you is it?
