Dungeon Runners opens doors

NCsoft's "sort of free" MMO.

NCsoft's MMO Dungeon Runners has opened its doors to players around the world today, and is free to download and play.

However, if you want to explore more than the trial content you'll have to become a "member" and shell out USD 4.99 a month to do so. But if you do, you'll enjoy the full range of content, as well as log-in queue priority and access to the best items, weapons, and armour.

Dungeon Runners is based around instanced, er, dungeons, which you'll be able to explore on your own or in a party - the latter being the preferred choice. You get to play as either a Fighter, Mage, or Ranger, and advance your powers through a big list of skills that ensure no two people are the same.

It doesn't have the same size or scope as something like Lord of the Rings Online or World of Warcraft, but it's also not supposed to. It's based around fast-paced instanced fun with friends; good old dungeon-plundering for shiny loot.

"Dungeon Runners is a lot of fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It will take players into an action packed-adventure, where they blaze through a maze of dungeons, face fierce monsters and formidable opponents to become a hero," said Stephen Nichols, producer and lead programmer for Dungeon Runners.

"Regardless of if a player pays to be a member or plays for free, Dungeon Runners will deliver more than 200 hours of game play and a continually growing number of missions and quests. It's also designed to appeal to gamers who have limited time to give to a game, although it will also have the content to keep players adventuring for hours at a time."

Head over to the Dungeon Runner's website to download the client and get started.

    I might try this :D

    From their website:

¨Randomly generated dungeons may contain any number of special rooms, different monster encounters and more! Each dungeon is always fresh, providing limitless re-playability.¨

I must say I'm a bit put off by this

Why? Random generated levels are brilliant in Diablo, I don't see why it can't be brilliant here.

Played the beta for some time. The game has potential.. but controls were weak-ish. I will check it out to see how much they have tweaked it.

    "sort of free"

    lmao

So this isn't a game about running a marathon through a dungeon? Disappointing.

Looks nice... kinda like Diablo... might actually try this sooner or later...

I instantly hated it. Nasty interface... piss-poor graphics... really clunky controls. Insta-delete :(

There might well be such a thing as a free lunch, but it's almost certainly a stale botulism ridden sandwich.

Useless people mentioning Diablo make me yearn for something to fill the void in my soul left by lack of a good Diablo or Diablo Clone.

    *sobs*

The interface is HORRIBLE. Very noticable lag between hitting a command and seeing the effects. I dont mind basic graphics if the interface is smooth but jerky interface and basic graphics = no sell for me.

It is amazing that something this basic is not given more attention.

Vandrius: for a really good Diablo clone, I can recommend Titan Quest. I'm currently playing it together with my gf, and we're having a lot of fun with it. Shiny graphics, good interface, and a solid loot/artifact system. One thing it doesn't have is randomly generated levels, so the long-term replayability might not be so good.

Agreed - unless you want to play cheat-free with strangers, Titan Quest absolutely rocks. First game like Diablo 2 that had me addicted like, um, Diablo 2.

The loot in TQ is fantastic. I've got to say it: better than in Diablo 2. You can't beat finding the sword of Damocles and Ulysses' helmet. :)
