Duke Nukem Forever picture released

Brown monsters feature.

3D Realms has offered a Christmas present to the dwindling number of cobweb-covered, long-bearded fans still sat waiting for Duke Nukem Forever: a picture.

You can grab the wallpaper from the 3D Realms site in a variety of big resolutions, or view it at the Duke Nukem gallery.

The picture shows six monsters bearing their teeth, having weapons instead of hands and being brown. We expect gameplay to involve shooting them in the face when the game is released for PC next century.

Oh the irony of this games name!
  • schnide #2 3 years ago

    Piss poor, 3D Realms.

    Piss. Poor.
  • crazyhorse174 #3 3 years ago

Jeezo guys, give us a break. Its actually not a bad screenshot and if it had been for any other game, people would say its not bad, but because its DNF, people decide to slag it off.

    Well done folks, well done.
  • Trane #4 3 years ago

  • LazyDan #5 3 years ago

Seriously though. How can this still be in development?! How many games have been cancelled and game studios shut down since this was announced in what...? 1996? I still remember reading the first prevew of it in PC Gamer back when it was good!
  • kmittal82 #6 3 years ago

Guys... this IS the game. Its a collection of screenshots, being released since '96..
  • miufs #7 3 years ago

WeŽll get another one of these in 10 years from now.

    CanŽt wait!

Oh wait... no need no to wait...

Great, now "wait" just lost its sense as a word... =\

  • Widge #9 3 years ago

To be fair, weren't the duke nukem monsters brown anyway?
  • muters #10 3 years ago

Oh my, those baddies look... generic. More pig cops and They Live lizards, please.
  • PearOfAnguish #11 3 years ago

Oh goodie, more plastic shiny graphics.
  • agparrot #12 3 years ago

  • b00n #13 3 years ago

man, it just seems more and more they're playing us. That game just doesn't exist, they're teasing us with a photoshopped screenie featuring baddies from other games, mixed up.
  • phatb0y #14 3 years ago

'I can't leave my buddy Superfly behind!'

Oops! Wrong massively delayed and ultimately shit game.
  • Guachuguo #15 3 years ago

    Too "Rob Liefeld" for me...

Sure, it will stay Forever i the 90s.
  • rudedudejude #16 3 years ago

Wow, you guys are a right bunch of bitter moaning arsepits.

Just because they're taking their time, give them a break. If I had to make a game it would probably take 10 years as I'm a lazy feck.

    Just be patient, emo-teens.

Most of those look like spruced-up noughties versions of the baddies from DN3D. Which is nice.

    Still think this'll be decent.
  • SliderNL #18 3 years ago

Duke Nukem seems more and more like the old-action actors which he was based on. Like Sylvester Stalone

It looks fine and the monster design is a fine homage of the previous titles. Supposedly the armour plates on the monsters vary between individual monsters and can be shot off, though that might just be the stuff of fevered dreams of the 3DR foras.

We'll see how it plays - eventually. Though I was kinda hoping for a 2008 proper revealing of the game since the christmas 07 teaser there's plenty to play so far. Kings Bounty and Jagged Alliance 2 among them so there's no rush.
  • PearOfAnguish #21 3 years ago

"Wow, you guys are a right bunch of bitter moaning arsepits."

After 10 years and countless teasers and screenshots are you really surprised that people are so cynical?
  • mcwildcard #22 3 years ago

If someone said it was a pic of some new GoW monsters, everybody would be fapping right now.
I think it looks pretty buff, what do you moaners want, monsters in pink lycra or something?!
  • TonyB #23 3 years ago

"... what do you moaners want, monsters in pink lycra ..."

    Yes. Yes I do.
  • wobbly_Bob #24 3 years ago

3d realms are just yankin the nets chain the game doesn't exist - never has and never will
  • riz23 #25 3 years ago

that second picture on that link is alright though
  • MrWonderstuff #26 3 years ago

Why havent they been closed down? I mean where is all the money coming from to fund this?
  • shotgun44 #27 3 years ago

LazyDan, I had the exact same PC Gamer! 1996? Wow... Also that video showed what looked like an awesome game!
  • Krusty #28 3 years ago

Can't believe it took until Riz's post for someone to mention the T&A below!
  • schnide #29 3 years ago

That screenshot is all they have to show for over 10 years of development. That's why people (including me) are hating on this.

I won't bite but I'll nibble. Let's say they are still making this. Let's say it really will come out. If that's true, why not update more often and explain what's taking so long? The number of fans they're alienating with every passing year means even more of an uphill struggle to redeem themselves with hardcore, casual and fanboy gamers alike.

The arrogant line that George Broussard takes each time he opens his mouth only makes think the game really doesn't exist, and that if it does, I want it to fail for all the silent waiting everyone's been made to do. In short, they're squandering their property. That's their right, but it doesn't make sense.

A game engine doesn't have to be that perfect if the underlying game is there.

And this is all from someone who very happily opened his Christmas presents to a copy of DN3D and loved it to death.. the last major Duke Nukem game that is, back in the 1990's.
  • Azazel #30 3 years ago

I hope that the obligatory melee weapon is a daikatana.
  • sh0cked #31 3 years ago

Moaning gamers really get on my nipples!

You all read the article which means you are all interested in the development of the game and I would go as far as saying you will ALL play it (note im not saying BUY). They don't owe you anything and if any of you are stupid enough to think they do please go remove yourselves from the gene pool.

Now .. I aint a big fan of the whole realism thing lots and lots of grey and dirt, but at this point its a screenshot so I can give it the benefit of the doubt and I will still play it even though it has been in development since I was about 10.
  • sneetch #32 3 years ago

Just so nobody is confused here: it is not a screenshot. It's just wallpaper, they may be in game models but it's not a screenshot.

    Oh and...

    @Adam_T

    You're fired. ;)
  • sneetch #33 3 years ago

    @sh0cked
"Moaning gamers really get on my nipples!"

Mine too, often, but not as much as preachy, moaning gamers who are unable to see the irony, though.

Personally I do not care if the game has been in development for 10 years. I only care if the game is a fun and enjoyable experience.
I do believe there is a lot of pressure on 3DR to produce the pinacle of all FPS but for me, I do not have such lofty goals. If 3DR can produce the feel of D3D with more interation with the environment, that would be enough for me.

All this moaning and crying over the game being in development for 10 years just show the character of the people posting. Calling the screen shots crap but those same people go ape ship over Killzone 2 screens seems ironic. In the end, I just hope DNF can get a fair review without judging the game on how long it was in development.

For a game that was long in development and delivered, you only have to look to Half Life 2

Duke nukem has gone through almost as many regenerations as dr who, but at least you can watch that on the telly.

After such a lengthy development, either get something out the door or move on as the number of people looking forward to this has got to have gone down since it was first released (in context,my nephew was not even conceived when this was first mentioned and he is now in his first year of senior school...no game should be that lengthy in development)

Over the years, I have had more fun reading comments about this vapourware than I imagine the game will actually be to play.
  • evilboo #37 3 years ago

it is fun to have a game that never comes out.

it is a piss take to wind people up and it works.
  • a8a #38 3 years ago

Ok, as to the HL2 comment - it was a year late, and received a TON of coverage because of a few reasons.

    1) They just denied that it was unfinished... all the way up to the point where it was supposed to be released.
    2) They had a rather highly publicised deal with ATI to ship with a graphics card... which made it a problem that they were so late
    3) They used a source code leak to try and cover over the fact that the game was nowhere near ready

These things contributed to what was already a pretty high profile release, and put a lot of expectations on HL2. But the fact remains that it was only a year late.

DNF was officially announced in April 1997. That was eleven and a half years ago, and we still have no release date, no gameplay footage. Just a render of Duke with some new bump maps and... this. People cant honestly still be making apologies for this - its not a game, its a running joke. Sure, if it comes out and its good, Ill play it, but there cant possibly be people waiting on this or "looking forward" to this. That's bordering on religious devotion by now. And if there are such people, then nothing short of the second coming of Jesus Christ is likely to placate them when it is released. So I don't believe what we're seeing here is moaning, I think it's people commenting on a rather good joke and/or hoax.

Also, I understand that they can carry on making DNF... well, forever - because they are doing it on their own cash. I believe that their agreement with Take Two is that there are no milestones, no release dates - and no cash until its gone gold.
  • convercide #39 3 years ago

    I'm looking forward to this.
  • BonzoBanana #40 3 years ago

Nice monsters but I won't believe there is a game until the main gaming websites say so. When I see there is actually a game I might consider buying it but for the moment its absolutely pointless. Maybe in a few years I'll by buying this for my Wii 3.
  • matrim83 #41 3 years ago

Entire economies are in recession. EA has to lay off 1000 people. FR closes.

And 3D realms still have money to keep going with DNF.

    WTF?

  • Nikanoru #42 3 years ago

I had to look real hard to recognise a pig cop in there. Why the hell does everything have to look so goddamn painfully generic, like Gears.
  • whome #43 3 years ago

    blah blah blah....

you'll all buy it when it's released.
  • Shonuff #44 3 years ago

Looks like gears of war kinda.
  • BonzoBanana #45 3 years ago

Maybe the 3d realms team just took the profits from their previous games and retired and are living in hawaii now. This duke nukem forever stuff is just for their amusement.
  • RandomTerrain #46 3 years ago

If this game is very successful.... think of all the other games companies that will follow suit, hahaha!
We'll be waiting a long time for future games.
  • Melan #47 3 years ago

the news about DNF is just to keep the shareholders happy. DNF is the new phantom ;) .
  • Pinewood_Groves #48 3 years ago

This Duke Nukem Forever joke is getting old!
  • GitSomE_UK #49 3 years ago

Totally bored with the eeking out of screen shots, then not, then shots, then not. Where's the game play eh? Maybe a proper trailer that shows something? He must have a build or something to demo?

Enjoyed DN3D when it was here and 3DR would have made squillions had he followed up with a sequel within a few years.

I remember when George was banging on about it'll blow your minds, it'll be the best evah etc. etc. etc. Fuck you joe public I'm the don and you will wait as long as I want etc. etc.

So much has changed in the industry over the years I reckon this will go the way of Daikatana and Duke Nukem will certainly be forever in our minds but for all the wrong reasons.

  • kangarootoo #50 3 years ago

"If I had to make a game it would probably take 10 years as I'm a lazy feck."

Hmmm, is that supposed to suggest it will actually be good when it comes out? Because it would take you 10 years to make a game?

The connection is lost on me.
  • TonyB #51 3 years ago

    "DNF is the new phantom"

The Phantom was announced in 2002, a full five years after this was first announced. DNF is the original Phantom.
