DSi to launch in Europe next spring

That's the plan, says Nintendo.

Nintendo has said it is "aiming" to launch the new DSi handheld in Europe next year.

As announced earlier today, the DSi - which features bigger screens and a built-in camera - will be released in Japan on November 1st.

"We are aiming to launch DSi in Europe in Spring 2009," a spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"As it's too early to confirm specifics on the European or UK launch, we will not be offering further comment at this time," he added.

The representative did not give any indication of a European price point for the DSi. In Japan, the handheld will cost JPY 18,900 (GBP 100 / EUR 130).

Other than the camera and the bigger screens, what else about it is new? Doesn't seem to be any real reason to upgrade if you already have a DS Lite.

Is there ever going to be another Gameboy or has the DS subtly replaced it?

It's a good upgrade if you only have a DS or GBA though. I agree upgrading from a DS Lite is pointless unless you're the sort who loves taking crap quality photos and don't have a camera on your phone.

Surely this is really bad for their sales this Christmas

Who wants a DS this year when there is something better out next year.

Also, why the long wait again.

    I doubt it, Gameboy is a bit, y'know, 80s.

Also the problem with the gameboy is its name: Nintendo sell to everyone now, not just boys.

What a meh update. Nothing worth selling my current DS for (if I ever turned it on recently anyway).

dsiware sounds pretty cool, would be awesome if being able to run games off the sd card directly means some portable VC games in the future.

I've just looked at the official battery life from Nintendo. I certainly won't be getting it now - the battery goes a good few hours sooner!

So a camera that can't even compete with phone cameras from 2 years ago, a MP3 player and the promise of a few VC games. And how is this supposed to stop people sticking their fingers up at Nintendo by getting an R4 card?

The back buttons on my Phat are wearing out, so this is good news for me.

So is this a remodel of the DS, or is it a brand new DS? I read a long time ago that older DS games wouldn't work on a new DS if it has bigger screens cos of calibration problems or something. Anyone know anything?

Think there are 2 cameras on it, so i'd guess there will be some form of updated pictchat/photochat - if that's the case you can already image the headlines that might provoke about kids being targetted by pervs

An issue for early western adopters is whether the jap DSI's will restrict you to a japanese online DS shop - not a major issue if you can understand kanji, but likely to be a stumbling block for most western users; also likely that you will have to have a japanese based credit card address too...(if its anything like the Wii - as a owner of a US Wii I am restricted to the US Wii shop)
