DSi breaks half-a-million in a month News

DS News by Robert Purchese

2 December, 2008

The Japanese have lapped up more than 500,000 DSi units during the launch month of November.

The exact figure is 535,379, according to Famitsu (read by Kotaku).

Media Create numbers (via NeoGAF) put that near to the lifetime Japanese sales of Xbox 360, which stand at 771,409.

Launched in Japan on 1st November, the DSi introduced an integrated camera, bigger screens and an SD memory card slot to store downloadable DSiWare games.

This meant the removal of GBA backwards compatibility, a slot which is also essential for the Guitar Hero: On Tour grip peripheral.

We won't get the DSi here until spring 2009, and we suggest holding off importing until then.

To find out why, check our hands-on impressions of the Nintendo DSi.

I've never understood the concept of buying a new version of hardware you already own. But the Japanese seem to go mad for this sort of shit.

Perhaps the people buying it don't already own it?

Perhaps, but I would wager that at least a third of those getting it already have a previous version of the DS. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so presumtuous, but I was going on the assumption that pretty much everyone in Japan who does gaming already has one.

Population of Japan according to google is 127.5 million and the DS has sold only 25 million so far. Still plenty of non-DS owning folk left to buy one.

Won't be getting one. The only interesting thing is that the screen is bigger but not too much of an improvement over my dsl. I might have been more interested if they drastically increased the screen size. Imo, that psp2 that surfaced a week or so ago is far more interesting.

Hmm the only game I can think of that would benefit from bigger screens is TWEWY - but I wouldn't get one just cos of that tho!

Well I want a DS and there's no way I'm getting an old stock Lite when this is coming next year.

Until some compelling DSi software appears, I'll be sticking with my Lite, because I do still use my GBA slot. I recognise it's redundancy as far as Nintendo is concerned, however.

And c'mon, we all know a large chunk of these sales will be the 'core' gamer, repuchasing a DS for the 3rd time. It's not like people waited until the DSi appeared before deciding to buy.

DSi may lack the wow factor of DS to DS Lite but it definitely has improved features.

It's just the little things like raised shoulder buttons, improved clicky d-pad and face buttons (rather than the mushy ones on Lite), digital volume buttons, ability to adjust screen brightness by holding down select and pressing volume plus and minus buttons and having the power button on the inside thereby eliminating the risk of accidentally switching it off when on standby.

Then there's DSi Ware and the possiblities of that are huge.

Having missed the DSLite, this could well be up my alley. As others have said, it depends if the DSiWare is of any gimmicky use, doubly so the new browser implementation.

I hate Nintendo. Or perhaps I hate myself. Either way I'm picking up one of these just like I picked up a DS and DS Lite. I can't help myself.

Surely buying a new iteration of the DS with slightly expanded functionality is akin to buying a new version of the Ipod with slightly expanded functionality. Nintendo are essentially following Apple's model of business with the DS, releasing slightly enhanced versions every couple of years and watching them fly off the shelves.

@Mo

Have to agree with the buttons issue; I still think the clicky d-pad and solid buttons on the original DS are far better than the Lite's. The buttons on the latter feel cheap and the d-pad moves around a bit. I've always thought that original slab was better constructed endurance-wise.

Has anyone got R4 cards (etc) to work with it yet?
