DS breaks UK hardware record

Wii quite popular and all.

All the predictions of a bumper Christmas for Nintendo in the UK seem to be proving accurate, with news that its consoles are selling in record numbers, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

The DS has now broken the previous UK weekly hardware sales figure twice this month, shifting 185,000 in the first week and over 200,000 last week.

Meanwhile the Wii also sold over 100,000 units last week, demonstrating a decent supply of stock even if there's still not enough to satisfy demand.

Additionally the Wii is thought to have surpassed the Xbox 360's installed base in the UK this month.

GamesIndustry.biz is watching a crap C5 version of Location, Location.

    Something like a phenomenon.

Surely if this doesn't put a stop to the looney conspiracy theorists claiming that Nintendo are deliberately contricting supply to boost demand, nothing will.

And Wii installed user base > the 360's in about half the time? I really wish I'd put some money on that back when the Cube was in its final death throes... Astonishing.

If only there were more than 3 games for it that weren't novelty rubbish or ports with broken control systems, eh?

Or if they'd actually produced enough copies of the one new game that's worth having for it this Christmas.

Seriously, how come you can't find mario galaxy for love nor money if it never even sold enough to get to the top of the charts?

So the Wii is this years best selling toy, beating My Little Pony and Barbie and Ken by a big margin, excellent.

I wonder how games console sales went this year?

    ...only joking...

'Surely if this doesn't put a stop to the looney conspiracy theorists claiming that Nintendo are deliberately contricting supply to boost demand, nothing will. '

Wouldn't be the first time, they did the same back in the late 80s when they had complete control over the world with the NES. It's documented in detail in the 'Game Over' book.

mentalist, where have you been looking? I can find it basically anywhere...

Other two being twilight princess and Metroid Prime 3?

I have a strange urge to play wii sports again, must be christmas...

This, I agree, is a serious problem.

Yeah, we all expect hardware shortages at this time of year, but surely Nintendo should be able to press enough copies of key titles to keep the existing user base happy. Both Super Mario Galaxy and Lego Star Wars have been pretty tricky to track down since their release, with a lot of shops and online retailers selling out. (I notice Amazon.co.uk are currently out of stock of both titles, for instance).

You can't get a Wii Zapper anywhere, either.

"You can't get a Wii Zapper anywhere, either."
You don't want the Zapper, it's crap. Heavy and hard to use. Link's Crossbow training is ace though.
  • Lagto_Soa #10 4 years ago

Blockbuster is the only place I've seen Zappers in stock, if that's any help.
  • klixman #11 4 years ago

I knew this News article would come. Even the old crusties at work are talking about how great those sports games are.
  • peterfll #12 4 years ago

Saw some Zappers in Game at the weekend (Canary Wharf).

Also, the oldies can't get enought of those DS's. I blame Patrick Stuart (and Julie Walters).

I'm really pleased they're doing well. If they can keeping making titles the quality of Super Mario Galaxy, the second Nintendo golden age will be upon us!

The dark age of Sony is beyond us! Rejoice the return of the N!!!

All gamers, rejoice! One corporation sells more stuff then the other corporation and even more then the third corporation that is the most evil of them all :p

That's the story basically, right? :p

100,000 units sold last week: I think they could produce more though as it was easier to get hold of one after New Year and in summer so they must have known that demand over X-mas was going to increase.

Anyone in Derby area - get there quick if you want one without the mark-up.

My mate bought PS3 yesterday and not any of the other consoles.

Bought a DS for my missus for her Birthday at the weekend, first console she has ever owned and partly go it so I could have mine back once in a while (had to get my Stepdad to buy it from Duty Free at Heathrow where he works, as they are sold out everywhere!).
Apparently they regularly have Wii's in stock there, I guess that it is not on someone's mind when they are grabbing a flight to the States (and cheaper as no tax on them!).]
My mum also want's a DS, so that will officially be the first console one of my parents have bought since my Dad got a 2600 from Silica in Orpington back in the late 70's!

"I really wish I'd put some money on that back when the Cube was in its final death throes... Astonishing."

But is it that suprising? Even though the cube "bombed" it still sold pretty much the same numbers worldwide as the xbox did.

Oh dear, the good old days
    Street Fighter 2 = £100
    :(
  • gazmando #29 4 years ago

I really wish people would buy all 3 consoles instead of buying lots of mediocre games.
Then maybe they wouldn't get so childish and defensive when one console outsells theirs.
  • secombe #30 4 years ago

Yep, spending about a grand on hardware makes a lot of sense :)
