DS and PSP still on top in Japan

Handheld sales highest in quiet week.

The Nintendo DS and PSP continue to shift more hardware than the big boy consoles in Japan, despite a lack of new releases in the week ending 11th April.

Despite a 13 per cent drop in sales, New Super Mario Bros. Wii came out on top in the software charts based on Media Create figures (thanks to NeoGAF for translating), ahead of Koei's Fist of the North Star title for PS3. There were no new releases in the top 10.

PSP and PSPgo sales were 31,592 combined, just short of the DS family's 36,459. PS3 was the best-selling home console, shifting 28,973 units compared to the Wii's 25,345 and the Xbox 360's paltry 3218.

The PS2 sold 1425. GET IN.

    Can you really combines PSP and PSPGo sales when PSPGo doesn't play PSP's games? Just wondering..
  • Widge #2 2 years ago

    So what does it play? N64 games?
  • doulema #3 2 years ago

    Do I have to spell it out for you that I mean that is doesn't take the same storage media and is based on Minis? I said I was wondering something. Didn't think it was so difficult for someone to give an actual answer. Being a smartass is trendy I guess so you had to create a reason to be one. Thumbs up.

    The Go number should be separate just so we can laugh at how little that POS sells.

    @doulema

    Well, I guess it depends. Actually according to the article and statistics, you can for those making them ^^
    Widge probably woke up on the wrong side of the bed. No worries.

    It's not based on minis. Not at all. What an odd thing to think.

    It does use the same media, regular psps can run games from the store too. All releases get a digital release too now so yes it can be combined.

    It plays PSP games you buy from the store, that is not being a smartass, that is just factual.

    It's nice to see the PS3 still going strong a month after FFXIII. It's safe to say the lower pricepoint was really holding it back in Japan.

    @ KDR_11k

    The PSPgo is unpopular, true. However, this is because of it's so-called "premium"retail price and low market visibility, not the system itself, which is actually very good.

    If you've not tried one then you really shouldn't make absurd judgments about it. Calling it a "POS" just makes you sound like a troll.

    @doulema

    If you can't count PSP with PSP Go then you can't count DS with DSi, after all the DS can't play DSi games.

    Didn't think the PSP would sell that much. Got an early PSP myself (1000 series I think) and used for a while. Loved Wipeout on it and Syphon Filter but then lost interest in it. Too big to use as a music player, screen to shiney for films while on the bus and Wipeout too hard to play when said bus driver is driving like a maniac.

    Now my PSP sits in a box in the attic with my C64, megadrive, game gear and PS1.

    With the popularity of smart phones the PSP just seems pointless to me. Obviously 30,000 Jap's disagree of course.

    Sony could justify PSP2 purely on the basis that its a platform to sell Monster Hunter on in Japan.

    That's been the killer franchise, something the PSP's never had in the west.
  • trubadman #16 2 years ago

    The first 2 GTA's were killer games, but maybe they didn't have a great effect on sales as they were released early on in the life cycle of the PSP
